I hope you all realize that this song came long before 'Silicon Valley.' The first recorded version was released in 1965 by a group called The Changin' Times, but it barely cracked the Top 100. In 1966 it was covered by the British singer, Crispian St. Peters, and it reached #4. Del's version came after that. And that is why - as Dixon Kimani says - it has a catchy old school hook...
I love Del Shannon how could anyone not "Charles Westover" had a ton of rocking hits...popular songs like Runaway ..Little Town Flirt...I'll Follow The Sun...Hats Off To Larry...then others like The Swiss Maid...From Me To You...Liar....Drop Down & Get Me. Yes...Del drove me wild with his great high notes accompanied by Max Crook on the keys..and guitar mastery from Al Caiola. Here he did a passable version of The Pied Piper (which I didn't realize that it was based on a very grim possible event.) We like to think of a Pied Piper as a joyful dancing character. I myself, up in Toronto Canada...was like most CHUM radio listeners were...Really Knocked Out with this new attacking tune. I'm not sure but, I think that, all recordings of this song by Crispian St. Peters start with a low quiet volume...then when he sings..."so follow me" it's low...but, then the volume goes up quite a few decibels on "hey c'mon babe..follow me". Let me know ...if you have a copy..Thanks. Another song that purposely raises the volume in the song is..."Something's Burning" by The First Edition. Thank You
It's a great song because Del Shannon covered material from other performers whether it was just an album cover. He could sing just about everything if he liked a song he was going to cover it. He tried to keep his head above water and he was looking for the next Runaway or the next song that would go to # 1. What I admired about the man he never gave up.
@koleekonkong ...Del's cover of "The Pied Piper" appears on a British CD "This Is My Bag" / "Total Commitment" (BGO CD307) released in 1996. This CD is still in print and is available from Amazon or CD Universe. The two albums were originally released in 1966.
Stephen--thanks--this is a rare find. I always think only of the super hit by Crispian St. Peters. It was a transistor radio fav of mine in the mid-'60's
Memories of my life are equated to the music I was listening to at the time. This song brought back great memories even if Del wasn't the original artist. I always loved his music too.
Could it be that Crispian St Peters based his cover on Dells version instead of We Five? This features the heavier beat and stronger, deeper singing that's St Peters big force.
As an admirer of Del Shannon's I really screwed up by not going to see him at a local concert in 1987. We always think these folks will be around forever, and Shannon seemed like an intense guy 25 years after his career took off--the candle burned too bright.
I saw Del Shannon do a gig at the Fresno Fair's Paul Paul Amphitheater on October 17, 1982 (my 23rd birthday), performing some of his greatest hits, (including his 1961 signature hit, "Runaway". He was one of the featured stars (along with The Coasters and Freddie "Boom-Boom" Cannon) at the Dick Clark Rock-N-Roll Revue (hosted by Dick Clark) This is a very good cover and just as good as Crispian St. Peter's original. R.I.P. Del Shannon(1934-1990) and Crispian St. Peters(1939-2010).
it brought back some old memories but, God, he just had no voice. How blind we were in our youth, however, it is better than any of the crap they sing today.
Thanks for posting this fabulous version. Now, I ove all 3 versions of the song. Crispian St. Peters, Del Shannon & Cher!!! But this made my day! ❤❤❤❤❤
I prefer Crispian St. Peters version by a smidgen. But this is damn good. Nice to hear this song performed so differently, yet so well. I really enjoyed this.
@@cornelius627 I did not know that. Unfortunately, unless the original hits the charts in the States the chances of it being internationally known is slim. I hope they got a good cut of the royalties.
Was written by Artie Kornfeld (Sole creator of Woodstock 69) Original was the Changing Times. It has been cover by Cher and many more as well. I was with Artei when he received and award for the VP of BMI. as of July 2017 the song has been played 2 million times. 1 million played continuous would take 6 years.
@drkwolf311 From ur 8track,seriously too cool!Thank you,gd sir!God bless you and keep you and give you His love; God prosper your labor with help from above. Be His strength in your arm and His love in your soul, His smile your reward and His glory your goal.
I rarely post negative comments on you tube, but here I must make an exception. I remember when this song was a hit (of which this seems to be a cover). One of the dumbest songs ever written. Worse even than Duke of Earl (which I remember one of the older guys in the HS locker room remarking back in 1961 probably took all of 2 minutes to write).
As a teenager I liked most of Del's songs, but this version of a classic Ian & Sylvia/We Five & Crispian St. Peters song is really dreadful. His singing is off key & his voice is rough. Very sad, but thanks for posting this rather rare recording.
I'm going to start taking an anti depressant drug tomorrow called celexa and one of the side effects before it starts working is suicidal thoughts. Hope I don't end up like one of our favorite entertainers!
Brilliant. But then I never expect anything less from Del. Such an amazing talent. So sad we lost him so early.

Absolutely it's a classic. Just watched all the "Silicon Valley" episodes. Crispian's version was a big hit in US.
@@tw364The song is based on a tale from Hamlin and 130 kids that disappeared, and is kinda Grimm.

What a voice.
Never really got the recognition he deserved.
A true great rock and roll artist
Agree 100%
Excellent! I'm surprised there hasn't been a movie made about del yet. His life was so interesting yet haunting
Saw him at the oc fairgrounds in the early 80s. Great show
I was just thinking that today...Why has there never been a movie made of Del's life????.
One of our many brilliant singers ever.!!!!!!!
Very Cool version of this great tune , very Enjoyable!
I met Dell near the end of his life...A great talent...but tormented by demons within. Depression is a terrible thing...I now know how horrible.
Beautifully said. Both artists had their merits. One can enjoy both-I certainly do.
you can clearly hear the sound of the vinyl needle on the record, what a wonderful piece of art. Thank you for sharing!
OMG, if only my original bff from Miami (c.) 1965 could hear this.........what memories!!

He never sang a bad song he was great in his day or dell Shanon
of course the first one should be RUNAWAY, the great classic, and my favourite one ^^
ps: WHY CANT WE HAVE GOOD MUSIC AS THEY HAD THOSE TIMES
Can they change the Silicon Valley theme to this song with Dinesh singing that would be hilarious!!
Silicon Valley just brought this song to the forefront.
Yep, I only searched for this track after watching Silicon Valley S03E08. Still, it has a catchy old-school hook
I think silicon valley version is different
same for me, just searched for the song after the s03e08 of Silicon valley
nice song btw :p
Dixou
I listen to it all the time after watching Silicon.
Indeed! R.I.P. Del ♪♫
What a beautiful baritone he had-so sonorous and true.
Crispian St. Peters put this song on the map, Del's version is the biz he makes the song his what a giant amongst his peers he is.

Del also did a great cover of Roy Orbison's crying.
Gianni Pettenati made a cover of this song with the name of "Bandiera Gialla"
soo great....
That's just an awesome song, my favorite song of all time for sure!
I like that he´s singing about Bagpiping and there is a Flute in the Backround :D no serious I love this songBearbeiten | Entfernen
