Happy belated birthday, Al! That cake turned out AWESOME! For the first time in years I am going to attempt a garden this year. I plan to build a greenhouse and I am ordering my Camarosa berry plants this week. Those are my favorite strawberries. Then in the fall I plan to order root plants and grow them hydroponically. Now I have the perfect recipe to let them star in. I always watch your videos while still under warm covers in the morning. I have two nearly 9 month old kittens and they always like to lay on me while we watch you work. Nothing like baby animals to cuddle first thing in the morning! I lost my 28 year old son in 1999 and you and your beautiful family are my favorite surrogate children. Thank you for sharing your lives and fun times with all of us! Spring is in the air where I live! Trees are leafing out in that gorgious Spring green color that I love so much! Birds wake me every morning now with their songs of joy and thanksgiving to God for their morning worms. Oh, the circle of life! Stay blessed!

Al, A cake that needs its own barn! Can't believe your snow and ice. We've just had the hottest February day since records began! 20c in some parts of Scotland. 10.3c on the North wall in full shade today. All missing seeds are being resent by the retailers!! Happy Birthday! Thats the cake my son asks for every yr for his birthday :) Only small differences... I cover whole cake in whip cream when its done and pour strawberries in center and add couple strawberries on top and drizzle some juice over sides just for appearances. I usually use premade angel food cake but think your homemade cake would be better! Good to see greenhouse chickens starting to lay and Tanner out doing chores!

Here's a suggestion...before you pour the batter in the pan, make collars ( of parchment paper ) for the inside and outside of the pan sticking up higher than the pan and down to the bottom of the pan so the batter doesn't overflow it. You can also make a parchment bottom for the pan. the cake looks great.

a trick so that the yolks don't stick to the side of the measuring cup: pour your oil into the cup then put the yolks into the oil. then pour all of it into the liquid mixture. voila!

You should show Olivia the bottle trick for separating yolks from eggs. Just crack the whole egg into a bowl, then use a regular plastic bottle to 'suck' up the yolk into the bottle. Super simple and quick and effective.
My mom use to make me an Angelfood cake with strawberries and homemade whipped cream every year for my birthday. One year the oven was dead so she actually used our big bbq lol. It had a but of a funky grilled flavor but was still so good. Happy birthday!

Just sat here and watched all 2 hours of Justin's 🎥!! I wish you guys were in it more😕 It's an excellent film. I feel so empowered to dive into my garden this year! I hope to grow the bulk of our produce....to eat and store as well. I'm in a very VERY limited situation so far animals aren't an option.....yet. I'm planning and brain storming. Produce is a good place to start tho. Thanks for recommending it Al.....and for being a part of it.

When cracking eggs, it's better to hit them against the inside of the bowl than on the edge. Also, I love that you involve Olivia in nearly every project or activity. Good people!!!!
I love that dispenser tube, I have one myself and found many uses for it. Love how she says dont break it and momma just freezes and gives that look like "why would you say that while I am trying to pick it up?!" Lol.

Happy birthday Al. I just had mine 2/25. Dont count them anymore, getting closer you 70. Enjoy homesteading activitirs while you can-- never know the suprises your body can pull on you. Even if you are active one day the next day could be the start of a problem. Love to watch the cooking with all the family together. Spring and the increased light plod the new diet definitely increase your hens production. My hens are laying abour 12 a day.

Al, with that cake pan you can put something underneath it to pop up the sponge up a little and use the edges as a cutting guide.

Happy Birthday Al! An interesting technique to master at separating eggs. Crack open in one hand and split the shell dropping the yolk and white into your other hand over a dish. The white will run between your fingers leaving the yolk behind for a separate dish. Then grab another egg and repeat.

I so love your cooking segments. I've taken to cooking for myself. It's so hard as a single person, I hate eating the same thing time and time again. If it ends up in the fridge or freezer it tends to never be eaten. When it's soup (or liquidy), I've taken to canning my left overs, then I can revisit them weeks later. Trick for single people wanting to cook nutritious whole foods, keep a small pressure cooker close by.

Happy Birthday from New Mexico. Today outside around 75 degrees. No rain here in a long time. Had some snow for about half a day and melted. We live the southern part. Hot and windy. Two days ago we had 65 miles an hour gust. But don't want that much snow like you have. Love your cooking videos. If the recipe are listed I print them off.....love it all.

I use dental floss to cut my cakes along with tooth picks to stick in cake to keep it even
Happy Birthday, Al!!!! I have been watching you since the Rhodes came to see ya!. That cake is also the base of the tres leches cake. In a 10 x 15 pan, after you bake it you cover it with equal parts (1 cup each) canned milk, sweetened condensed milk, and whipping cream, pour it over the cake and let it soak in until you see no standing liquid and top with sweetened whipped cream!
Put the cake pan on a glass soda bottle to cool. Cools faster. Learned this for angel food cakes. Happy Birthday.

I agree Al! We got a little hobby farm and started raising our own food. It tastes so much better than store bought food. We raise pigs and have chickens for eggs. We were lucky to get a small barn with 4 stalls already set up in it. We got 2 sterile male goats to move around to eat the weeds and unwanted trees. It has been fun and delicious!

I think you mistook the whipped cream they made for icing. But I agree, I Also would've put whipped cream around the entire outside, as well as that hole in the center

@@lmanlymoats There is a link in the description for the recipe, Chiffon cake. The white stuff was probably more meringue than icing. Since the meringue was made with raw eggs, I'm not sure if they should have been tasting it. But maybe when you get the eggs from your own farm, you know they are OK.
