I knew that I recognized that voice from somewhere. Ted Lewis did the voice of Escargoon in Kirby Right Back at Ya. And...HOLY CRAP!! He was Giovanni in Pokemon. And Tracey!? Now I like this guy even more.
My favorite thing about Grandoll was indeed Ted Lewis as Peos with his Paul Lynde impression--which he would later use for Escargoon on "Kirby: Right Back At Ya!". It was even funnier when he cussed and I'm now tempted to edit clips of Kirby with audio from Grandoll for the laughs. Then the character died in episode two with an "Oh SHIT!" and my laughs died with him. Also, Haruna sounds familiar, it bothered me throughout the entire OVA because I was trying to pin a face (well, character) on her…
+Kumori Garasu Haruna is apparently played by "Deborah Zane" (credited as "Debra Zane" in GranDoll), who also played Cocktail in Knights of Ramune. She has this Sue Ulu-ish voice to her in the latter role. Can't immediately spring for who she is, though. When I think of older sounding CPM female VAs I think of Shannon Conley, Suzanne Savoy, Carol Jacobanis and Caryl Marder. It's not Savoy, as she's Suzy Prue. I wanna say it's Shannon Conley, as she's the most prolific of this set, but then again we have cases like "Emma Rayda" (Uranus in Battle Arena Toshinden) that aren't apparently her and seem to slip through the cracks.
+Dec Hardcat Ted Lewis was the very first English voice of James, only playing him from episodes 2-8, when James was more posh and refined than hammy and horse whiny. Eric Stuart became the major 4Kids dub voice of James starting with "The School of Hard Knocks." Lewis has a wide range of roles in many shows. In YuGiOh he's Bakura, Alistair, Croquet, Chumley, and Jack Atlas. In Kirby he also played opposite himself in the role of King Dedede. Sonic X? The President, Nelson Thorndyke and Yellow Zelkova. His accents are well defined and his speech pattern has that clarity that puts the right emphasis in the right places. The guy's a beast at what he does, what can I say?
The only time I've seen that whole sleeping bag principle (which is what I'm calling it now) actually be avoided was in One Piece. Some flying enemies were attacking the ship, and some guy shouted to group back up for another pass, and Franky thought they were calling to him. He said Sentai (translating to something like formation or team) which sounds similar to Hentai (perverted, or in this case, the noun, pervert), which Franky identifies himself as. I remember watching the sub and thinking "theres a joke thats gonna get lost in translation". When the dub (my preferred viewing experience) finally caught up to it, I was surprised. They actually put forth the effort on such a stupid joke, translating the command to "revert for flyby", and Franky thought they said "pervert fly-guy", referring to him. This is the only time i've seen a pun translation not come out as something completely off the wall.
I am not a native English-speaker and this anime gives me the impression that all people who are must have damaged eardrums from all the high-pitched squeaking females do all the time..
hey bennet been a big fan for a while now, and im really glad i found that you have a youtube channel so i can stop going to that guy with the glasses or chaneel whatever, anyway man love the work keep it up
Who else only clicked on the video because the thumbnail looks like Sage holding a chunk of Kryptonite over Supergirl and wanted to find out what the heck it meant?
Oh God.. That Ninja Ressurection anime ruined my freaking childhood. Ninja Scroll was the literally the *FIRST* anime I watched and that poor excuse of a sequel they made really crumpled by jimmies. I can't wait for sage to tear that lying pile a new one.
Actually, that was never a sequel. It was just another half assed ova that a dubbing company slapped "Ninja" on the title hoping dumb fans would buy it.
557deadpool No, he was just disapointed because there were tits in Ninja Scroll but not in Ninja Ressurection. In his child mind, if the first one has partial nudity, the second should have a full XXX sex scene. He probably didn't know about the internet.
Akalistos I was disappointed because at the time I thought was purchasing a sequel to one of favorite anime. What I got was a completely different movie just marketed as Ninja Scroll's sequel. PS: There was full on *Nudity* and *Sex* in Ninja Resurrection...it made the movie worse for me. Just let Sage explain it next week.
i think the sleeping bag thing would have worked better if they literally said "in your country" it kinda works on curiosity and people would look it up
Thankyou sage! I've been waiting for you to rip into Ninja Ressurection for a while and now my wish will come true. Please tear it several new ass holes. PLEASE!!
I just got this on VHS. It’s a screening copy. You hit on all the points of this OVA. It’s bad and I was liking the bath scene than that weird toy shows up and the mom is listening in and the dad is watching too. Creepy yeah.
3:29 as of now, there are actually some really good MLP:FiM songs you could sing in public and, unless they'd heard the song on the show or learned about it being from the show by some means, they'd have no clue where it's from and your dignity would still be intact

As far as I can remember, the only CPM titles I enjoyed (looking back on them now) were Record of Lodoss Wars, Tank Police, Project A-Ko, Urusei Yatsura Movie 2: Beautiful Dreamer, and Ayane's High Kick Also, I'm assuming you were cutting off a Yugioh Abridged quote at 9:07.
YES! I was wondering when he'd review Ninja Resurrection... I remember getting both that and Ninja Scroll, saw Ninja Scroll first and absolutely loved it, then saw Ninja Resurrection and wanted to hang myself for even buying it...
I gather that in Japanese, the word for Universe and World are the same. There was another Anime Abandon episode where the anime characters kept saying the World was going to end when they clearly meant Universe.
Is it sad that I recognized him not only as Tracy from Pokemon, but also as a background character in His and Her Circumstances? Seriously, though, those two shows traded voice actors like...well, Pokemon. They weren't even licensed by the same company.
ZanraiKid Yeah - not to mention he's one of the only voices from the Pokémon anime to actually reprise one of his roles after the VA swap (Giovanni from the start till Advanced Battle, then again from Battle Dimension onwards) Given the only animes I've seen with him in were 4Kids made (Finding anime in the UK was hard until midway through the 00's XD), Hey, It's That Voice! pops up quite easily for guys like him.
Zachary Erickson That's where I recognised the Paul Lynde voice from to begin with XD I know he also used that voice for a villain of the day character in Yu-Gi-Oh GX
***** Yeeea, gonna have to disagree. I mean Naruto part 1 was pretty good, but part 2 is just like what you complained about in the american cartoons with the sad backstory, but WORST. Have a friend that's turned into an evil douche? No problem! Just keep hounding him until he turns back to normal no matter what evil he commits and the times he tries to kill you, because YOU'RE MY FRIIIIEEENNND (eventhough you don't act like it in the least).
How to save the sleeping bag pun: she took the phrase "time to lay this to rest" literally. Give me a job at Funimation.
Sai it works
After what they did to Vic Mignogna, you wouldn't want a job there.
HA
Whoever you are, you'd probably be an improvement at this point if you can survive an apparently toxic work environment.
I knew that I recognized that voice from somewhere. Ted Lewis did the voice of Escargoon in Kirby Right Back at Ya. And...HOLY CRAP!! He was Giovanni in Pokemon. And Tracey!? Now I like this guy even more.
Invader Zim was probably one of the best examples of alien/spy/whatever infiltrating a school.
Not really but it was definitely funny
Not gonna lie Sage - your Paul Lynde impression is great.

+Vox Nihili You sure do know a lot about the CPM voices. Care for a chat sometime?
I'd watch those clips
Ya not the only one lol
@@ottagol1985New York voice actors are the best
9:08 The irony is LittleKuriboh could do a better job dubbing the anime, all by himself.
Abridged series ftw. 😎👍
He works for Crunchyroll now he was a member of the Black tri stars in the Cosmic Era HD redub
So he was in Yugioh as Bakura and Bandit Keith....... in America :D
He's not American.....he's Canadian!!! Lol.
judeskater93 Oh yeah I forgot about that XD
And he also played CARD GAEMS ON MOTORCYCLES!!!!
And the Master of Faster, the Sultan of Speed; JACK ATLAS!
"Does anyone give a shit in New York." Fuck no they don't. 4Kids was from New York.
YA-YO YA-YOOOOO!
Derek Rife DREAMIN
***** DREAMIN
***** DREAMIN
Don't give it up nami
Gotta love that LittleKuriboh cameo
God that Nathan guy is so ridiculously hammy. It's so glorious
My Gaydar is going off, Bakura must be near!
Jordan Bonn He's not gay, he's just British.
Hahahahahahaha I Just Heard Escargoon Say God Dammit! Life, Is, COMPLETE!
no wonder he sounded familiar lol
Holy crap, you're right. I might just look for this thing myself now.
DW4Ever91 we gotta get that goddamn kirby!
OK, how in the hell could Sage make a trilby joke and NOT get called out by Linkara?
Because Linkara wears an actual fedora, not a trillby.
Goddamnit, let Kuriboh act like Jack Atlas!!
8:57 More importantly, Tracey Sketchit, Giovanni, James from Team Rocket, and Escargoon had the same voice actor?
+Dec Hardcat Ted Lewis was the very first English voice of James, only playing him from episodes 2-8, when James was more posh and refined than hammy and horse whiny. Eric Stuart became the major 4Kids dub voice of James starting with "The School of Hard Knocks."

Vox Nihili Yeah!! :D
Ah this review is too funny XD always a good pick me up! Your impression of Nathan is spot on amusing!
Oh my god, the acting in this anime....And I thought Tommy Wiseau's performance was the pinnacle of hilarity.
The only time I've seen that whole sleeping bag principle (which is what I'm calling it now) actually be avoided was in One Piece. Some flying enemies were attacking the ship, and some guy shouted to group back up for another pass, and Franky thought they were calling to him. Azumanga's english dub managed to get some passable translations for a segment involving puns.
At first I thought Thin Sage looked strange. Now that I'm used to it, Fat Sage looks strange.
Oh my god! That Lewis guy was the announcer in Pokemon Stadium? I LOVE THAT GUY!
He also voiced Tracy
I am not a native English-speaker and this anime gives me the impression that all people who are must have damaged eardrums from all the high-pitched squeaking females do all the time..
go watch the subbed versions, suddenly the english high pitched voices aren't so bad.
ShadowWolfRising
They tend to be better voiced than abominations like these.
Lancelot
yes because high pitched voices in a language you don't understand are SO much better. /sarcasm.
Thomas Jenkins
You can get away with much more if you don't understand something, look at MGS.
Lancelot
i understood MGS
Ah that lovely dub. You could listen to it every moment of the day
Seriously that dub happened? Wow!
omg I love super cheesey over the top Magical girl anime and wow Ted Lewis...Each time I hear him speaking all I see is Escargoon
For the record, Captain Taylor was dubbed fairly well by CPM and Slayers wasn't too badly handled by them. IMO. I think Project A-Ko was too.
4:35 Why do these guys sound like the guys who dubbed Samrai Pizza Cats? I mean seriously, they what they literally sound like to me.
+MrZee agreed, it was broken for me as soon as I heard that transvestite fox's voice.
hey bennet been a big fan for a while now, and im really glad i found that you have a youtube channel so i can stop going to that guy with the glasses or chaneel whatever, anyway man love the work keep it up
M.D.Geist is one of my absolute favorites to this day.
I've admittedly walked into a bathroom and exclaimed my desperate need to pee.
Who else only clicked on the video because the thumbnail looks like Sage holding a chunk of Kryptonite over Supergirl and wanted to find out what the heck it meant?
Still waiting for a Slayers movie review.
...One day.
Should I be worried that I have seen every anime Sage has reviewed so far?
Only be worried if you *ONLY* watched the anime he reviewed. ^_^
I can't help but see the title as hyper speed gran doll... Which sounds like a creepy sex doll for strangest of collectors with nan fetishises.
I actually liked this anime, but as a guilty pleasure, of course
oh man, I think I remember seeing this on the shelf whenever I go to Blockbuster. Oh those were the days.
Oh that's even worse...
They F#$%% used me!
God I feel like someone who just ruffied in night club and now regretting every life decision they made.
Your childhood was not fucking ruined
557deadpool
No, he was just disapointed because there were tits in Ninja Scroll but not in Ninja Ressurection. In his child mind, if the first one has partial nudity, the second should have a full XXX sex scene. He probably didn't know about the internet.
Akalistos

What I got was a completely different movie just marketed as Ninja Scroll's sequel.
PS: There was full on *Nudity* and *Sex* in Ninja Resurrection...it made the movie worse for me. Just let Sage explain it next week.
At 9:05
Was the joke about Bakura Ryou or Isato Kaiza or Koichi?
Becauase he also did the voice of Giovanni and there wasn't a peep about that.
i think the sleeping bag thing would have worked better if they literally said "in your country" it kinda works on curiosity and people would look it up
Ted Lewis is a hero! Don't you diss him.
Ted Lewis is the voice of Esargoon on Kirby: Right back at ya!
Some of the voice actors for the female characters sound like guys doing a terrible impression of a woman.
***** "I am a FLAMING MOLTRES!"
Funny thing is most male characters in animation are voiced by females
So what have we learned? That it doesn't go both ways.
wasn't Waifu voiced by an actress that did sailor moon at some point.
Slixer Her VA is Debbie Rabbai, aka Debora Rabbai, aka Angora Deb. She is one of CPM's more versatile female VAs along with Sharon Becker.
14:42 Why is it I can totally picture Paradox from the Abridged YGO movie in that role now?
Cause there are a few voice roles in Grandoll that made it into Yugioh Bonds Beyond Time.
Thankyou sage! I've been waiting for you to rip into Ninja Ressurection for a while and now my wish will come true. Please tear it several new ass holes. PLEASE!!
When Sage said Ninja Month, I knew what was coming and I was right. I've been waiting for Ninja Resurrection for a while now. :D
Suave must have loved the end of Usagi-drop then, hahaha.
That guy sounds like Escargoon from the Kirby cartoon. Is it the same voice actor?
Yeah! It is!
+Von Ithipathachai holy crap! I knew it!
Von Ithipathachai Yup, and I have all episodes downloaded of this anime
damn he had a bad beginning too? SHIT MAN!
god that line reading by the ultimate bad guy was comedy gold.
Also go ninja go ninja go
"Throwing down the sleeping bag" should be a catchphrase by now.
7:45 Apparently, henshin sequences turn your body into a wet noodle.
Depending on who you ask, the modern anime scene was either heralded by or erupted despite CPM.
It is bad when the short segments of the anime shown make me want to close the window.
at 9:05 what movie title was Sage focusing on?... just curious.
What animes are used in the intro? Interested at the boxing one and that exploding dude (lol)
I just got this on VHS. It’s a screening copy. You hit on all the points of this OVA. It’s bad and I was liking the bath scene than that weird toy shows up and the mom is listening in and the dad is watching too. Creepy yeah.
is it bad I kinda like
how the armor looks
That NGE reference made me spit water all over my monitor.
I'm suing you for damages over that, btw
Whenever that guy speaks it reminds me of samurai pizza cats.
Cute pfp, who's the character and artist? 🙂
Most people can only wonder what Central Park Media was on when making this.
+Kelly Chuang Or with any series they dubbed.
+Kelly Chuang they don't "make" anything. They localize garbage thats cheap as shit. Dub it with cheap actors and then sell the dvds.
They did the Slayers english dub, which was considered one of the best dubs at that time.
I'm somehow getting mainly a lot of flashbacks to Shinesman watching this.
8:54 Screw all the rest of that crap! He was the Pokemon Stadium Announcer!!
"GOOOOOONE!!! IT'S A ONE HIT WONDER!!!"
I remember that game! Awesome!
Greg DeAndrea
I don't believed. I remember Pokemon Stadium.
9:07 IN AMERICA!
CARD GAMES ON MOTORCYCLES !
SCREW YOU GUYS I'M GOING TO NAMEK!
Did't that guy do a voice over in samurai pizza cats? And that snail in Kirby right back at you
i wish i knew he was going to show that...so he is the snail but i still stick by he voiced in samurai pizza cats
Ok is anyone else having the video screen not show any image but just play Bennett's voice? Because that is happening with me
The bad guy sounds across between the Hooded Claw and Brent Spiner.
3:29 as of now, there are actually some really good MLP:FiM songs you could sing in public and, unless they'd heard the song on the show or learned about it being from the show by some means, they'd have no clue where it's from and your dignity would still be intact
5:08 Is that the voice actor for Escargoon??
Yep, which I and many others find even more amusing than Sage's pick from his resumé of pointing out the actor also voiced Jack Atlus.
What as that thing that played during the CHosen one Bit?
James? Jack? RYOU!? I fucking love Nathan's voice action and I didn't even know it. XD
Will you ever do a review of Cyber City Odeo 808?
Did the character designer of divergence eve also worked in this ova?
Sorry, I'm not familiar with Little Kuriboh's work and the closeup didn't make it clear, which character at 9:00 was Sage dreading?
Isn't the dad's voice actor the scientist incest villain from Agent Aika?
3:23 Better an MLP song than any of the current crap that's called "music" now and dear god you wish I was being sarcastic.
DarkSoul712 Exactly.
You must be listening to the radio instead of actually looking for music.
+The Real God Agreed. I like MLP songs though
The Real God I mostly listen to classic rock.
XD
At least you have some nice words for Ted Lewis. But still, where's the proof of John O'Donnell being an egomaniac? From my experiences with the guy at cons, he seems like a nice guy.
John O’Donnell is better than Al Kahn
I remember watching the dubbed VHS copy of this years and years ago and liking it b/c it was so badly dubbed. I've yet to watch the subbed version, even though my sis has a copy; I just don't know if I can deal with the high-pitched female voices I'm already dreading b/c Japan has a hard on for using voice actresses with high-pitched voices.
the dude also played Escargoon from the Kirby anime
Huh, I thought that snail was voiced by Paul Lynde.
3:20 Heck, that's way below Dodger Leigh wearing an oversized hoodie.
Ya know, I just realized something. Bennet absolutely, positively, completely despises truck nuts.
Oh Sage how we miss the embodiment of what you were. an otaku in his mother's basement suffering from junk food and folliculitis but tons of fun as long as you weren't in the same room with him!
As far as I can remember, the only CPM titles I enjoyed (looking back on them now) were Record of Lodoss Wars, Tank Police, Project A-Ko, Urusei Yatsura Movie 2: Beautiful Dreamer, and Ayane's High Kick
Also, I'm assuming you were cutting off a Yugioh Abridged quote at 9:07.
Sage, let's face it; without bad companies like CPM, guys like you and me would be out of a job.
Oh god... why do I like the art style in this show?!
It's so 90s I love it.
That guy keeps sounding like Escargoon without the banter.
Among the other titles in Central Park Media's existence.
YES! I was wondering when he'd review Ninja Resurrection... I remember getting both that and Ninja Scroll, saw Ninja Scroll first and absolutely loved it, then saw Ninja Resurrection and wanted to hang myself for even buying it...
They pulled that scam TWICE, the other "Ninja Resurrection" was "Ninja Scroll Resurrection" which was actually Sword for Truth.
is the guy who plays the villain The same guy that did escargo in the Kirby Anime?
Spencer Collins
Who?
Was he gonna say Cagali (from Gundam Seed)?
Whoooooooooo! Somebody remembers Bewitched! And he does sound a little like Uncle Arthur.
lol
lol
I gather that in Japanese, the word for Universe and World are the same. There was another Anime Abandon episode where the anime characters kept saying the World was going to end when they clearly meant Universe.
I enjoyed Wind Named Amnesia and Voltage Fighter....when I was 13 XD
I wonder when Bennet will review the Guyver anime?
Another great video kept up the good work
That voice? Is that the snail from Kirby?
OMFG
Yes.
What is a trillby?
Is it sad that I immediately recognised Ted Lewis the second I heard the Paul Lynde voice? XD

Zachary Erickson If they do that, I hope they make it easy to find - I'd love to see that :)
Can't wait for the "Ninja Resurrection"!!
Hmm ninja month… wonder what Sage's cutoff date would say about the orange elephant in the room
Review Naruto! That shit came out in 2002. I wanna here ur take on it prior to jumping the shark
Maybe he will do an OVA or Film. if he is doing more Battle Shonens though I hope he does Trust and Betrayal, it was a masterpiece.
***** Yeeea, gonna have to disagree. I mean Naruto part 1 was pretty good, but part 2 is just like what you complained about in the american cartoons with the sad backstory, but WORST.

I thought ADV was Sage's favorite punching bag
Hey, I like eating at TGI Fridays. They have one of my favorite appetizers.
