BBQ Rub Recipe from Townsend Spice & Supply - townsendspice.com/
Really great bbq starts with the seasonings you put on it. These combinations of spices build flavor on the outside as it cooks. Think of that wonderful bark on a properly smoked pork butt or slab or ribs…that all comes from the rub.
Now there’s plenty of great BBQ Rubs on the market, and all of them start with a basic recipe. It’s safe to bet that almost everyone has the making of a bbq rub in your spice cabinet at home.
I brought in my friends Shane and Lawson Linn from Townsend Spice & Supply - townsendspice.com/ to share with us a basic BBQ Rub recipe that everyone can use as a jumping off point for making good BBQ.
- ½ Cup Paprika
- ½ Cup Salt
- ½ Cup Sugar
- ½ Cup Granulated Garlic
- ¼ Cup Granulated Onion
- ¼ Cup Chili
- ¼ Cup Cumin
- 2 Tablespoons Black Pepper
- 2 Tablespoons Dry Mustard
- 1 Tablespoon Cayenne Pepper
They use 10 common ingredients: Salt, Sugar, Pepper, Garlic, Onion, Chili Powder, Paprika, Cumin, Cayenne, and Mustard to form a BBQ Rub.
This combination of spices is the foundation for producing bbq. You could analyze every rub on the market and just about all of them will contain most if not all of these seasonings. What makes each one different is the ratios or amounts of each ingredient used. With a proper foundation you can create your own rub. Add your favorite seasonings or change up the ratios to your taste and you’ll have your very own signature BBQ Rub.

I respect this... They all sell rubs and are still willing to show how to make your own. My hat's off for that. Thank you for this video.
Agreed.
The man is the definition of legend
there’s something special about making your own😁
Malcom is a legend in my part of the world. Love this dude. His seasonings sell out regularly at my bbq shop.
Never trust a bald barber or a skinny chef.
This man is legendary!
Same recipe scaled down for small quantity:
2 tsp each of paprika, salt, sugar, garlic
1 tsp each of onion, chili, cumin
1/2 tsp each of black pepper, dry mustard
1/4 tsp of cayenne
Ben thank you
Thanks, Ben.
Exactly what I was hoping to find as I scrolled down the comments!..you're the man Ben! Switching it up this year for Christmas, hopefully w/some killer ribs
Glad people found this useful! I just gotta say though, while this recipe is good, do yourself a favor and buy the Killer Hogs BBQ Rub, Im lucky that my local WalMart carries it... tellin yal, its reallllly good
Hero amongst men
Malcolm, I applaud you! Helping out other BBQ people and not just trying to promote your own fantastic products. Kudos Sir!
Whoever thumbed down Sir Malcolm Reed needs to have a good hard look at themselves. This man should be knighted.
Probably a vegan or something..
Totally agree with your comment, and yes Malcolm is the man to go to for bbq.
Amen!
Praise the Lord for your comment, good that you speak up. People who downvote are probably weak vegans who dont leave a well-constructed comment as they support the devil.
@@eric4681702 I could binge watch Malcolm Reed all day. I have learnt alot from his channel. People who thumb down this brilliance annoy me.
I really appreciate Malcom’s blend of teaching and marketing. Have been both a fan and a customer for some time now. I really like his products, but I also value is willingness to teach the DIY approach. Where some choose to only push their products, you are much more transparent. Considering everyone in this video generates income from producing Rubs, yet they were willing to make this video, it speaks volumes to theses guys character.
And lastly a big thumbs up on stepping up the video quality as you have grown. Keep up the good work Big Man.
So much love and respect for you taking the time to share the spotlight with other guys in the industry, and even more respect for you not pushing your products none stop, youre always looking to empower people to make their own recipes and do whats good for them!
I use Killer Hogs BBQ rub, and it’s fantastic. Pretty cool that Malcom has guys on his channel showing you how to make your own. Shows a lot of integrity!
So many people incorrectly think great bbq needs a wet sauce. Great bbq is all about quality meat, a good dry rub, good clean smoke, proper temp and time. Pay attention to those things and you're on your way.
SH72//// I LIKE A GOOD SAUCE,USUALLY ON THE SIDE FOR DIPPING,PUTTING ON LATER AND WHATEVER!!!!! THE ONLY THING I SAUCE ON THE GRILL IS BURGERS,CHICKEN,THINGS LIKE THAT.NEVER LARGE CUTS OF MEAT.ADD THE SAUCE,ON THE SIDE,IN A BOWL.
@@ezrabrooks12 what sauce are you putting on a burger on the grill?!? Genuine curiosity.
Holy CAPS batman....
Thanks Malcolm, another well done video. I have used your videos many times, looking forward to a few sauce recipe ideas in the future.
I live in the area where Townsend's is and I went in there and saw they had your killer hogs BBQ sauce in stock. I grabbed some and Shane told me about how y'all were buds, seeing him on your channel is pretty cool.
Nothing but love to you and also Townsend. Thank you guys for being so honest and helpful. I'm gonna buy some of both of your guys rub just cause the support you all show to amateur bbq enthusiasts. Really makes me happy that there is people like you still out there.
I made this rub for ribs and it's absolutely delicious! So delicious that I've doubled everything and we use it as our go-to rub. I have even taken the advice and made adjustments for a Beef Rub. We have been using this recipe for over a year now.
Thank you sooo much for making this wife/mother look like a Rock Star in the kitchen. 😉
This was a great video... You're hanging out just enjoying each others conversation, talking about things you love to do... Well done. It always amazes me to see someone willing to share what they know, and take the time to post it on a site like RUclips so that others can benefit from it as well... Thank You Sir!!
I've seen comments asking for a rub video and here we are with a rub video. Bless y'all!!
The fact that they make and sell rubs and are willing to show us how to make it for cheap. Makes me want to both buy their product and make my own to see the differences and support these guys for doing a good job.
Thanks Malcom, this is as big a part of barbeque as smoke. Another good one.
THANK YOU for another great video!!!
What I love about this is that the base is just the start. Once you start playing around with it a bit, adding things, changing ratios, you can make a bespoke signature rub. It's like you're creating a "secret family recipe" for future generations.
Do you have more things to add to make a perfect homemade rub ?
Thanks Malcom , you have taught me a lot of course my friends don't know you so they think I am really great at this smoking stuff. I do use a lot of your rubs and sauces. Please keep up the great job. Thanks and in N.C. you are the king.
Thanks for the great video on bbq rubs Malcolm. Really appreciate your effort to inform fellow bbq enthusiasts!.
Thanks for sharing guys this rub looks fantastic. I'm gonna go to Sam's today and get what I need and make this rub. Keep up the great work guys
I made this rub with friends. You Americans know what you are doing, Absolutely amazing flavour, needs tweaking with the salt content, but a fantastic flavour. Thank you!!!!
Fantastic subject, great information, Thank you!
Malcolm you're inspiring, thanks for all your great video's.
This is great! Thanks again for another great video!
THX for the rub recipe!!!! I'll be mixin some up this weekend!!!!
Love your channel!!!
That’s a very good starting point for a basic dry rub. I’ve modified it to include SMOKED paprika and BROWN sugar instead of the tasteless regular paprika and white sugar. Can’t go wrong with anything Malcolm suggests
Thank you for this, lots of good info on rubs!!
This is just what I needed. Thanks Malcolm!
That was one of the most informative rub videos I've seen. I need to play with some of these ratios on my videos and see what happens. Thanks for great content and motivation to explore!
Love this style of video. You are a great interviewer. More like this please
Great video and discussion. Thanks to Malcolm and the Linns. There's not a lot of BBQ in my state so these videos are key to influencing how I cook. Keep up the great work!
Awesome video guys! Much appreciated!

Awesome rub recipe! It's now my basic rub that I use for a lot of different things. Considering the cost of buying rubs and just the fun of being able to put together your own rub thanks for sharing the recipe!
Do you have more things to add to make a perfect homemade rub ?
Awesome seasoning for most anything. Thanks for the good info

Love making my own rubs! Not sure I have ever measured! Kind of fun that it is never the same thing twice!
I always love your videos. Not too long, not too short. Just right. Great information. I had no idea that smoke liked to grab on to paprika. Thank you!
I love this rub so much! it tastes unreal!
Very sensible stuff, glad he mentioned "ratio", liked.
Thank fellas!
I just want to say thank you for all the important ingredients and how to just keep it real @ home!!! UGK 4Life
Legends! Respect.

Awesome video. Thanks.
Definitely a great base rub.
@BachieGaga 9 Thanks brother.
Nice video my friend ! ! ! Great and interesting idea ! ! ! Hello from FRANCE ! ! ! ! 🌟🍚🍎💖💛🍊🍎💖💛
Awesome idea doing this episode! Thanks Malcom
Malcom that was a great video, I'm going to try this rub souds fantastic
Awesome video . Simple and straightforward ... Looking forward to the next discussion .. Cheers
Great work gents. Can’t wait to give this a crack.
Just made this rub for chicken.. I'm in love 🍗😍🍗😍
Thank you for making this video Malcom! My wife just got me a PBC for Father's Day and I didn't have time to order a rub before making my first ever batch of ribs. This turned out great and was easy for a noob like me! The only thing I did was rub some brown sugar on top of this rub. I fully intend to buy some Killer Hogs in the future because I've heard great things. Definitely appreciate that you make videos like this even though you have your own products to sell!! Thanks!!!!
Great chef
Keep up the good amazing food!!!
Here in Far North Queensland Australia, I make it the same way, pretty much :)
Liked.
This content was awesome! for both basic rub or complex tailored tongue tastes , thank you for being so sharing about your skills-set guys! Nick from Cape Town South Africa
Great video man! I’m pretty new to making my own rubs and this is a great jumping off point.
I love this recipe I am going to have to try this on a venison roast that I was going to put on the grill. Thanks
Nice video, thank you
Great video very helpful
Great video Malcolm
This is my favorite since I started smoking a couple years ago. Started tweaking it the last couple batches, just doubled one up tonight.
This sounds very good, gonna check it out!😃👍🏾
Man, what a great video!
This is dope..thanks
I just made this rub and plan on applying it tonight on a few pork butts. I added a tablespoon of cinnamon. Firing up the treager. I can't wait
Cinnamon is a hugely underappreciated savory spice. I've never used it in a rub though. I'll have to try it - thanks for the idea. It's really great on stir-fry and pretty much any vegetable dish.
@@skywarrior00 I got the idea from a local bbq joint by me. Everyone loves the taste and can never figure out what makes that flavor lol
Nice bbq rub recipe.
bought the vortex after watching your vid on wings... OMG.. luv in it
Thanks I needed a basic rub
Thx for the information I've been making and competing (backyard)using my homemade rubs. Good to know that so far I'm doing it right I really like my beef and pork rub, chicken not so much having a lot of fun experimenting.
Very insightful video
Good video guys!
im a big supporter of 1:1 salt and sugar. I find most commercially available rubs to be way too salty. Also started adding a little powdered ginger into my memphis-style spicy rib rubs.
