BACKSTORY: "The Pied Piper" is a pop song written by the duo The Changin' Times consisting of Steve Duboff and Artie Kornfeld, who first recorded it in 1965, their version reached #87 on the Billboard Hot 100. However when British pop singer Crispian St. Peters recorded it he scored a major hit with the single during the summer of 1966 when it went to #4 in the United States, #5 in the United Kingdom, and #1 in Canada.

Great tune I first hearcwhen I was about 9 or 10 ! Im 65 years old ! My birthday is April 22nd 1956 so it all depends when it came out in 1966 or 1965 ! I have always loved this song since I was a kid love 60s music and my older sister who was 14 or 15 at the time had this 45 RPM record ! Shed be 72 years old by now ! Have a great day !

in 1218, a strange man walked into the town of Hamelin
On the surface, this song seems innocent. But underneath the surface, this is a very dark and disturbing song. The Pied Piper of Hamlin got the children of Hamlin to follow him, through the music of his flute, into the the mountains and they were never seen again. For many years, the people of Hamlin grieved over the loss of their children. So when the character who sings this song says, "Trust in me. I'm the Pied Piper," it has the opposite meaning, because the Pied Piper should not be trusted, especially with children. On a larger scale, isn't this what happened to the 60s generation? Many of them were lured by the great music of the 60s into drug use. Judging by the prevalence of drug addiction and drug overdoses in our society, one might say that many have been lost to drug addiction. The author of this song, Artie Kornfeld, was one of the organizers of the Woodstock music festival, where drugs were openly promoted. Artie thus played the role of The Pied Piper.
Ah Poetry, So Great, So Symbolic, So MANY different possible meanings. You make some great interpretations. Or, Perhaps, the 60's authors had something in mind other than drugs, Perhaps - it's a "Protest Song"...
A comment on how we should be Distrustful of "The Establishment" Perhaps - WE are the gullible children who will be lead astray by society and disappear forever. Or Perhaps - it's about Young People being lead into Vietnam, NEVER to be seen again...???

I am sure that there are many other interpretations of the song, "The Pied Piper," that one can make regarding exactly who and who should not be trusted. One must always look into everything with an open mind and a discerning eye, but always be open to new interpretations, based on new evidence. However, I think that it's safe to say that those of us who lived through the 60s were not aware of what was really happening on many different levels regarding a great many things. In this regard, there is a song by The Beatles called "Paperback Writer," which was released in 1966, a year after this version of "The Pied Piper" came out. In parts of "Paperback Writer," The Beatles are singing the words "Frere Jacques" in the background. "Frere Jacques" is a children's French song and the next words of that song can be translated as, "Are you sleeping?" By singing the words, "Frere Jacques," in the background, were not The Beatles really calling out to us and telling us to wake up? The next words of the song, "Frere Jacques," can be translated as, "Ring the morning bells," or in other words, wake up others. Therefore, perhaps one meaning of "Paperback Writer" is that we should wake up to what's really going on and then wake up others. At the time, all of this stuff regarding both songs, "The Pied Piper" and "Paperback Writer," went right over my head. But I was just a kid at the time and perhaps should not have been expected to pick up on the messages of these two songs, because my powers of discernment were not as developed back then as they are now.

I went to him in York in 1967 with my then girlfriend - Rosamund Lower - all perfectly innocent as I recall.
There may be truth in all the explanations I read here. For me, it's a really good song that I enjoy listening to. So, with me, if it sounds good, I'm going to listen to it, regardless of the meanings behind it.
