I might be able to answer your question at the end of the video about the dark little squares: if you imagine wood as a bunch of little tubes, it comes close to what wood actually is. The little squares take much more oil inside as this surface consists of open tubes. You can observe it while oiling. All the best, and have fun with your next projects!
Great video! I liked the way you addressed the screws coming through the box top, it looked as it it was an intentional inlay. I’m no wood expert, but it appears the darker areas are all end grain? If that’s the case, the end grain will almost always appear darker than the face/edge grain after finish is applied or maybe I should say in every experience I’ve had, the end grains been darker. But that darker area gives that box beautiful highlights.

Hi, thanks for the comment. By little squares i meant not the end grain of the tail board but the square pegs at the bottom which are end grain too.
