"Crom, I have never prayed to you before. I have no tongue for it. No one, not even you, will remember if we were good men or bad. Why we fought, or why we died. All that matters is that two stood against many. That's what's important! Valor pleases you, Crom... so grant me one request. Grant me revenge! And if you do not listen, then the HELL with you!"

Fun fact... the original cut of this was nearly 3 hrs long and contained loads of more violent scenes and fights. It was a proper proper 18 rated movie. For the last 2 years I’ve been trying to find the footage to put together a special Millius cut to be released as a 45th anniversary and a documentary. I have some interesting people on board but the footage is thought to be lost. But last year just before the pandemic I got intouch with a guy who had in his possession several cans of original film that hadn’t been opened for 40 years. This could contain the missing footage. I’m hoping that people would be interested in seeing this new cut and documentary. If anyone in interested in this project leave a comment. Watch this space.

My favorite Conan scene from Howard's stories are when Conan is crucified, and the leader of a band of thieves lowers the cross to the ground and gives Conan the chance to live IF Conan frees himself (with nails through his hands and feet). Conan does free himself, and I always wondered if that didn't reflect the agnostic Howard's view of Christianity: Jesus died on the cross but Conan wasn't going to die for anybody. Conan was a Nietzschean superman with a will to power, although I strongly doubt Howard ever read Nietzsche. People get Howard's Conan confused with the Conan portrayed in films: Howard's Conan is a good-natured rogue, a man's man and a ladies' man who is bold, cunning, and sometime chivalrous, feared and respected by his enemies, not the brooding stoic portrayed by Schwarzenegger. I love both Conans, but Howard's Conan is smarter and more ambitious than the film version. Conan rose to be king of Aquilonia in Howard's stories, although he was dethroned by a sorcerer's plot and had to use his wits more than his muscles to defeat his opponent.
I'd love to see Queen of the Black Coast brought to the screen (the story where Conan finally meets a woman he considers his equal, the pirate queen Belit). It's a riproaring good tale.

I think you are reading too much into it. Conan isnt Nietzchean at all. Conan DOES believe in gods, he just doesn't have much use for them, but he is careful not to cross them either. And Mitra( the god closest to Christianity) is shown to in fact help people whose faith is strong, but also who help themselves. Mitra leads a princess to Conan, and tells her to make him her general, which she does, and she defeats a Set worshipping sorcerer by doing so. BTW.....SET IS INTO SNAKES!!! DOES THAT REMIND YOU OF ANYONE??? Could it be Satan? The main thing Howard believes, I think. God helps those who help themselves. Remember what Conan says; Crom gives a man every thing he needs; strong arm, brains, and the rest is up to you.

Interestingly at this time a tribe of them sailed all the way to Wales and Ireland; hence Cymru. Scythia eventually drove them into east central Anatolia and the Danube River basin. In the sequel that he did with Wilt Chamberlain, the script called for Wilt's character to pick up Arnold by the throat with one hand , and shove him above his head into the wall. They were rigging the stunt, and Wilt came up and told them it all wasn't necessary. He told Arnold he was going to grab him by the throat and that Arnold should hold onto Wilt's hand like he was doing chin ups. Wilt then lifted him , with one hand over his head and placed him against the wall while the crew watched in shock. Wilt could bench a bit over 600lbs!!!! Arnold was nothing LOL.

You forgot that there's technically a Conan 3 movie with Arnold Schwarzenegger that has been made . It was "Red Sonja" or in some other countries named as "Kalidor : The Legend of the Talisman" ( in french Kalidor la Légende du Talisman ) the character that Arnie played in the movie Red Sonja is technically Conan but for some flaws and copyright reasons from Warner Bros the name changed to Kalidor thats the real story about it .
There should have been 5 Conan movies with Arnold Schwarzenegger but it got cancelled .
The 2011 remake/reboot offered nothing new on the table and took too much liberties from the source material as the movie looked too similar to movies that aired around that era ( Scorpion King sequels , Clash of Titans remake , etc...) the actor was badly chosen as the use of make-up on him/his character was laughable and ridiculous .
The 90's tv-show from Conan was only a rip-off from Hercules tv-show starring Kevin Sorbo who also played in the movie "Kull" and later on Xena : The Warrior Princess starring Lucy Lawless which is the female version of Hercules since it has the exact similar built up episodes , effects and such .
Conan the Barbarian is for sure a cult classic and holds pretty well today whereas the sequel Conan the Destroyed might be lesser appreciated by hardcore fans but it has still great moments and some excellent actors/actresses as the effects were great there's some homage to Ray Harryhausen in that movie with the Ice Castle .
Not to forget that some video games were inspirated by Conan such as Golden Axe and Sword of Sodan for example .
Dunno what Netflix will make from it but if it will look similar to a Games of Thrones-like i will pass . As i hope they will use some practical effects instead to go full lazy-CGI which really get on my nerves .

Like, on bookshelf? No. I have two or three, but they are not written by Russian authors. But I've read "Russian Conan" in school. My classmate had like 100 books from Star Wars and Conan series (back then books was CHEAP in Russia). Russian Wikipedia (ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/Конан#Другие_литераторы) states that there are about 127 novels in "bootleg" series, but I know that at least some books from that list are actually "real" ones written by western authors. But I do believe that majority of that list are indeed was written by Russian authors under "western" pen names. So, as I said, back in school I've read about 50 books from that series. Some books contained more than one novel, so I think I've read about 70-80 of the novels from the list. I don't know why do you think it's fascinating :D Most of those books was unremarkable at best. Some was just weird. I still remember "Конан и дар Митры" (Conan and the gift of the Mithra) by Michael Manson (Mikhail Akhmanov) in which Conan became some druid/Jedi hybrid. Some other authors tried to turn low fantasy of the Conan stories into high fantasy of Tolkien and so on. I don't remember much of those books. For authors, it was just money making. Some of them became quite popular, but because of their one's original books, not because of their involvement in Conan series.
Sorry for my English. And if you have some questions, I'll try to answer them.

I... liked the 97 series. While it's characterization of Conan was COMPLETELY wrong, and it's storylines where campy 90s shlock, the attention to detail with set design show that the people who made it were still passionate about portraying Howard's vision accurately. Some of the set designs were even borrowed (very effectively) for the MMO, Age of Conan. Also, as a whole, like the other popular shows along the same lines at the time (Xena and Hercules), the Conan show was just plain fun to watch. You just had to turn your brain off for a bit and enjoy the sheer ridiculousness of it.

you're not alone. I just found the whole series on Tubi and had a lot of fun watching it. Like you say, you just have to turn your brain off and enjoy it for what it is.
