I chose to cover myself from head to toe against my dad’s wishes. I did it to protect myself from the nasty men who wouldn’t leave me alone. Also, in Islam the prophet Pbuh mentioned the mother 3 times before he mentioned the father when he was asked who the most important person to someone should be. I do understand that a lot of Muslim women are oppressed by their cultures but it has nothing to do with Islam. All of the Muslim women I know have chosen to cover up because they want to.

As a muslim woman, I think that there’s a beautiful wisdom behind the (asking the father for the daughther’s hand thing), not only coz of the reasons Ali mentioned (which logically speaking even if you see it from a psychological perspective, if he asked the mother for example and not the father, us women being generally emotional beings (not all, generally) we might not see what a fellow man will see when he sees a potential spouse for his daughter or sister or niece etc) but aside from all this.. I personally think it is because islam elevated women like no other religion or society did, a woman is treated like a queen, the way she deserves, if a man desires her then he’ll have to overcome those obstacles (asking and getting blessings from the family, agreeing to the dowry and all conditions placed, and then most importantly, even IF the man meets all of this ..qualifications? 😂.. she has the right to decide if she wants him or not.. like even if the father himself wants her to marry the man and is pleased with the potential partner, if she, after he already went through all of that. Said no, then no one can say anything to her. The his money is hers, but hers is hers alone as well, and so, SO many things (when it comes to just marriage), all to protect and place respect for the women. It gives women EQUITY, NOT equality, sth way better than any feminist movement could ever bring forth for women. And as for the victim blaming point she brought up (or rather, why women should cover up just because men can’t control themselves), for me the most important part of covering up, is submitting to Allah, regardless of the reasons, reason(s), because ofc there are many reasons whether we know or acknowledge them all or not. If you are a believer and you know God AlMighty decreed things and you fully believe that everything He decrees os for our own good, then for me that’s enough, I don’t even need to know the reason behind every single thing that is decreed. So the core and most important thing is to first understand what and why you believe in what you believe (God’s existence God’s words God’s decrees God’s wisdome mercy judgment etc etc), before questioning other things. Because if you do not even believe in any of that then there’s no point in going forward, you’ll never accept or understand any of it. God created us and as such He knows us best, He wired us to be the way we are, if He made men love and desire women the way they do, and not being able to resist, then it makes sense that regardless if they do their part in lowering their gazes or not, us women should do our own part for our OWN sakes, again it is to protect and elevate us. Even in the Quran, there is a verse that Allah lists worldly things man loves and desires, and first on the list is WOMEN, not money, not power and fame, not offspring, women, first, then the other things (money gold offspring etc etc) Second is, let’s face it ladies, no matter how hard you try to pin in against men and how hard you deny it, men are men, they themselves admit it and tell us this so why deny and refuse it?!! They themselves say women are their weakness, it’s not victim blaming, it’s a fact and they themselves say so. they’re visual creatures and desire women in a different way than how women desire men (again, ofc there are exceptions, some men dont desire women that way or that much, and some women desire men and are attracted to them physically more then other women, but those are the exceptions, not the rule). And any woman who says no men should stop being pigs are just lying to themselves. Coz let’s face it, even I, ME, a woman, sometimes have a hard time lowering my gaze if I see a woman with a beautiful body, especially if she’s wearing tight clothes or clothes that accentuates certain features, my gaze automatically goes there without me realizing or being aware of it, how about men who are even more attracted to women and who desires them greatly? Womens bodies are beautiful, they’re soft and round and curvy, they just are made like that, attractive and enchanting, yes men have beautiful bodies too (especially if they’re toned and healthy/strong (ofc depends on taste too but GENERALLY), yet they still dont turn eyes and enchant others the way women’s bodies do. And lastly, I personally really think it is to protect us NOT only from men’s desires, but also ourselves FROM ourselves, from our own desire to be desired, we naturally ARE like that. We naturally want to look pretty and well kept, smell good and look good, want to show off to everyone (men and women), I do really believe we have that inclination, like even as a hijabi, when in gatherings with friends I want to look pretty to myself and to my friends, so honestly really I do believe hijab is protecting US from forgetting ourselves too and losing sight of what really matters. Everytime I hear someone says muslim women are oppressed because we have to wear a khimar (hijab that covers our chest area), I cant help but to laugh 😂 Sister, I was born in a muslim country, I as a girl was allowed education for free, my healthcare is free and I get to choose whom I married and Masha Allah my husband is doing his best to provide for me, and I can work, we are allowed to go to work. With hijab, we muslim women choose to wear it because we love Almighty God and we want to please him for all the blessings and sustenance that He had given us, not because someone else told us to. Its not even near oppressing to me. In marriage we have rights too, we are not our husband’s property. Don’t confuse Islam and Muslims, muslims can be bad they can choose not to follow the laws but they still call them muslims. Islam the religion itself is perfect. I am a Muslima and I love to cover up. I can decide who can see my body and who doesn‘t and that I am not judged by my body. I wish every Woman could see it like that. Maybe it would be nice if another women explained it to her.
I totally respect that and understand that mindset, however it’s the same in reverse. As someone who doesn’t cover up, I also decide who can see my body when, because I choose what I want to wear. I think Ali explained some good points, however I would beg to differ on a big point - not covering yourself does not mean that you are OFFERING your body to anyone. Your body is simply there existing, nobody is entitled to it.

I hate it how women recognize that men can be creeps but when it comes to the idea of marriage they forget men can be creeps as in ppl questioning why a father should speak to the young man in question. A woman can tell when another woman is flirting and if you are a man that was raised around women, you can tell too and vice versa. It reminds me of my old-self, I couldn't understand many things of Islam and said many times I would never become a Muslim because Islam was extreme, strange, unfair, etc... but after some time of research I came to realize that nothing makes more sense in order to live in a better society where there wouldn't be room for error... When she says her dad apparently owns her according to Islam, she should ask herself firstly why is it in western culture and weddings it is the father that walks their daughter down the Aisle to give her away to her future husband.
Thing is even in the western world, your parents are regarded as your guardians until you become an adult, so in that sense everyone is independent. The same applies for Islam, the reason as to why the male relatives meet the future groom is due to security reasons.

I work with many professional women and several of them told how they envy the lifestyle of Muslim women.
I chose to cover myself from head to toe against my dad’s wishes. I did it to protect myself from the nasty men who wouldn’t leave me alone. Also, in Islam the prophet Pbuh mentioned the mother 3 times before he mentioned the father when he was asked who the most important person to someone should be. I do understand that a lot of Muslim women are oppressed by their cultures but it has nothing to do with Islam. All of the Muslim women I know have chosen to cover up because they want to.
Honey, women were far more liberated before Islam came, take the prophet's first wife for example Khadija she was a powerful well known independant merchant who employed muhammad! Few years after her death Muhammad started preaching sexism and didn't condemn the discusting muslim men's perverted behaviours so he had women dress in Burqas and be "obediant to their men" because if don't they are beaten. Oh yeah and if those silly women refuse their husbands on the bed then the angels will curse them all night longue shame on them for not consenting!!

As a muslim woman, I think that there’s a beautiful wisdom behind the (asking the father for the daughther’s hand thing), not only coz of the reasons Ali mentioned (which logically speaking even if you see it from a psychological perspective, if he asked the mother for example and not the father, us women being generally emotional beings (not all, generally) we might not see what a fellow man will see when he sees a potential spouse for his daughter or sister or niece etc) but aside from all this..
I personally think it is because islam elevated women like no other religion or society did, a woman is treated like a queen, the way she deserves, if a man desires her then he’ll have to overcome those obstacles (asking and getting blessings from the family, agreeing to the dowry and all conditions placed, and then most importantly, even IF the man meets all of this ..qualifications? 😂.. she has the right to decide if she wants him or not.. like even if the father himself wants her to marry the man and is pleased with the potential partner, if she, after he already went through all of that. Said no, then no one can say anything to her. The his money is hers, but hers is hers alone as well, and so, SO many things (when it comes to just marriage), all to protect and place respect for the women. It gives women EQUITY, NOT equality, sth way better than any feminist movement could ever bring forth for women. Alhamdulillah
Ps: I’m no scholar and this is by NO MEANS any fatwa, this is my personal opinion and how I like to see how islam elevated us women, is it truly the wisdom behind what Allah decreed? idk. Allah knows best.
And as for the victim blaming point she brought up (or rather, why women should cover up just because men can’t control themselves), for me the most important part of covering up, is submitting to Allah, regardless of the reasons, reason(s), because ofc there are many reasons whether we know or acknowledge them all or not. If you are a believer and you know God AlMighty decreed things and you fully believe that everything He decrees os for our own good, then for me that’s enough, I don’t even need to know the reason behind every single thing that is decreed. So the core and most important thing is to first understand what and why you believe in what you believe (God’s existence God’s words God’s decrees God’s wisdome mercy judgment etc etc), before questioning other things. Because if you do not even believe in any of that then there’s no point in going forward, you’ll never accept or understand any of it. God created us and as such He knows us best, He wired us to be the way we are, if He made men love and desire women the way they do, and not being able to resist, then it makes sense that regardless if they do their part in lowering their gazes or not, us women should do our own part for our OWN sakes, again it is to protect and elevate us. Even in the Quran, there is a verse that Allah lists worldly things man loves and desires, and first on the list is WOMEN, not money, not power and fame, not offspring, women, first, then the other things (money gold offspring etc etc)
Second is, let’s face it ladies, no matter how hard you try to pin in against men and how hard you deny it, men are men, they themselves admit it and tell us this so why deny and refuse it?!! They themselves say women are their weakness, it’s not victim blaming, it’s a fact and they themselves say so.
they’re visual creatures and desire women in a different way than how women desire men (again, ofc there are exceptions, some men dont desire women that way or that much, and some women desire men and are attracted to them physically more then other women, but those are the exceptions, not the rule).
And any woman who says no men should stop being pigs are just lying to themselves. Coz let’s face it, even I, ME, a woman, sometimes have a hard time lowering my gaze if I see a woman with a beautiful body, especially if she’s wearing tight clothes or clothes that accentuates certain features, my gaze automatically goes there without me realizing or being aware of it, how about men who are even more attracted to women and who desires them greatly?
Womens bodies are beautiful, they’re soft and round and curvy, they just are made like that, attractive and enchanting, yes men have beautiful bodies too (especially if they’re toned and healthy/strong (ofc depends on taste too but GENERALLY), yet they still dont turn eyes and enchant others the way women’s bodies do.
And lastly, I personally really think it is to protect us NOT only from men’s desires, but also ourselves FROM ourselves, from our own desire to be desired, we naturally ARE like that. We naturally want to look pretty and well kept, smell good and look good, want to show off to everyone (men and women), I do really believe we have that inclination, like even as a hijabi, when in gatherings with friends I want to look pretty to myself and to my friends, so honestly really I do believe hijab is protecting US from forgetting ourselves too and losing sight of what really matters. To be respected for US, not our looks, so when someone talks to me they talk to me and respect me as the person I am, my intellect and my personality, I don’t need approval of my loons from all the men species, having that kept for myself, fellow ladies and significant other is enough.

Adornment for mankind is love to desire of women and sons and in heaps of [the] gold and [the] silver and [the] branded horses and [the] cattle and tilled land, That (is) provision (of) life (of) the world but with Allah is the excellent abode to return
All mankind means all men and women both love women, and sons and heap of gold and silver, can not stop loving women and having a lot of sons and gold. and now in next verse Almighty God is asking WHO made this Haram what made to adore.

Now in verse 24:31 women can leave it open which remain open that is the parts which remain open in Waddu.

Sister, I was born in a muslim country, I as a girl was allowed education for free, my healthcare is free and I get to choose whom I married and Masha Allah my husband is doing his best to provide for me, and I can work, we are allowed to go to work.
With hijab, we muslim women choose to wear it because we love Almighty God and we want to please him for all the blessings and sustenance that He had given us, not because someone else told us to.
Its not even near oppressing to me. In marriage we have rights too, we are not our husband’s property.

I can see that she was still skeptical, but at the same time this discussion clearly gave her food for thoughts... It reminds me of my old-self, I couldn't understand many things of Islam and said many times I would never become a Muslim because Islam was extreme, strange, unfair, etc... but after some time of research I came to realize that nothing makes more sense in order to live in a better society where there wouldn't be room for error... Now I can't wait to take the next step and start wearing hijab and became a better Muslim every day. Embracing Islam doesn't mean being oppressed, on the contrary it gives you a lot in this life. Thank you Allah for choosing me and for curing my blindness and deafness I was living in.
