  • In this video, I install the latest Manjaro ARM Beta 12 with KDE Plasma Mobile 5.25 on my PinePhone Pro and review new shell features! This somehow took the whole day to make, so please consider leaving a like, commenting some feedback, and sharing with friends.

    I recently bought a Linux-first phone called the PinePhone Pro from a company called Pine64. Pine64 made the hardware but none of the software for the device. However, there is a variety of software available that is created by the open-source software community. In this video, I use the terminal to update the packages (pieces of software) on the device. I then showcase some of the new changes in the software since the last release from Manjaro, the distribution I am using. Do note that they are not the ones making the software, but rather the ones pushing the new versions out to those using their distribution of Linux for ARM devices.

    This looks the most smooth and snappy I’ve ever seen on a pinephone. If they could just fix the battery issues it would appear to be daily driver ready.

      I currently get a little over an hour of constant usage from 100 to 0 percent which is not at all suitable for my daily driver needs. I am concerned that due to the power hungry modem and SoC that this can’t be significantly improved anytime soon (if at all). I am also concerned about heat as the phone get worryingly hot under load. Also, while I'm sure this will be fixed, Plasma shell crashes quite a lot (but is able to automatically recover in ~8-10 seconds unless it's the "loginctl" one) that can get annoying. Besides all of that (and the camera function), I'd say the device is ready. I'm currently enjoying it at home as a mini tablet (since I can't bring it outside/away from a charger).

      @@ItsMCBHere thanks for that elaboration on the battery power. I bought the braveheart edition and then installed the updated board but I've skipped out on the pro version. Sounds like I will probably wait for the next iteration of the PinePhone which will hopefully be stable and daily driver ready by then.

      Two issues interest me. Is it possible to encrypt LUKS the entire system? And is it possible to let go of the entire internet connection via the anonsurf?

      @@johnrambo5053 Full disk encryption is possible on some PPP distros. I installed Anonsurf with Und3rf10w's kali-anonsurf installer on Mobian to test and it seems to work as my IP appears to be coming from a tor exit node.

    I've never used KDE but I'm interested so possibly in the future. And you know that their mantra is to prioritize familiarity on out of the box experience then add customizability.
    Right now, I'm really envious of Plasma Mobile. Before the Pinephone, its development seem stagnant but now it's full steam ahead. It might have more development in the past 3 years or so than Lomiri in the past ~7 years.

    Light years ahead of phosh. Seriously phosh doesn't even give you home screens to add shortcut apps. Plus this looks surprisingly smooth considering the hardware. I'm impressed, maybe there's hope for it yet! Now we just need the battery life improved and we got us something :)

      Sorry for missing your comment. It somehow got flagged for "bad words" in my dashboard. I also really hope the battery situation improves because that is the major thing holding it back from becoming my daily driver.

      @@ItsMCBHere But I've seen people claim it's the phone's fault not the OS. Like some people claim to get a day of battery from a oneplus 6, which has only 3300mah so only 300mah more than the PPP. Can it be that the PPP is particularly hungry?

    • @ItsMCBHere
      @ItsMCBHere  Год назад +2

      @@sinekonata The device is for sure power hungry. The SoC is not designed for a phone. There are also other unfortunate factors at play that I don't remember exactly. Nevertheless, optimizations can be made on the software side that may help the situation but not remedy it.

    In the past Manjaro Plasma has struggled with calls and texting. How does the current release do? My PP has become my daily driver, but I've been using Mobian with Phosh for the past 6 months. I'm looking to do some more distro hopping but calls and texting are important since this is now my only cellphone.

      I am unable to test texting or calling because I need my SIM to be in my reliable Android phone at the moment. I suggest asking the KDE and or Pine64 community Matrix channels the same question.

    I can't keep my battery from draining super quick just while in sleep mode.

      I get around an hour and ten minutes of usage (screen on, apps open, navigating UI, not sleeping) the last time I tested it. If the device is sleeping the whole time, it can last about a day. I recently bought a battery case for the phone (not provided from Pine64) and plan to make a video on it's pro's and con's soon.

      I purchased a PinePhone Pro ~5 months ago. Basic things work as expected or with some tinkering such as needing to enter your carrier’s APN settings for all telephony features to work. I’ve installed Tow-Boot which lets me easily choose to boot the internal eMMC or microSD card. I am booting between the following setups: Manjaro ARM with Plasma Mobile and Mobian with Phosh.
      The current experience is quite usable! I currently use the phone to browse the web, listen to music, and catch up on my RSS feeds. The native software selection is somewhat limited but generally not a problem because of web apps and Waydroid for running Android apps. While a good chunk of apps do scale correctly, many don’t. Also, some are not available for the ARM architecture.
      The device is still not daily drivable yet. It probably won’t be for the next 6-12 months. Components like the camera are just starting to get early support in experimental kernels (xnux.eu/) and there are critical bugs. The most annoying one right now is that media will play at ~3x after waking up from suspend (ruclips.net/video/7piXOM8G2uQ/видео.html).
      It feels like a Linux mobile renaissance of sorts because of all the exciting things happening right now. Work is being done to mainline (improve/rewrite old and or incompatible code/device blobs for the modern kernel) Android phones like Google’s Pixel 3 (check out fosstodon.org/@calebccff 's awesome work) which excites me the most.
      There are other projects like Ubuntu Touch that are trying to create an ecosystem around their platform and have some support for Android devices through hardware abstraction layers (Halium) that works with the preexisting device blobs.
      The PinePhone Pro is a big step in the right direction for privacy respecting Linux-first mobile devices. I am satisfied with my purchase, but not sure if it will ever become my daily driver over my more reliable yet aging Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge. A mainlined Android device will probably bring the reliability and power I need to finally switch full-time in the near future. I’m sure Linux-first devices will catch up too but it will take time.
      Hope this helps!

      I'd say they're pretty good depending on which ones we're talking about. The biggest issue with the phone is battery life. I wouldn't suggest buying it if you aren't able to always be plugged in if you intend to daily drive it.

Where is windows phone now...? Sad!

    I think the Pinephone Pro is tooooo expensive, having in mind that they are NOT developing the software and have a lot of savings in that department, the pricing is abusive as there are other Android phones way more powerful than this one at that price range, they should consider making this phone more powerful if they wish to compete in the $400 US range.

    • @ItsMCBHere
      @ItsMCBHere  Год назад

      They are not competing. Their business model is to make and sell hardware on margin. They are not focused on the PinePhone but rather to continue coming up with new hardware to sell such as the Pinecil or PineTime.
