Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992) is one of my all-time favorite Christmas movies! Also when I watch this film it makes me want to watch Aladdin (1992) because the second Home Alone film and Aladdin were released in the same year and month, but they were released a few days from each other.
Nobody had a Talkboy. It was invented for this movie, but of course then every kid wanted one, and there was a scramble to manufacture them and cash in.
“Sick” when said like that means GOOD, now. Who is that woman in the street, Supergirl? She laid out 2 grown men with just one punch each, without even saying anything.
This is essentially the exact same movie as the first with a skyline. "If it ain't broke don't fix it" and it's totally fine. The pigeon lady basically plays the mysterious scary stranger as old man Marley. The TalkBoy didn't even exist until this, then every kid wanted one for Christmas and it went into production. Tim Curry is such an amazing talent. This is when the series ends for me. Without Macaulay it's just about the money.
After the failed home invasions & toy store heist, the Wet/Sticky Bandits parted ways with Marv finding his true calling as a hyperactive Chicago Cubs pitching coach while Harry reconnected with his Chicago associates doing work as a mafia enforcer but met a sticky ending in an Illinois cornfield!
Good work, I've known the movie for what feels like an eternity, but it was only after your reaction that I recognized Ally Sheedy from the Breakfast Club in it.
I love how they portray Central Park to be small enough you could basically see Pigeon Lady from the hotel room. Also because of inflation, you guys guessed correctly, $967 in 1992 would be about $2,100 today.
It was dyed for just that role, by the way. And for the record, I met her myself last month in Providence, RI (along with Molly Ringwald - another Brat Pack icon).
Sheedy also appeared in WarGames / St. Elmo's Fire / Short Circuit / Maid to Order / Only the Lonely (another project of Columbus & the late Hughes, not long before HA2) / High Art.
Also, I've even managed to visit John Heard's* (Peter, the dad) grave in Ipswich, MA every year to pay my respects. *Also appeared in Cat People / C.H.U.D. / Big / Radio Flyer / The Client (TV series).
Once again proving his family are idiots. They know he has the credit cards and will need food and shelter... so they cancel the cards and report them stolen. That one act results in Kevin's paper money being taken by the concierge and losing his only guaranteed safe haven. Kevin's dad then has the absolute cheek to yell about a 1grand room service tab.... All while staying in the presidential suite (4k a night in 1992) they were given for free and surrounded by about 15 grand's worth of gifts.
The thing is, though, that Kevin ordered WAY more food (all dessert) than he could realistically eat; it would have been excessive even if he had ordered for his entire massive family.

Toppings 6 Custard Flan ($48.00) 1 Pastry Cart ($210.00) 8 Strawberry Tarts ($76.00) 36 Chocolate-Covered Strawberries ($47.00) Subtotal: $728.00 Tax and Gratuity: $239.43 Total: $967.43 From this, we can conclude that Strawberry Tarts are $9.50 ($20.79 in 2023) apiece and Custard Flans are $8.00 ($17.51 in 2023) apiece. We can also calculate that the chocolate cakes, chocolate mousse, and ice cream cumulatively cost $347.00. Assuming the chocolate mousse cost $9.50 apiece, six would cost $57.00, bringing the cakes and ice cream to $290.00. Looking the Plaza Hotel's current room service menu, we find that the current price of the "Home Alone Sundae" (yes, that's an actual menu item) is $350.00; this works out to $160.00 in 1992, leaving the chocolate cakes at $65.00 apiece ($142.00 in 2023). A single serving of chocolate cake at the Plaza currently costs $25, so if Kevin ordered two cakes intended to serve 6-8 people each, this would be about right. Figuring out the tax and gratuity was more of a challenge, since I haven't been able to find the total sales tax rate for NYC in 1992. The current rate totals to 8.875%; using that, the taxes come to $64.61, which suggests a gratuity rate of around 22%. However, a gratuity rate of 22% only brings the total to $966.98, so the tax rate might be slightly off. In any case, that's my breakdown of Kevin's room service bill.
