    I firmly believe that AE is the benchmark for American style shoes at that price point. When companies like Thursday come out and offer quality footwear at a lower price, the “quality” they talk about is benchmarked against AE. Allen Edmonds are some big shoes to fill in this industry but I also believe that Thursday brought their own.

    My main complaint with Thursday is how bad the leather creases and ages. Goodyear welt is pointless if the leather wants to quit after 3 years. Their suede is a fairly good deal however.

      1 month in on my captains and they aren't creasing. At least more than you'd expect. I'm using shoe trees and I properly conditioned them when I first got them.
      I just watched a video that showed a pair of their chelseas after one year of wear and they didn't look great at all. I don't know if they are using better materials now, I don't know if that guy just didn't take care of them at all.

    So far, I have purchased 2 pairs of Thursday Boots dress shoes. I love them. You can feel the difference in the construction when you wear them. Coming from a guy who winces at shoes over $80. I have recently started asking, "What's spending more going to get me?". Thursdays are worth the extra money. I really take care of the uppers, and so far so good. Great comparison, and maybe one day I'll add some AE's to the rotation.

      After the break in they fit really nice. No pressure points. That cork bed once it forms to your foot is nice. Definitely do the show trees. They still smell like new leather with no sweaty foot oder. These shoes (in large part due to the heel) really feel like the foundation of what you are wearing. I feel like I'm getting the support I need.

    Just bought a Thursday "New" Statesman, they are Blake NOT Goodyear, and the tread is a Vibram-esque lug instead of the original Dainite-esque stud. The original Statesman is still available and billed as "Classic Collection", they do have some styling differences and come in a different pallet of colors. The New are stamped Handcrafted in Portugal (I think they have been mostly Mexico before?), the insole is glued in and it is leather over foam. Still full grain leather uppers with glove leather lining, and the heel counter is rough out. The web description says it still has a cork footbed.

    That "drop" does happen with the Thursday's. I own 4 pairs of their boots and 1 of their shoes and I own 29 pairs of AE'S. Thursday's do decline in comfort a little bit whereas my AE'S have just gotten more comfortable. Another thing about Thursday's is the heel block is quite bulky/large and high of the ground compared to the AE'S. I have the AE Liverpool chelsea and all 3 types of Thursday Chelsea boots and the AE is MUCH better in looks and quality but I like the Thursday's too. The nice thing about Thursday's is they offer a lot of different colors and materials for each model.. Thursday's are great for the price though and I would recommend them. I would go for AE seconds, firsts or Aldens if you can afford them over Thursday's shoes.

  • @ipgvids
    @ipgvids 5 лет назад +2

    You didn't mention the biggest difference between the two: AEs are available in various widths; Thursdays come in only one width. Even though the Thursdays are much cheaper than the AEs, I still do not see the point in paying Thursdays prices for shoes that probably won't fit. If I am going to spend a lot of money on a shoe (whether AE prices or Thursday prices), I expect it to fit both the length and width of my foot.

    I have purchased two pair of Allen Edmonds' 2nds for just over $200 each. 2nds are regularly available. They just ran an additional 30% off, so one pair was $170! They were both awesome shoes with very little, hard to see imperfections. Actually what they call imperfections, is normal on lesser brands shoes anyhow. They have sales throughout the year. I wouldn't pay full price for Allen Edmonds, around $400 I'd get TLB Mallorca or Vass, but close to $200, the 2nds can't be beat.

    I have owned a few thursdays. With a price point of $200 and avg resole costing $160 for Dainite, I have to wonder if they are worth paying to get them re-soled? You could sell your used Captain for $40-100 and buy a new Captain with a little more cash. My Cavaliers lasted me 3 yrs with even heavy wear, which is awesome. But the suede has loosened up enough that its a bit shapeless and loose. The poron comfort pad is still cushy, but not as cushy when new. For $200 great shoes and boots. Just not sure about the roi on recrafting them at a $160-200+ investment.

    first pair of allen edmonds shoes I bought for work (business casual), I wore for 3 years before they were actually worn out. This is a layman non-shoe fanatic, wear it until it's done.
    After that, I bought a few pairs to rotate (to the displeasure of my wife, who thinks things get stale with time) and while many of the soles have worn a lot, all are wearable. 9 years later.
    For people who can't afford allen edmonds, there are a lot of people with a lot more money than you who want to dump their shoes on ebay and you can get little worn or reconstructed pairs for half to about an eighth of new price. Take advantage of the fact that people will buy shoes for $400 and wear them 5 times and change their minds and sell them for $100 or whatever, just like you or I would with $50 shoes we found didn't come to the top of the rotation.
    AE's shoes are like stepping back in time. they're comfortable, they're not light weight foamy fast wearing stuff and nothing just comes loose at random like what happens with $100-$150 mall store shoes.

    One reason to go with allen edmonds is recrafting. It doesn’t matter if you bought them on ebay or seconds. It doesn’t if you have leather or dainate sole. They will recraft them and you know it will be done right by the same company who built the shoes. With Thursday they don’t have this option and only recommend you a very limited list of cobblers that have work with their shoes before. Only in a few states and that’s not good enough.

    Not a great video from a shoe buyer's perspective. It came off more as a plug for Thursday Boots as an alternative to the "new" Allen Edmonds. What is the real, qualitive difference in the upper leathers? Does Thursday Boots use corrected leather, bonded, full grain or calf as opposed to AE using "French" and/or "Italian" leather?

    I wish comparison videos between allen edmonds and x brand use realistic pricepoints for comparison. No one out here be paying $425 for a pair of allen edmonds shoes. Given that most AEs (shoes, not boots) are bought around the 200-250 dollar pricepoint no one making a decent comparison video should seriously say AEs cost double of what Thursdays cost.

    • @Todd.T
      @Todd.T 4 года назад +3

      They are talking about AE in general, not just the ones in the video. There are different leather qualities and AE usually uses full grain leather while others use corrected grain leather. With full grain, if you look closely you can see follicles.
      Full grain is way less prone to permanent creasing or wrinkling. Full grain and its follicles are "open" and will accept moisturizers/conditioners, dyes and waxes. Over time, full grain can develop a patina and depth from multiple polishing sessions. There is a higher cost to full grain as if the animal's skin gets damaged (insect bites, animal bites, scratches against a fence), it cannot be used or you will see the damage.
      Corrected grain leather has been sanded to remove imperfections, such as the damages mentioned above. Then a grain pattern is pressed onto the leather where a natural pattern once was before it was sanded off. This effectively seals the leather and the shoe will not easily accept moisturizers dye or waxes, treatments just sit on top of the leather. I have 2 pairs of corrected grain shoes. These are from Magnanni and have a very high quality corrected grain leather. The still wrinkle way more than full grain shoes and cannot be shined past the point of when they were new. I use Saphir, Burgol, La Cordonnerie Anglaise and Collonil. These are the best waxes and polishes you can buy and you still can't really shine corrected grain leather. Full grain AE shoes will produce an insane shine from the mild waxes found in a good conditioner like Saphir renovateur.
      Full grain is more supple than corrected grain leather. There will be varying degrees of quality for both full and corrected grain leathers as well.

    Brown and Chocolate: best quality; equal to that of AE. However, this cannot be considered a praise since AE has lost their quality nowadays...
    Mahogany: Second grade; color variation is somewhat disappointing and the whole mahogany effect is less than ideal. Passable.
