Nice video. You make a lot of good points about the camera and its capabilities. I'm a Pentax shooter myself. Currently I use the K-5II. I was looking to take a step up and consider the K-3 III, but it is quite expensive. A used K-3 II would be a better choice for me.
Nice video! Thank you! It's always nice to see new Pentax video reports. I bough my with dead LCD, but still can use it via hdmi cable and an usual monitor... so still didn't shoot milky way because of caring the monitor problems)) but looking forward to get new lcd screen and starting to travel and shoot my first milky way. I have the same kit bundle, and like the lens a lot because of the WR and it performance :)
It's a real shame Pentax seem to be fading into obscurity so it's great that you've given some positive press and are enjoying their cameras. The star tracer function looks great. I first heard about it with their FF cameras and didn't know they had it on their crop sensor cameras. I really Enjoy my vintage Pentax Super Takumar lenses, I hope Pentax pull back some popularity again. I'll certainly at least look into them. Thanks for the very interesting video, and fantastic shots!
The Astrotracer functionality is a feature in the K-5, K-3, K-70, KP and K-1 models. The ones withpit the built in GPS needs the O-GPS1 to be mounted in the hos shoe.
LR has accepted Pentax PEF raw files for a while now - advantage is they take less room on card (marginally) but seem to write faster clearing buffer sooner.
0:37 maybe limited if you only take into account the newest suite of lenses :) There's a huge treasure trove of vintage glass available, as you've also mentioned at 1:41, and it's all stabilized thanks to IBIS! I can recommend the Takumar 135mm F/3.5 in particular, it has lovely colour rendering, is very cheap, and has superb build quality.
An explanation of how the star tracer aspect of the camera works would have been nice. I assume this camera has image stabilisation built into the sensor and somehow uses that to track the stars.
It’s using the image stabilisation unit to move the sensor. It’s a feature on the the K-5, K-3, K-70, KP and the K-1 models (I & II). For cameras without a built in GPS, you buy the O-GPS1 unit and click it in the hot shoe. I have the K3-11 I bought used from KEH camera I also have the K70 I bought new . I have the Samyang 14mm 2.8 I photographed the milky Way with K70. I have the Chinar 135mm 2.8 lens. I'm using for astrophotography.
I love pentax camera and lenses back in those film days. Especially their lenses are very sharp. But in this digital age, they are lagging behind especially their functionality as a camera.. ie as u pointed out they have fixed screen. And goodness me their gps module is so expensive given the fact of its function. I would save the money and buy a star tracker instead.
Most of the latest Pentax DSLRs do now have articlated screens. Check out 'Pentax Astrophotography Series | Part One: Overview of Cameras' on RUclips: ruclips.net/video/IlTk4w0PS2g/видео.html
A bit deceptive, because you can’t get a clear foreground (like your sample photo) using astrotracer. An explanation of how you get a clear foreground in the same image would be helpful. You obviously can’t do it in one shot, and for those without photoshop, such as myself, the whole ‘blending photos’ thing seems a bit tedious or difficult. I only use Lightroom. I’ve had a K-3 and GPS unit for years, but never used it, because of that precise problem.
If cost of s/w is an issue (PS is expensive, even subscription based) get Affinity Photo. Nearly PS level stuff and inexpensive. It has great compositing tools that make replacing blurry foregrounds with static foregrounds relatively easy.
I fell the same. Canon dslr user and i would like to take shoots with a skywatcher star adventurer and blablabla...No, no and no. I need more simplicity and i don't need more complements. I go to see the K3 mk III and i will decide tp buy it.

I have the K-70 and bought the GPS module. I like this DSLR because it has the flip screen.

Personal choices I guess

Thanks for this video. You mentioned milky way but do you think the Astrotracer also works well for example the Orion Nebula shots?
Like your video s thinkin off getting 6 d it has GPS could you do the tracking as with the Pentax
I'm afraid not. The astrotracer is unique to Pentax

I'm working on a video dedicated to explaining and showing the Astrotracer in action. It should be ready soon 👍
@@BudgetAstroPics I have the same question.

Yes, you're echoing a lot of people's feelings about Pentax cameras. It really is an individual choice

A new video! Awesome!!! ❤️❤️
Cheers mate 😊👍
What lens are you using mate ? Looking to buy the same lens
Jason just wondering what is the maximum focal lenght you can use on this camera without star trailing?
Nice one 👌

If you use a short enough exposure time you can minimise the motion blur of foreground objects so it's not so noticeable. I've done that many times 👍
