+KawaiiVictini1 I thought that too when I saw the giant worm. Lol. Kinda a shame this ova series isn't very good, was kinda hoping it'd be the Panty and Stocking or Senran Kagura of 90's anime. Oh well, guess I'll just rewatch Panty and Stocking
I'm still baffled Steve Blum can do a voice like that slug pizza thing. I remember being stunned finding out he voiced Guilmon. Kudos for that skill though that's amazing!
Soooooo fun fact here: The actress who plays Mew Fumizuki (the short blue hair girl) is played by Patricia Ja Lee a.k.a Melodee Lee, who is also Cassie Chan of the Power Ranger series. She played the Pink Turbo and Pink Space Ranger. She's also the current Jill Valentine.
***** ... you seem to go under the assumption that every single person is male and heterosexual. So... congratulations on both being a sexist AND a homophobe.
The Hyper Doll's anime is very different from the manga. In the manga they're a lot more motivated to save the world, while in the anime they won't do anything unless ordered to. The intro in the anime is a very condensed version of volume 1 of the manga. In the manga they make references to Parasite, Guyver, and Dragonball Z. I think they were just parodying everything. I would summarise the plot but the last 2 volumes were never translated into English, so I don't know why any of it was happening.
@@uanime1 From what I've seen and heard so far, it looks and sounds like yet another case of the anime adaptation of a manga being a cash-in hatchet job that doesn't live up to the source material and tries to paper it over with extra skin of females and males alike, along with making Mew bluer so she looks like Sailor Mercury to trick people into buying it and ride the pigtails of the Sailor Moon phenomenon along with so many copycats of the time.
@@autobotstarscream765 That seems likely as it seems that they made this anime before the 5 volume manga was complete. Also it omits most of the plot from the manga.
"Lovely Angels"? You don't know? Sage! Sage! Review Dirty Pair! This is Sage material if I've ever seen it and I always thought it was just buried in some archive.
sadly the DVD left out the live action skits that were on the VHS tape release of the OVA. They did (sorta) tie into the anime episodes, and were TRULY painful to watch.
"Lovey Angels" I knew there had to be a Dirty Pair reference in there somewhere with those two... I was getting a serious Kei and Yuri vibe with those two sniping at each other.
I missed a huge part of the 90s era, anime wise, because only a handful of them came to my country.. Even good series from the time like Rurouni Kenshin and Slayers, I saw on TV much later (almost mid 2000s), while at the local DVD rental stores I only found bottom of the barrel echhi/hentai movies/ovas. The weird thing is that in the 80s we had a ton of anime rushing in the rental stores, stuff that in the US never heard of until much much later. Macross, Voltron, Getter Robo, Akira, Mazinger, Plawres Sanshiro, Kabamaru, are just a few that I remember from back then, and I saw tens of others that I barely remember from the era. But from the 90s? Basically only Dragonball and Dragonball Z and a couple others like Crayon Shin-chan. Not sure why they stopped importing anime during that decade.
9:24 That reporter is voiced by David Hayter because even if he was doing Metal Gear Solid and writing the screenplay for X-men (2000), he was doing anime for the ADR studio, Animaze inc who did dubs for Cowboy Bebop and Trigun. But for Hayter, he did Lupin in Castle of Cagolistro and Bernard Wiseman in Gundam: War in the Pocket for the company and still having great respects for those roles (especially Lupin).
Probably not. Don't see a whole lot of similarities, I'd like to think that it was a random comedic bit, but it could very well be a reference to some other famous duo that I've not heard of.
I immediately thought that too when I first heard it. I thought Sage was about to speak about Dirty Pair when he was saying he was desperate for a reference lest it just be madness...
You should really consider reviewing "Moldiver", it's a 6 episode OVA with a unique blend between the superhero genre and the magical genre. And did I mention Steve Blum is in it to?
You know, if there is one old-timey, nostalgic anime I would love to see Sage tackle, if there is one masterpiece that I feel could truly make him stare at at just what he is watching (though not as much as the likes of Mad Bull 34; that's a tough contender), it is this: *SAMURAI PIZZA CATS!!!*
Finally getting back to Bubblegum Crisis next episode, huh? I'd have hoped we'd hop right into Crash! since I just watched it not all that long ago, and I'm particularly eager to hear Sage's opinion on it. But, AD Police Files came out first, so I guess we're doing that instead.
This is Japanese Invader Zim: Uncaring aliens wrecking earth, idiot townspeople oblivious to obvious danger, and the one guy who has brains is treated as the butt of every joke. The only difference is IZ is funny and has real talent while this doesn't.
Not sure if you knew about it, Sage, but I can't believe you forgot to mention the earthworm's Tony Pope, a.k.a. Goofy. But the Mr. Ed joke made up for it.
For about eleven years, Tony Pope did Goofy (he was probably an understudy of Bill Farmer's, but he could do the voice pretty well). In Disneyland, several rides do use his voice. But a better example of Tony Pope would be Jumpstart, actually. He was Mr. Hopsalot and Frankie if you played those games, but it was more-or-less Goofy's voice that he used for the earthworm.
There's actually a manga this anime is based on. It's out of print, but it's actually pretty good, albeit nothing too special. It has a backstory for the villain, and the Dolls have more character than in the OVA where here they're pretty much the same character. The anime here, feels like it's just another "at home" anime rather than an adaptation of the manga (the opening just breezes by actual monsters/villains in the manga as a "READ THE MANGA" advertisement), in this case, the kid wants both Dirty Pair, hence the reference at 7:59 and Sailor Moon (the latter being because Mew here looks like Ami Mizuno/Sailor Mercury with shorter hair, even though her hair was *green* in the manga), but Dirty Pair and Sailor Moon are already at home.
I had a mini-heart attack @ 15:30 because I thought that that was the dvd cover of Hyper Police, an anime so comedically exploitable I have made countless MST3k-like references to it when I riff anime.

I think the slug boss's second appearance is from an okonomiyaki, which I am told is like a pizza pancake.
The main character sounds like a geekier version of Dib. I can already see his classmates saying that his head's too big for his body.
