Couldn’t wait around to see the cars owner return. It would have been fun! A very good lesson to be careful where you park!
Those cars are lucky... I worked in MASS. as a firefighter and one fire i went to we put the hydrant line through the windows of the car in front of the hydrant and they were NOT opened. That's what you get for parking in front of a fire hydrant. Mike
@@liamcragin no, that’s not why, the vehicles were parked in such a way, that feeding the hose through windows would kink the hose even more than it would be trying to go around them. Have the Fire Department call an authorized Tow company to the scene to tow the vehicles out from the hydrant if able to. Second, allow for Fireman on the scene to issue a summons with penalties 3x the rate because the hydrant was blocked during a fire. A substantial fine will do it and if towed away, it really can be a thorn in the side of its owner.
I always said that any FDNY operation that has a blocked hydrant would mandate a court appearance ticket; and, in the event of a civilian hospitalization or worse, a death - charged with a felony!

This is just unacceptable, I don't care who or what they are. And yes, this has become a major issue in NYC. It absolutely blows my mind. I don't know what the answer is, maybe barriers on either side with bright yellow stripes painted on the road? The outdoor dining on the road isn't helping taking up much needed parking spaces, but that's not an excuse to park in front of a fire hydrant.
@@RobertKorte1 Great idea. many people who park in Manhattan are coming in from out of state. Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Jersey & Delaware mostly. Ticket them if you want but there's little chance the City will get paid. A study this spring reported NYC has over $1B in unpaid traffic tickets.

If it were a nice freezing day I woulld make sure I got a nice spray of water on the car and doused it top to bottom to make sure it's covered in a nice thick layer of ice.
I think a TV crew and the city need to have a new season of Parking Wars and call it Hydrant Wars. Start towing them and film the interactions at both the cars, and the impound lot. The city would make money twice over AND the city would be safer.

In my perfect "dream world" fire trucks would come equipped with arms like commercial dump trucks. They pull up to a blocked hydrant and put the arms out... lift the car up and over and dump it (preferably upside down) on the other side. Just drop it from like ten feet in the air on its roof.
You can always bust the windows out. I’ve seen it happen. And no the department didn’t have to pay for replacing the windows. Hazard of breaking the parking laws.
When the job is done, you still have to "Walk the Hose" before repack! If you don't do it, nobody else will! Firefighters work is never done! Some lady on the street said "Thanks Guys"! It's the little things!!! Thanks John - On The Job!! 2N2👍
4:30 an easier way to drain the water from hoses, during male-up. Get a breaker bar (steel bar, like a Halligan but without the pointy bits, you'll have something in your truck that will do this) and hold it at shoulder level, horizontal, under the hose. With one end anchored (held, or just the weight of the hose) walk away from the anchored end, with the hose going up over the bar. A LOT easier than doing it hand-over-hand, faster, less work. Love from Australia to the BEST FD in the world, FDNY.
The firefighters are supposed to break the windows to any cars blocking the hydrent. THEN they have some short extension hoses that go thru the car. The extension hoses all leak, filling the car with water. The NYCPD then have the car towed AFTER the fire truck leaves.
I won’t say it’s not an official member, but If you know the right people, anyone can get those department parking permits. I have a few friends of mine from other states that have the same thing in the FDNY version. Non members/buffs/photographers go into the city and park where they want, with the assumption that it will keep them from getting parking fines. Some times it works, sometimes it doesn’t.
Seems like something that could be solved technically... If the fire hydrant connections are made upward and a U-shaped hose is connected between them, it can be used from any direction.
i was a firefighter for 25 years, the last 12 s an assigned driver, and i prated to have some a**hole parked in front of a hydrant, and have the chief screaming for water. our department policy was to flush the hydrant before using it, maybe in my next life. stay safe out here guys. john
Why am I not surprised that a cop would park in front of a fire hydrant? I saw a cop car parked in a handicap spot in an almost empty parking lot. (The spot right next to where he parked was empty) There was no emergency other than the cop was sucking up to an attractive clerk. It's also not a surprise that cops and firefighters don't get along well. (Do cops get along well with anybody?)
I never had the pleasure, I did put a supply line over a hood. Smashed the hell out of it when I charged the line. The owner got irate so the PD then ticketed the car.
NYC has just never had good enforcement when it comes to illegal cars. Never understood that in my 27 years of living there. First you have a car with no plates, that is an automatic impound. Second a cop placard does not give you the right to park illegally, yet they all do. FDNY, you are so much nicer than I would have been if I had to get to that hydrant.
The most important position at a fire…..1st due Engine Chauffeur (ECC). And it’s not debatable if you’re on the job. This wasn’t much of a fire, but when there is…. The first arriving Engine company is the key to the entire operation. And it starts and ends with the ECC. His/her responsibilities are numerous, usually complicated in the first minutes on the scene. Numerous problems/obstacles are expected and you have to have the answers and quick! Imagine this was a big fire, middle of the night, people trapped, you get the picture. Lots of responsibility and pressure put on that 1st due ECC. It’s why it’s a “senior, experienced” firefighter that has that position. This small fire was a good drill for the members. In 2022….NEARLY EVERY HYDRANT is parked on in NYC meaning they are hard to find at night. Every second counts. Good job by all.
New viewer here. First time I saw this. I have a question even though I'm WAY late to the party. What is the life span of fire hoses? I see they are connected together to form the necessary length. I also see they are dragged on concrete, pavement etc... before being charged up for use, but then dragged again during stowing operations. That is all wear and tear on the hoses. So how many "Cycles" can a hose section last? I doubt I'll get a response as this vid was about 2yrs ago, but just curious.. Thanks! 😎
I once witnessed fireman move several cars on Wall Street that were preventing their trucks from passing. Several firemen went to one side of the cars and rocked them up and down until they were able to walk the cars over the curb and up to the sidewalk.
It's so funny when in between the two buildings there's an open lot where they can put parking and both sides of that road there's people parking good job
Do Fire trucks inthe USA not have an onboard tank of water to allow them to start trying to knock down the fire while they gt connected to the hydrants ? Fire trucks in the UK and Norway at least have onboard water tanks, and drums with hose that can be run out very quickly to allow initial fire suppresion, while the crew run out the larger bore hoses and connect to a water source to complete the job.
There are windshield size thank you signs that will take several hours or a phone call and pay for removing the sign off the windshield. Best type of education for those special folks above rules the rest will follow.
Are there bays marked in front of the hydrants, like lines on the road where you know not to park? Or is it a judgement thing trying to guess how far away from the hydrant you should be?
Some things just work. Did you know that a coal fired engine pump could flow over 1000GPM? Good stuff. Love the tradition, it's in my blood. If I had a penny for every stick I've thrown on my shoulder....hehe.

Again, you don't need to be there to form an opinion. Just know what the general rules are and you'll be set.
@@aserta In our country it is illegal to block any fire hydrant or park where it is posted "No Parking". But, there are always those people that think they are above the law and I think they should get the stiffest fines/penalties. Blocking fire hydrants delays the time to save lives.
Great video. Thank you. Fire hydrants must not mean anything to these people. Placard or not, there is a law. Too many people in NYC for me, but the NYFD has the most class of any fd in the country.
I miss this so much, the brotherhood, helping the public. Good work
Me too. Former captain. You never really retire. Impossible. A year ago I was among the first on scene in my neighborhood. It all comes back to training. Gave the chief a full report on conditions and resources needed. Will never forget his reaction.
Gotta love the fist bump and “good job buddy” 👍🏻
My hats off to city fire fighters. Suburb work this happens so much less. That's gotta just be aggravating daily knowing your water sources are blocked usually.
The only way to stop people from parking in front of the hydrants is to run the water lines thru their cars. And make sure the leaky part is inside.
That has happened
I have seen fire departments break through both passenger windows and run hose through car.👍
And they'll use their leakiest hose while they do it
That would need a weird explanatin in this case. I mean: I saw those videos and they've been right. But I don't understand the drama here.
@@Nagilum3 Internet tough guys trying to act edgy.
I understand why they do it but putting the hose under the car gets the same results.
That was a staged awareness stunt.
Thanks to all fireman, you have to have patients. Bravo, love you all.
your the best filmier in nyc you are documenting history with the fdny the different style of your vides make me watch them to the end every part of the video is different Great Job Man!
My son is a firefight. God bless you y’all from Texas!!
God bless, sir! I understand.
This one's too easy so, "no comment."
Some years ago in KALIFORNIA, a BMW had PARKED @ a hydrant, well they busted the 2 front windows, connected the hoses, but the short connector leaked into the car, so it was OVERFLOWING WATER ! Let me see him explain that to his INSURANCE ! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
I'm sure the insurance company has a history of firemen destroying cars for fun.
Had always wondered about the process of stowing hoses back on board and never thought about asking some firefighters I know. Loved seeing the process and the fact firefighters from different crews helped each other so that all trucks are ready for the next call. Keep up the great work and stay safe!
Wow, the fire fighters have a tremendous job from start to finish. I appreciate the video footage. Thanks so much!
I love watching them break windows and threading Lines through a car.
Y'all work so hard to save us. Thank you
This is just unacceptable, I don't care who or what they are.
It´s a matter of fines and immedialty been towed away, no matter who´s car it is....
I hope the cars got damaged and/or towed
@@RobertKorte1 Great idea. many people who park in Manhattan are coming in from out of state. Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Jersey & Delaware mostly. Ticket them if you want but there's little chance the City will get paid. A study this spring reported NYC has over $1B in unpaid traffic tickets.
@@arribaficationwineho32 Some folks would be thankful for some damage. Collect insurance & a check from NYC.
@@arribaficationwineho32why damage the cars on purpose? Yes they should be heavily fined and possible towed.
But if they were able to use the hydrant there is no justification to just damage the cars for fun. Then you are no better then the owners of the cars.
The folding of the hoses, amazing! Thank u for ur service! Thank u for sharing!
Yes.....excellent folding?
Can’t wait to get a new mayor Hopefully he’ll fix all these problems we have a New York City
Won't happen until you fix the stupidity of the voters. Voting for him the second time is like being a passenger on the SS Titanic and after the ship hits the iceberg, going up to the Captain and asking him to go around and hit it again. Many of the people in NYC have reaped what they have sowed.
Good luck with that Democrap.. i know I live in Cali

You stumbled upon a very rare old American classic muscle car, a 1970 Chevrolet Impala @ 7:55. I love those old American muscle cars.
That TEAM WORK MAKE DREAM WORK look like.
Break the windows and run the lines thru the car. Do it enough times and people won't park there anymore.
If it were a nice freezing day I woulld make sure I got a nice spray of water on the car and doused it top to bottom to make sure it's covered in a nice thick layer of ice.
Idc if its cop car r not dont park in front of hydrant
Excellent. Now I know what team work it takes to get the hose back on the truck. Thanks for sharing!!
Loved your slo-mo filming. Very talented filming and worthy subjects.
Thanks for the memories! USAF Firefighter 1975-1982.
Isn't that grey silver car also parked on a crossing as well ?
I think a TV crew and the city need to have a new season of Parking Wars and call it Hydrant Wars. Start towing them and film the interactions at both the cars, and the impound lot. The city would make money twice over AND the city would be safer.
Great job on this project! Your hard work and dedication really paid off. I am impressed by your attention to detail and your ability to see the bigger picture. Your work has truly made a positive impact and I can't wait to see what you do next. Keep up the fantastic work!
In my perfect "dream world" fire trucks would come equipped with arms like commercial dump trucks. They pull up to a blocked hydrant and put the arms out... lift the car up and over and dump it (preferably upside down) on the other side. Just drop it from like ten feet in the air on its roof.
They did not park ON the hydrant (would have caused serious damage to under carriage). They parked IN FRONT OF hydrant.
You can always bust the windows out. I’ve seen it happen. And no the department didn’t have to pay for replacing the windows. Hazard of breaking the parking laws.
I love those vids.
When the job is done, you still have to "Walk the Hose" before repack! If you don't do it, nobody else will! Firefighters work is never done! Some lady on the street said "Thanks Guys"! It's the little things!!! Thanks John - On The Job!! 2N2👍
Man itd be awsome to have that many people to pack up a job. 👍🏻
Wow was shocked to see that it was an NYPD member
I won’t say it’s not an official member, but If you know the right people, anyone can get those department parking permits.
I have a few friends of mine from other states that have the same thing in the FDNY version.
Non members/buffs/photographers go into the city and park where they want, with the assumption that it will keep them from getting parking fines.
Some times it works, sometimes it doesn’t.
wow ! what a work you have with packing the fire hoses.
Broadway & Madison Ave got nothin' on these studs. Truly, it doesn't take three full companies to rebed some 2-1/2".
Sadly this won’t be the last time this happens!
1:42 Maybe a strange question, but why don't they create a no-parking zone near a hydrant?
Seems like something that could be solved technically...
If the fire hydrant connections are made upward and a U-shaped hose is connected between them, it can be used from any direction.
Or, there could be a law that you cannot park a vehicle within 15' of a hydrant.
Excellent Catch ❤️🚒🚒🚒🚒🚒🚒🚒🚒🚒🚒🚒🚒🚒🚒🚒🚒🚒🚒🚒🚒🚒🚒🚒🚒🚒🚒🚒
Ya let's hear it for team work fire fighter's are the best
I'm from the UK and even I know that you don't park against a fire hydrant!
i was a firefighter for 25 years, the last 12 s an assigned driver, and i prated to have some a**hole parked in front of a hydrant, and have the chief screaming for water. our department policy was to flush the hydrant before using it, maybe in my next life. stay safe out here guys. john
thank you share the video
do a great job

to be able to wear the badge of the FDNY... how cool... same with Chicago... what an honor !!
Run hoses thru car and then after fire have pd come tow and ticket cth car

Why am I not surprised that a cop would park in front of a fire hydrant? I saw a cop car parked in a handicap spot in an almost empty parking lot. (The spot right next to where he parked was empty) There was no emergency other than the cop was sucking up to an attractive clerk. It's also not a surprise that cops and firefighters don't get along well. (Do cops get along well with anybody?)
2:42 Wow! I'm in love. Now have to find my man, book a venue, and hire a band. All y'all invited.
Oh damn that's on 107th st Between Lexington & Third Ave
WoW...I went to the former PS 107 on 105th & Lexington!
I am thinking the supply line from the hydrant was shall we say (*cough*) not routed correctly. 😉
Not routed correct and did not have a leaky coupling if you are thinking of the same route I am😉
I never had the pleasure, I did put a supply line over a hood. Smashed the hell out of it when I charged the line. The owner got irate so the PD then ticketed the car.
@@larry648 Ooo thats awesome! I would of loved to see the line dance around and smash the hell out of the hood👍
That big kink though
@@larry648: Play the stupid game. Win the stupid prize.
It appears that there is a fire hydrant directly across the street. Why wasn't it used?
That was a beautiful old red Chevy Impala parked there at the end.
No matter who it is, they should be ticketed, have the car impounded. That car is not a police car.
Forever the greatest Fire Fighters on the planet. Period! 343❤
In the town I live in, they put a blue road reflector in the center of the car lane to let the FD know where a hydrant's is located at.
New York’s Finest
Brothers and sisters protecting all who need it.
Still so sad to see the loss of so many on 9-11.
Very interesting. Hardly any resemblance at all to firefighting here in the UK. Send dedication to duty though. Excellent video production.
Thanks! 😎
What is the lifespan of cars that block hydrants?
I once witnessed fireman move several cars on Wall Street that were preventing their trucks from passing. Several firemen went to one side of the cars and rocked them up and down until they were able to walk the cars over the curb and up to the sidewalk.
Less lawsuits than using a cowcatcher.
Once you're done with the hydrant open the sucker wide open and let it flood both cars
When I came as a tourist I didn't know parking restrictions at hydrants.. And I've got a ticket. Now I know!
It's so funny when in between the two buildings there's an open lot where they can put parking and both sides of that road there's people parking good job
7:00 and followed is this a ritual to do this with all, bring the last feet tube into the truck?
After seeing what goes in to folding up those hoses, l have a lot more respect for fire fighters
Rule is 15 feet. There is some leeway but it’s very obvious when it’s less than 15.
I have a question...What size and how much hose is carried in each of the hosebeds on an FDNY engine?
4
Nice they roll up the hoses just like they did, over a hundred years ago. So much for innovation, in their defense fire probably burns the same.
Some things just work. Did you know that a coal fired engine pump could flow over 1000GPM? Good stuff. Love the tradition, it's in my blood.
If I had a penny for every stick I've thrown on my shoulder....hehe.
