Good video. Any plans on perhaps testing some of the Highcom helmets I've been seeing lately? Been seeing their name pop up when it comes to armor and their IIIA helmets supposedly "defeat" a number of .357 and .44 magnum loads. And they also claim to have a "III+" rifle rated helmet that's rated to stop M80 ball going at about 2900, which makes me curious.
@@ABowlofPho
@sootch00 Shot a few of them
You need to find some way to secure to a clay block,,, with it just loosely resting on that post its able to spend some energy when it moves with the impact and the post bends..
What happened to the video of the Chinese helmet
@Oxide so of those two, are either of them comparable to an Ops Core Maritime? I have yet to see anyone do a review on one and from all accounts, they were the best helmet Ops Core had produced.
I always wanted to see an OpsCore SF penetration test since Garand Thumb said there are 2 rifle rated variants of it. Guess at least one of them wasn't very good after all lol
The only way to stop rifle rounds with a helmet is to have secondary up-armor plates that are attached onto your already 3a helmet
@@ExcitedSolarSystem-jr2rnthat’s literally so wrong but ok lmao
The RF1 helmet is rated fully for 556 and 7.62 MSC, highcom makes one aswell
@@Marksman5147 yes... at 2500 fps... meaning its rated to stop at 5.56 at like 400 yards...a point blank shot from a 5.56 will smoke you
@@ExcitedSolarSystem-jr2rn it’s rated against m193 556 at 3,250fps…
Nice of you to take that up tho.
It’s rated against 7.62x39 mild steel core @2,380fps and 7.62 NATO M80 @2,700fps
You can make a full helmet out of the same material as the up armor plates it’s just expensive, hence the price.
@@Marksman5147 like i said... you need up armor to stop rifle bullets and survive..... all helmets are NIJ 3A. Its made to stop shrapnel. Not a rifle bullet at point blank range... keep leing to yourself tho.
Literally we are just buying the name not protection
That's not entirely true man no helmet is going to do good at that range. My only complaint with the videos is that he should be shooting them farther away as well as up close. I have personally deployed and worn this helmet on rotations and seen it save people's lives.
I will absolutely say this though anybody looking to get into helmets just buy an ACH get good pads and a good retaining system and you'll be better than good.
@@ElMachoMucho Both of these things can be true. People have absolutely had their lives saved by Ops-Cores but the helmet itself could be just as functional as an ECH, really the only difference between them (it seems) is 0.5 pounds of weight.
@@ElMachoMuchowhat do you mean “shooting at that range”? Bullet velocity is bullet velocity, Ops Core advertised the XR in defeating 7.62x39 at 2400FPS which is the standard muzzle velocity for that round. That’s deceptive on their part and they know it.
At further distances with lower bullet velocity you’re better off w/ mil surplus ACH/ECH. The Marine Corps still contracts Gentex to produce high cut ECH helmets
@@ElMachoMucho God I always get this fuckin comment. If I want to test at range I can load rounds light, but NIJ isn't from range. Also lots of helmets do well at close range. Really annoying.
@@jwhiskey534 it did defeat the round, though 🤷🏻♂️
Anyone running one of these would be lying to themselves if they think it’ll tank a full on hit from a rifle, or even pistol round and be able to walk away unphased. Frag or a glancing blow? Probably, but I think surviving these impacts is more likely.

This video has me realizing why we haven't seen the army or marines adopt opscore helmets. Because you are paying a premium for what seems like the same exact ballistic protection. For once this seems like a smart move by the military.
JSOC adopted the opscore, the marines and army adopted the ECH. Both helmets are fine and have unique advantages. Watch my ECH video.
I mean dude literally shot a helmet in the back with led core from like 5 feet, in most situations that won’t ever happen.

Damn....I tip my hat for you spending your own money doing these tests.
Keep at it Oxide!
weapons outfitter gave him the helmets
Maybe he is referring to all the Russian stuff that are eBay stuff
opscore sf owner. I expected better, but my main purpose for having a helmet is light weight ability to hold night vision and coms. I got this over the bump for added frag protection. Crazy results though. It doesn't make me not want my helmet, but it's good to know the limitations. Everything can fail at a certain point.
I mean, there artent really any better helmets, My broke ass still rolls with a standard ACH
Same. Better protection equals more weight. Everything is a trade off. If my helmet gets heavy enough, I’ll find excuses to take it off or not wear it, and then I have zero protection.
If it’ll stop a 9mm and it’s light, I’ll take it
Opscore are fine, the XR is fine, it does what it’s supposed too.
The SF just had less protection than other standard IIIa opscore because it’s a lighter thinner material… which means less protection.
The kicker is the SF is their “premium” helmet and they charge more… yea I’m good on that one.
I'd love to see a test of a "home cut" ACH or ECH with the classic methods of reinforcing/epoxying the cuts... We poors need answers! 😂
Yes please make a video on this. Just bought an ach and have been considering making it into a high cut.
KustomACH does a great job doing these cuts
@@Nperez1986 yeah I was probably gonna go thru them or cut it myself. It's still all up in the air though.
Not a good idea to do a "home cut" ECH as UHWMPE reacts differently to being "compromised" vs kevlar. Oxide even mentions it in his ECH video.
@@ABowlofPho I have an ach which is kevlar
Amazing work as always 💯
There's a little known law that affects the price. It's often why stuff is so high. A helmet or any other item a company sells at a marked up price to get rich off the military contracts has a rule. They can't turn around and sell the same item to the public for a cheaper, more realistic price. So companies like these have no choice when they bite into those juicy government contracts. If they sell the exact item to the public for a real price they'll lose the contract. Sometimes companies will try and skirt this and make a civilian model so they can double dip so to speak. Most are just content with charging the gov a high price. It's part of how they justify the price gouge, because they can't sell mass amounts like other products to the civilian market too.
Not sure what the laws name is. But I hear it's why some rifles are crazy expensive. I'm sure it applies to all items and not just rifles tho.
Good video thanks
Very cool, my brain now has severe TBI inducing deformation.
aftering seeing that Ukrainian soldier that took some shrapnel to the ear area on his helmet I wouldn't ever wear anything that doesn't also cover the ear.
Yeah that low cut thing works for sf guys. But grunts under artillery fire need more protection
You can always make out the guys who have zero experience with actually wearing helmets by these posts
If you wore the ops core xp and got shot with that 7.62x39 your skull would have been caved in and you'd be dead.
love the VHS optics!!
(the part around 1:25 is seriously painful to watch tho....which is also kinda cool)
This is pretty damn eye opening really I honestly thought theyd perform better considering the price. I knew the sf would deform worse because the sacrifice of protection for weight savings but honestly thought it wouldn't be as bad as it was. Pretty deceptive marketing on opscores part thanks for the quality content.
The absolute copium we are about to see from Opscore owners in these comments is gonna be fantastic thank you Oxide
Great video, thanks for putting this out there. In OpsCores defence there is more to a helmet than just the protection offered like features, "wearability ", quality of manufacture etc etc. But agreed the cost does seem excessive compared to similar offerings from other manufacturers.
I wore my opscore on three deployments. Never thought It'd save me from a full AK, but frag, sure. Mostly I loved the Peltor and NOD support. And the fact it made the 75th Easily more identifiable. Never hated the weight.
everytime you post a new video its like a holiday and it makes my day watching it
now the question is how the older OpsCores compare, LBH, MT, XP, etc.
And what about the Team Wendy EXFIL and SL? From their website they do seem to be claiming “full” NIJ IIIA capability under standard 0108.01… kinda glad that’s what I have, but still nervous that in reality performance may not be as advertised!
@@yzhou05 i've heard that TW has had some bfd issues
What about galvion/revision helmets, mtek flux, crye airframe, etc…?
@@ThatGearCollector2002 airframe has already a reputation of bad performance
You should've put a dummy head or a watermelon in it. When you leave it empty you're just allowing room for the polyethylene to expand. It's like stabbing a piece of paper that's in the air vs stabbing one that's against a backing of some sort. Now I could be completely wrong but I think it'd allow you to see damage to a would be skull due to deformation
You’re right. The good news is the results are obvious in this case without a head form. Expect to see a head form in future videos.
Hot damn. Well, feeling pretty good about getting my ACH professionally cut to a Maritime pattern now.
This is why I'm just waiting for one of my Marine buddies to sneak out one of their new high cut ECHs.
I suspect that in many of the cases where Ops-Cores or similar helmets did stop rifle rounds, it was because those rounds were fired from a longer distance rather than point blank range.
Yes because at further distances the bullet velocity decreases.
Ops Core advertised their XR can defeat 7.62x39 at 2400FPS which is the common muzzle velocity. He used 💩 ammo (lower muzzle velocity) and the helmet still got wrecked.
And also luck with the angle of the impact
Ooof. Ops Core XR’s will definitely catch a 7.62x39 at 2400-2300 FPS but will leave you a vegetable 😁💀
Imagine the misfortune of "surviving" that.
Wow spend $1000-$3000 so an ops core can let you get killed by back deformation when a Chinese $150-$400 will kill you just as good for less! Nice.
Bro the longfri ballistic helmet performs better than the opscore in deformation honestly. If you can get over the weight difference, $200-$400 is way better than $2000
All the people shitting on HHV helmet owners for the past year, when an ops core literally performed as bad for 5 times the price.
Poor is a state of mind. Ops core cope is peak poor.

more like ECH for 4x the price. there are dozens of ebay ECH listings for $500. what i don't get is how helmet polyethylene is so much worse than polyethylene plates. a poly plate has no BFD at all. i guess cuz the plates are a bit thicker? but so what, thy hardly weigh anything and preventing your skull from caving in is worth a few mm more thickness.

British helmet is coming
Hey dad I know HHV made some lattice-whatever the fuck they called it liner that supposedly helps with backface deformation. Maybe if you try those in combo with the polyethilene helmets that might lead to different results?
If your soldiers are just prisoners -- they probably don't need much brain, so these are effective.
Soldiers don't wear these
I think you should have placed each helmet on a dummy head for accurate reresentation
It doesn’t matter
@Oxide yes it does
isn't the suspension system an important part of the helmet's rating? And just like you can't test a ballistic vest against a hard surface (NIJ specifically requires ballistics clay backing), putting it on a post probably isn't all that accurate either.
Damn they're cheaper in tarkov than IRL
Gotta love all the folks paying $$$ for Ops Core Helmets since they wanna look like cool kids...
Thank you for your service solider.
Airsoftners are the real heros. Hold what you've got.
What a deformations! much worse than ECH helmet than i expected. very frustrated...
Before this video, i have some criticisms to ECH helmet, but after watching this video i will use ECH only.
May be ARMY's Advanced combat helmet much better than both of them(SF/XR, maybe older maritime&FAST).
ACH is better against high energy hits, ECH protects you from steel penetrators
They may stop a round penetrating but with the internal deformation you'd likely end up becoming a vegetable with server brain damage, think I'd rather go out clean
I agree with the opcore part, they are pretty expensive unlike their competitors who do sell quite cheaper, but it's probably because of their name in the helmet industry
Very nice test, looking forward to more.
At about 8:12 (there was also an earlier point in the vid) there appears to be a marking on the polyethylene. Care to disclose what the brand and model number the polyethylene material is?
This way nerds can know what these helmets are made of because there are different “grades” of polyethylene. This is common with soft body armor where you can sometimes see the brand/model printed on the individual layers if you cut it open and pull it apart.
Dynama :)
WooWW shocking result
I don’t run helmets, I just duck at random 3 to 28 second intervals
7:47 where does he source batteries for that PAS-13B? Asking for a friend. Or are there modern battery pack mods that’ll work?
Figure out what voltage it needs and make a battery pack with protection. It's barely a weekend project.
Don't take my word only on this, but it looks like it uses 7.4v nominal cells, so literally wiring up airsoft Lipo 7.4v batteries would work.
Lithium ion battery at 7.4 works
well i guess no one survives the deformation that a lead core X39 round imparts on their helmet and therefore they cannot sue. They might as well advertise resistance to .50 BMG or RPG 27 impacts
I'm noticing a lot more people complaining about the distance you shot them at compared to the other tests, I'm sensing an overdose of copium

I mean weight matters too. Also ease of attaching accessories matters as well. I do find it odd that Opscore SF is $1000 more than TW Exfil SL, and they are essentially the same weight.
