Kids do need a certain degree of autonomy. I was all over town as a kid. We'd bike everywhere, explore the woods, etc. From middle school on, I walked home from school and let myself in the house since my parents worked. If you're growing up in NYC, expect your kid to be everywhere... Once they get that metro card, it's hard to retain some type of control.
