  • Xuan, the younger of the two Tool Brothers, my favorite cell phone repair tools booth here in the Huaqiangbei electronics markets in Shenzhen, China, asked me to buy him a $200 USB powered "smart" screwdriver from the US when I was there this summer. I was skeptical - would it work? Is it worth that much money? Or is it just another overpriced gadget? Come along with us to find out...

Every manufacturer will buy its competitors product to test it and break it down, figure out what it does well and how it can be improved. If it’s not patented (not that patents matter much in China), then they can pretty much copy it all.

    • @Oleg-oe1rc
      @Oleg-oe1rc 5 лет назад +23

      @@greenthizzle4 Quite the opposite actually. Large screw drivers have a lot of supporting material to keep things rigid. Precision drivers like these have shafts that need to reach into tight areas and are basically needle thin, and have to withstand many pounds of pressure being put on them. Slightly too hard and they will snap like toothpicks, slightly to soft and the bend like a paper clip. Large drivers can have many times more defects in the metal without issue.

The first head of HK after 1997 had a social plan called “85K”, planning to build affordable housing in Hk. After part of that was accomplished, many Hkers started to be against it as they owm properties already and the property prices were going down due to this housing project. Hence the rest of the plan was abandoned as the government “gave in” to these people’s complaints. I suggest getting the fact straight and learning a bit more on the topic before commenting

    Hey Scotty! Let's get this man into some real research. Let us connect him to some of the machining masters of RUclips, they can get him in touch with the machining side of things which uses these kinds of bits and tools daily. I think he would benefit greatly from learning that there are many toolmakers and companies that specialize in doing exactly that! Producing high quality, precision drivers and bits. If he got in touch with their world I would be so glad. No need to buy a $200 screwdriver just for the bits. We can find out from what manufacturer did the company itself get it's bits and maybe even find ones that suit him better :)
    I would be so glad to help if I can in any way

      Sounds like Scotty needs to point him in the direction of metal tempering (hardering) if he is looking for "hard' screwdriver heads. I dont know if you can temper existing screw driver heads because of warping. I do know that a lot of places do not do it because it costs more to grind harder steel than softer steel.

      There's more machinists and toolmakers in China than anywhere else in the world 😁 the thing is... factory owners in China practically have a fetish for foreign tools. Partially because most of what tool factories in China produce is made as cheaply as possible for export. At the higher end of tools there are some decent companies in China now, but for screw driver bits most factories will just buy PB swisstools (or, if it's nothing critical... a big box of the cheapo Chinese ones and replace as needed).
