I always preferred more “Are you afraid of the dark?” over “Goosebumps”.
AYAOTD had the better plot-twists, monster costumes, special effects, and eerie music. And most importantly...it was real scary for being a kids show!
The cliffhanger endings from Goosebumps always pissed me off as a kid.
Plus the story of the possessed puppet seem like a ripoff of Child’s Play.
watched goosebumps after I finished a binge of AYAOTD long time ago, and I mean back when I was a kid, since im psure AYAOTD was older than me, but bac then me and my siblings watched every episode on youtube multiple times
anyways I much preferred the goosebumps books, I think the scariest thing I saw in a goosebumps "episode" was two dolls fighting
it doesn't help that back then goosebumps was not nearly as available on youtube as AYAOTD was
Sorry I'm so late, but I can tell you why Slappy the Dummy felt like Chucky from Child's Play.
It's because they both took inspiration from old Twilight Zone episodes like The Dummy and The Living Doll aka the "Talking Tina" episode.
If you ever watch the old Twilight Zone show, you see so many themes that ended up inspiring like 80% of nearly all horror we enjoy today. Especially 90s kid style horror.

In 2019, Alex, they re-did Are You Afraid of The Dark, and it’s much shorter. Like 3 episodes (I think). You should really watch it it’s a lot creepier.
Travis’ Misadventures it doesn’t finish tho. It ends on a cliffhanger (but like where it would have more episodes)

Shows like "Are you afraid of the dark" and "Goosebumps" got young kids into the horror genre. Granted these shows were kind of babyish horror, but it peaked kids interest. I went from watching shows like this to "Tales from the Crypt" and the "Creepshow" movies. Then I got into Stephen king. Watching these shows got me to be a life long horror fan.

That is exactly the lineup of horror offerings I discovered growing up! I also loved shows like Beetlejuice and Eerie Indiana, and about the time I was getting into Stephen King, I also watched some really old horror movies like Hitchcock's Psycho and The Birds, and old Vincent Price movies like House on Haunted Hill and The Tingler.
Also, the Shining. That's a movie everyone needs to watch at least once!

Honestly tho the story about the Chameleons was weirder for me.
What made Are You Afraid of the Dark? great was the Midnight Society. This concept of a bunch of kids siting around a campfire telling scary stories was awesome. You just wished you could sit in with them or tell a story of your own.
Also the stories themselves were pretty spooky, and you could see themes behind each of the kids telling them. Kristen tended to feature a lot of ghost stories, Betty Ann had creature features, Kiki stories held warnings for being careless or self absorbed, Tucker had protagonists with sibling rivalry issues, Frank had his wonderful Dr Vink character and Gary's stories were about magic.
It was a great show, even if the effects are cheesy by today's standards.

I still have this one memory when I was watching this show.
Here I was sitting on the floor in front of the tv, possibly in the dark for effect, holding my knees to my chest. These two campers are put in a life or death situation where one is trap in a guillotine and the other had to unlock her but had accidentally drop the key in a bucket of mice that was close by.
Now I was positively scared, for the girl able to become headless, the girl who is afraid of mice having to reach in the bucket to get the key, and there’s a timer.
So at the most scariest part as the girls scream, I screamed and with a open mouth I banged my teeth into my bony knee and lose a tooth.
I totally freak my parents and they turn off the tv before I could find out what happened to the girls.

That movie terrified my older sister when it first came out. I recently watched it (since i forgot what it was about) and I have to say, it wasn't terrible. It was weird and childish. I understood why my sister wet her pants at the mention of this movie. I'm a little shocked by the fact that I actually enjoyed this movie.

Honestly it's probably one of those with the adrenaline rush, excitement, and pressure of being on tv it's harder in the heat of the moment.
i read an interview with one of the kids that was on the show. basically said that they worked em like dogs and about time they finally made it to the monkey thing they were exhausted scared not into it anymore.
Yeah I hated those kids. Opportunity of a lifetime, every 90s kids dream, and he fucked it up at the damn statue
Actually it was pretty intense for the kids on the show. It was a whole day of filming and they would film multiple episodes at once, so these kids were waiting hours just to run through the obstacle course, on top of that they had to study the story they were going to be quizzed on for that episode. By the time they got to the silver monkey statue the kids were pretty tired. I recommend watching Defunctland's video about Legends of The Hidden Temple its pretty interesting

As an English major, the point of a plot twist is it for it to be believable by the consumer. A plot twist isn't to confuse the reader but be a believable surprise and it means the writer laid down the groundwork really beautifully
