That was one of the most gripping things about Howards' work. The Hyborian Age was entirely plausible. It made you wonder if he was Imagining his work, or channeling a forgotten History.
I read somewhere the setting for Conan's stories was supposed to be in a forgotten Ice Age, but Robert didn't have the resources at the time to study the era enough to make it plausible, so he settled on a kind of high middle ages instead, but I still think it worked.
I can't remember where I read this, but I originally heard Howard's three "states" of culture were described as Barbarism, Civilization, and Decadence. In cultures in the Barbarism stage, life can be nasty, brutish, and short, but its members also tend to be the most vigorous and daring. Cultures in the Decadence stage may have the most luxury and stability, but tend to slide ever deeper into stagnant, arrogant, apathy- until they become easy pickings for someone (like say, a Barbarian) who doesn't care about their "rules" and is strong enough to get away with it. Civilization is the most desirable state, where plenty of the old Barbarian energy remains, but it is now governed by reason and morality. The problem with Civilization is that can never seem to escape the trend of "Strong men create good times, good times create weak men" and it eventually slides into Decadence. Civilization defeats Barbarism, Barbarism defeats Decadence, Decadence defeats Civilization. Conan, as a super-barbarian wandering an utterly decadent Hyborian world, is basically a human "rock", while everyone around him is "scissors".
This is definitely the core of Howard's philosophy! He definitely loved playing with the idea that societies become too decadent then need some barbarians to bring things back down to what he believes the way things should be. His famous quote says it best “Barbarism is the natural state of mankind. Civilization is unnatural. It is a whim of circumstance. And barbarism must always ultimately triumph.” - Robert E. Howard
@conanthebarbarianofficial I greatly respect Mr Howard, but I MUST disagree. It is by keeping Animal-Man and Thinking-Man in balance, within every human being, every society, that we can have the greatest collective achievements. The hyper-barbarians are unique, solitary creatures, Nietzschean OverMen. It is a good path for individual superior men, but not achievable or practical for most. For the majority, you need good values to take root, in order to extend the lifespan of Civilization, keep Decadence at bay for as long as possible, and prevent Barbarism from ruining too much, when its turn comes.

@conanthebarbarianofficial I know this is a Conan channel, but it will be cool to have a video about the lesser known characters from Robert E Howard. Also, I recently found out that there are 2 Red Sonya/Sonja characters one from Robert E Howard that is based around the XVI century and the other from Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor Smith which I believe is the one that have adventures and crossovers with Conan, is that correct?
@@JorgeCastillo-uc7ekThat is correct. Howard's character Red Sonya of Rogatino appeared the story "Shadow of the Vulture" in 1934, a historical adventure set during the 1529 siege of Vienna. Roy Thomas converted that story into a Conan story in CtB issues 23-24, changing her name to Red Sonja and making her Hyrkanian. The rest is history!
If you're not aware already look up Doggerland. That's when Europe had more land mass, before the UK became islands. The UK used to be directly connected to mainland Europe and also Norway. The North Sea and the English channel were once above water. That was less than 10,000 years ago. There's a great map out there somewhere that shows the real Doggerland, but also includes the fictional locations of the Conan universe. It's really cool.
I seem to remember Odin is either not even born yet, or he's still very young. That would actually be pretty cool. A lot of people don't know that the Frost Giants/Ymir are walking around Asgard by the time Conan is King.
Used to be an anthology series called Heroes in Hell, one bit had R.E.H. with H.P. Lovecraft run into Gilgamesh. There after Howard's and Lovecraft's conversation struck a less than flattering recollection in Gilgamesh. A video suggestion... how about one about just how big were Conan's brains. Grown ass man wandering for a couple decades all over a giant continent yet somehow always managing to master enough of the local language to get by well enough even though those prime learning years were long past. Talk about a polyglot...
I love to point out to people that the very first scene in which Conan appears in "The Phoenix on the Sword", he is not holding a sword or an axe, but rather a stylus.

Great video, not many that has such knowledge about the Kull and Conan franchise(s) today. One thing about the Atlanteans is how could they remember their oral history about their ancestors (Referred to as the Giants by the Cimerians) if they had regressed so far?!?!
I think Robert E Howard’s place in Texas, on the edge of wildernesses but within a new civilisation establishing itself in a wild land must have given him immense inspiration, but only interpreted by his visionary soul! Thrilling video! Perhaps you could do some biographies of the major and minor characters!
As of now, to prepare for Battle of the Blackstone we have lore videos in the works for Solomon Kane, Dark Agnes, El Borak, Conrad & Kirowan, Bran Mak Morn, Kull & Brule, and Thulsa doom!
'Between the time when the oceans drank Atlantis, and the rise of the sons of Aryas, there was an age undreamed of...' “Barbarism is the natural state of mankind. Civilization is unnatural. It is a whim of circumstance. And barbarism must always ultimately triumph.” -Conan - "Beyond the Black River" - Robert E. Howard
This is a misquote, Conan did not say that line, rather instead that was said by the as I recall unnamed wounded soldier Conan was drinking with at the end of the story.
@@Daimon-X No, I'm staring at the book right now, and it's the woodsman who says it, to parrot the line 1:1 - "Barbarism is the natural state of mankind," the borderer said, still staring soberly at the Cimmerian. "Civilization is unnatural. It is a whim of circumstance. And barbarism must always ultimately triumph."
Even if i know almost all of them, I would like another video on each hyborian realm/region. Howard work always feel so fresh in is simplicity, yet diversified. Much better than the more pulp overexaggeration of Clark Ashton Smith and the likes.
The short stories make it feel like a world where the supernatural is possible. Games and comics make it feel like it's a world where the supernatural is force-fed into every square meter of the world.
I wonder if Howard was aware of the theory of continental drift? The theory was proposed around the time when Howard was still alive. His stories and history certainly point to a time when all the continents were connected (Pangea). We now know that Pangea would have predated the earliest human civilization, heck, it predated humans.
I was looking for a video like this a week ago, somehow I didn't see it till now. But I did find a guy who thought that the Conan stories were real, and that art deco buildings and star shaped forts were from a "lost civilization" prior to our. Thanks for not being a nut job.
it's based on the preflood world just like tolkein's work. they were both masons who had access to ancient information about the true history of the world. stygia = scythia, cimmerian = sumerian, etc.
The second cataclysm sounds like the younger dryas theory. While Howard took inspiration from ancient stories of such events happening in so many different cultures, it makes me wonder if it was just inspiration or something deeper. Like a DNA memory of what happened (if it did) and that's why he was able to craft such a detailed world. Same with Tolkien. Food for thought.
@@conanthebarbarianofficial That was actually the first video from this channel I watched! I feel like those authors and just other people who create such in depth media or ideas like some classical composers, Tesla etc are able to do this via some ancient memories encoded in our DNA. Especially this topic of pre history civilization. And we have archeological sites like Gobekli Tepe that further support or at least make you question if it's a possibility.
Yep, the Younger Dryas had been discovered in the early 1900s and almost immediately there were people (especially in occult and esoteric circles) speculating about lost civilizations during the warm interglacial between the end of the last real ice age and the brief freeze of the Younger Dryas. Howard likely got the idea from one of these sources.
Heroic Signatures commissioned the talented FRANCESCA BAERALD to bring fresh detailed life to the Hyborian Age and Thurian Age. The Hyborian Age map can be purchased in our online store (link in description).
That was one of the most gripping things about Howards' work. The Hyborian Age was entirely plausible. It made you wonder if he was Imagining his work, or channeling a forgotten History.

Thanks!
Thank you!
thanks for the overview
'Between the time when the oceans drank Atlantis, and the rise of the sons of Aryas, there was an age undreamed of...'
“Barbarism is the natural state of mankind.
@@akakios7386 It was Conan, he said to a woodsman after the battle for the Conjahora fort(Can't remember the name)
@@akakios7386Okey dokey. It was some time ago i read It.
Awesome 🤘🍻🤘
Cheers! May your goblet ever be full.
If I remember correctly, HP Lovecrafts at the mountains of madness takes place in some remains after the Hyborean age.
Howard, Lovecraft, and Clark Ashton Smith were pen pals and often referenced each others creations.
@@conanthebarbarianofficial I know, just finished H.P. Lovecraft, The Complete Omnibus Collection. Was a lot about their friendship there.
Even if i know almost all of them, I would like another video on each hyborian realm/region. Howard work always feel so fresh in is simplicity, yet diversified. Much better than the more pulp overexaggeration of Clark Ashton Smith and the likes.
Planning on it!
By Crom, you've slaked my thirst for bloodsoaked tales.
Much more upon the horizon!
Great content, keep it coming.
More to come!
We now know that Pangea would have predated the earliest human civilization, heck, it predated humans.
great video man
Aye, the thrill of adventure is always welcome! What other tales or quests shall we speak of?
I was looking for a video like this a week ago, somehow I didn't see it till now. But I did find a guy who thought that the Conan stories were real, and that art deco buildings and star shaped forts were from a "lost civilization" prior to our. Thanks for not being a nut job.
I'm 20% Nut Job, but thanks! Cheers!
@@conanthebarbarianofficial A healthy amount of nut job though.
"Picts? Oh, it's STILL ON SIGHT!"--Conan
it's based on the preflood world just like tolkein's work. they were both masons who had access to ancient information about the true history of the world. stygia = scythia, cimmerian = sumerian, etc.
It is definitely inspiration. Check out our interview with Jeff Shanks and he talks about exactly that!
Howard likely got the idea from one of these sources.

no, it isn't. This is pure fantasy...not that I don't like it, but don't confuse it with some sort of reality.
