"In April, my 15-year-old son was competing in a national speech competition, and we were both ready to unwind as our flight took off. We had our snacks and books, and because our seats had screens, I knew we could laugh at our favorite shows. I thought I was ready.
What I was not ready for was having to shield my son's eyes from an explicit nude sex scene.
It happened after we settled in for our flight. I started looking through the options for in-flight entertainment. As I looked at my screen, I could see the one in the row in front of me. I saw a nude sex scene in clear view. To be clear, this was not a passenger's personal device. This scene was playing on the seat back, with the airline providing the entertainment.

Americans, we are such prudes 😂. In Europe, this is played on TV everywhere and surprisingly, teen pregnancy is a lot lower than in the USA. If this woman had taught her son about human sexuality at a much younger age, there would be no issue.

I agree. I am American but raised by European parents. Many Americans also have a big problem with separating a nude body with sexuality. And it's not like teenagers are not having sex. Trying to shield them from it is stupid and irresponsible on the parent's part. They should be open and honest with their children. I truly do no understand the mentality of some of these people, like this woman.

It's the parents responsibility to control what their child sees and views on an airplane video screen. If the person in front of your child is watching content that you think is inappropriate, there are other things YOU can do to mitigate this exposure rather than expecting the entire airline to change their content policies for a parent.
    Solutions to the problem:
    1. Don't fly on that airline.
    2. Pick a seat where there is nobody in front of you
    3. Give your child a sleep aide
    4. Drive to your destination instead of fly
    5. Buy a first class ticket and sit at the very front of the aircraft, you'll never see anyone else's content that way.
    6. Buy the airline and change the content that is available to be viewed in-flight.
    7. Explain to your son what sex is, why it is portrayed in movies, and point out the differences between a real experience and watching an R rated film.

      @imnotmike Год назад

Yeah, the issue is that if you're just glancing at a screen with no sound a row in front of you, it's usually pretty hard to tell that a murder is happening. They usually happen pretty quickly and are filmed in a way that if you aren't paying attention, it's hard to tell what happened. But with nudity, you don't need any context to get what's going on. You see some chick's hooters, you get that it's nudity.
Obviously it depends on the show. If you're watching some ultra violent Quentin Tarantino Kill Bill kind of movie with unrealistic fountains of blood coming out of people, then the violence could be an issue too.
But ultimately, they shouldn't be showing R rated movies in a public place. If a kid can't legally go see the movie in a theater then they obviously shouldn't be seeing it just because they look over at another passenger's screen in a public place.

Here's a point to ponder about US society in general, media and entertainment in particular, but in many ways not limited to just that. It's been suggested multiple times here that the airline should have taken steps to make the in-fight entertainment more 'kid friendly,' but on the flip side of that coin one must surely also ask why every human activity undertaken in a public space, as a number of posts suggest should be the case, has to be constructed so as to be suitable fare for a child.

    • @Gewlicious3

Amen. That person paid their fare to fly in the plane and they should have the right to watch whatever is available. Lots of movies have sex scenes or “scandalous” moments- get over it. Move seats if you need to, or distract the kid. Even if the kid is 5. The adult should not have to police what is on THEIR public screen because there happens to be someone else’s kid behind them. I’m sorry to say, but unless they decide to create “kid-only” flights, you have no standing.

I’ve known too many kids, many of them younger than 5, with a weird obsession with guns and killing people. No, they don’t completely understand what they’re role-playing, but there’s no doubt our media and the toys they play with heavily influence them towards these fixations.

I don't know about studies, but I do know basic psychology. If you repress something, it will surface. Mostly our brains our satisfied with just admitting a thing is real, and facing it. So I'm really talking about denial of the obvious existence of a thing, such as sex.
That's why admitting you're an alcoholic, or that you have any problem, is the first necessary step to overcome the problem. Sex is real. We all got here because of sex. The only bad thing here is an adult being embarrassed because their kid saw something related to sex, and the kid might ask them a question. They live in great dread of that. They don't want to have to explain sex to their kids.
I'm sure this is partly to blame for Christians assuming sex outside of marriage is bad. They want their kids to be grown adults, and married, and figure it out on their wedding night. But that's not going to happen. Their children, sick of being repressed, will seek knowledge of this natural urge, which allows for all mammalian life on the planet, at all costs. It will become an obsession to them. And who knows where that obsession could lead.
To prevent your children from being sickos, talk to them, bring it out in the open, explain how sex is natural.
