NYC passed a few new renters laws this past Summer including your application fee can never exceed $20.

We rented in July and the broker would not honor the new law. Said he knew nothing about it. Buyer (renter) beware. Broker told us the fee was for the credit check and they charged us $100 per renter or guarantor - so we ended up dumping $400 into application fees for two college students renters and we almost lost the apartment, got into a bidding war with another applicant even though we had the application in first. It is brutal to rent in NYC.
Please make a video diving more deep into the finances of living in NYC !! Like how you budget and how much money each part of your life takes i.e. rent, utilities, phone etc - it would be super helpful and interesting!

I am shocked by how expensive apartments in NYC/ the us in general are. I literally pay 350€ which I think is about 400$ - I have 2 roommates so about 1000€ total and I live in a wonderful central area of Vienna, Austria.

If I’m looking to move in August, when do you recommend that I start the apartment search in person? Would it be almost impossible to secure an apartment in March/April for August?

Honestly, what would be even more interesting to know is what do you do for a living to be able to afford living in NYC? For most people to be able to afford the luxury of living in NYC, they are most likely either born with money, in the medical field, or do something in finance or accounting. This Spring I will be graduating with my bachelors in accounting and business adminsitration (finance + management) and I've accepted a position to work for PwC in international taxation. While this may not be the most lucrative field out there I was surprised how little 95K will get me in Manhattan. I've been preparing a budget for the last two months now literally keeping track of everything that I buy and getting a feel for my cost of living, and it is making me exceptionally nervous to move down there becuase I want my quality of life to be adequate for the level of money I am making down there.

i was lived in soho, greene st. its also a decent location too. or try to find somewhere around quite cheaper area like pearl st, fidi.

I’m contemplating going to college in New York (The New School) but I’m intimidated by the expenses and lifestyle. I’m from Nashville so I’m afraid I won’t be able to thrive well there. Also I don’t think I can afford living there, but it’s been a lifelong dream and I finally have the opportunity to do so! I’m just a curious high schooler trying to work out the logistics and practicality of it all. I need someone to sit me down and tell it to me straight!
Wow I basically pay the same and live in a studio. I mean I don’t feel totally jipped bc I live in a luxury building with great amenities and a washer/dryer in unit.

Do you organize it through StreetEasy for example? I need to plan that in advance since I will be coming from Baltimore for the search just for short periodo of time...

Damn for 5000 i would rent a big house with about 5 bed in one of the best areas of Miami, Miami is pretty expensive tho but seems like living in NYC is impossible for me, well ill be in my next life.

Question: how much does rent increase annually in NYC? (like on avg. obviously). In Texas apartments can increase your rent by like hundreds of dollars per month each year you resign.
