    Goooood Morning Al ,
    Ah , a poor day today . My best friend , Sweet Pea , died last evening . She was thirteen which is kind of old for a large dog . She always liked riding with me in the truck . Sweet Pea always did something odd when we went to a store . She sat on the passenger seat but when I came back out of the store she would be curled up in the driver's seat . Even though she had more room in the passenger seat . Nice in the winter time as she would keep my seat warm for me. Gosh , I am going to miss her .

      @donaldmiller8629 5 лет назад +4

      @Sissy Dewoody ,
      Thank you for your kind words. I have several good dogs . Sweet Pea was the best dog , no , the best friend I have ever had . I miss her .
      For a great memory , there was the time that she ran off. She returned a couple of hours later , herding two deer to our back yard. Not chasing them . Herding them ! She was so proud of herself. And then she was expecting me to put the deer into a pen.
      She went off like that another time and this time she brought back three does . So , I did some research and found out that Rottweilers originated in Italy. They were originally used as herding dogs by the Roman armies .

    What you pointed to is a Bush Bean stringless (not spreading)...the opposite would be a stringless Pole Bean (grows up a pole or structure). The "string" is off the side of each bean when you clean/chop them you can remove it, but when eaten it is tough. To avoid that "string" select stringless beans. Order depending on how you want to grow them, not spreading bush type, or pole type growing upwards on a pole or some sort of a structure (trellis)...both types can be stringless or with strings...so watch for that. Usually it's specified on the description, but sometimes the suppliers don't mention it, then it could be either or. With Peas it's the same situation...hope this helps.

    To answer your question Al about the egg...I attended the Mid-America Organic Association conference here in Kansas City on Friday where I met up with Off Grid with Doug & Stacy and Terry Durham (River Hills Harvest). I attended the Poultry 101 symposium with Stacy and in the symposium the speaker discussed how eggs were made. It was pretty interesting. So a chickens body temperature is 106° F and after the hen lays the egg they can range from 60-80°F. When the eggs cool that is when the little air pocket on the bottom, inside of the egg forms. Hope this helps. Stay warm!

Time to plug in the electric trough heater for the horses, stock up on hay and feed, harvest the rest of the garden. At least the mud will freeze! Always something to be thankful for. 😆

    Al, heads-ups a weather anomaly is occurring bringing Arctic temperatures, and wind chill you've not experienced in your life. Expect dangerous cold conditions to exist later this week. Very cold times mean taking a blanket along when driving with some quick and easy energy food/water, and maybe some weather appropriate footwear, gloves, parka, and bibs too for every member of your traveling party for safeties sake. Many will find comfort afforded by wearing a painters type paper dust mask preventing Arctic air from being breathed. Some form of goggles is recommended when temperatures or wind chill exceed -30°F in case you blink or squeeze eyes shut against blowing snow and your eyelids freeze together; no joke. And may God bless...

      In keeping with a NE heritage breed how about a Morgan? They can be trained for both light draft harness and saddle riding.
      A horse could move those larger and heavier hoop top style chicken tractors slow enough not to run over any chickens also.
      If they can find an old horse drawn mower and hay rake. It would be a green solution for working in the soggier areas of the reclaimed four acre pasture where the Kubota might get stuck.

    According to wikipedia a Snickerdoodle is of German origin or perhaps got its start in New England.The name is a corruption of the German word Schneckennudein which means snail dumpling. I guess it describes the snail like shape. There is also a series of tall tales about a hero named Snickerdoodle from the early 1900s which may be related to the name of the cookie. But who knows hey?

      Actually, a string of dough would have to be rolled around on a flat surface to look like a snail shell...the meaning is more likely to "schnick" some sugar onto the baked cookie and "schnick" means toss, i.e, sugar onto the finished cookie.

    Y'all are an amazing family. It's great to see everyone involved with everything. We do the same. We plan our garden ahead of time. We usually order from a catalog or go to the flea market or the local co-op and get seeds. Hopefully I can get our little garden tractor going where can cut the garden up soon.

    Burpless cucumbers - thank you! I love cucumbers but they made me burp, so I stopped eating them. One year, however, we grew some short, piggety ones, and they did not make me burp. I thought it was a coincidence, but as you said a burpless cucumber,, I want to thank you. This spring I will be growing it again! Thanks also for you lovely programs!

    Life on a homestead is so rewarding in so many ways. All that cold weather sure makes it harder, though. Being a southern girl, do not know how you deal with it. I am so thankful we have pretty mild winters. Snickerdoodles gotta help.

    That separation method is good for one egg. If you need more than 2 for cakes you can just use your freshly washed hands. Crack the egg and dump it in your hand letting the whites run between your fingers into a container underneath. Then you can just tip the yolk into the mixing bowl. Wash your hands and go from there. My son loved helping me bake and separate the eggs.

    Broccoli and cauliflower are both cool season plants down here in Texas. Also Brussels sprouts, cabbage and garlic. I have seen cabbage growing in snow. Enjoy!

    Carrots growing on your cooking compost are great. To high for carrot fly and the compost is light with no rocks! Try it!
    My favourite squash is delicate. Amazing
