CARAVAN CHALLENGES WHEN REMOTE|Caravanning

- Caravan breakages or damage to your caravan when remote is one of the most challenging experiences you will face when travelling around Australia and doing the big lap. You do expect some damage due to off-road and remote conditions but it is still a horrible and inconvenient situation when it happens.
In this episode we experience more bad luck and damage when travelling to a remote station on corrugated roads. It requires 4x4 capability to get here and we need to drive to the conditions. Even when being extremely cautious things can go wrong when off-road caravanning.
Fortunately some bad roads lead to some excellent memories and beautiful camping stays near the Ningaloo Coast in Western Australia. Not all is lost and we manage to have an amazing week of travel near the beautiful beaches of the Ningaloo Coast.
We hope our episodes bring you some information on what to expect when travelling around Australia and also as we share our amazing travelling story.

Can’t believe you let Sue wear her tshirt inside out the whole time!😂
😂😂😂😂 I only just realised it when I watched the episode! And all day!!😂
The first thing l saw😂
@@suelandolt6840too funny 😆
Day two of wearing that top. Hot tip to save on washing
Me at work with mine inside out and no one tells me till I’m about to knock
Thanks for being real and not glossing over the troubles we all have on the road.
Thanks for the feed back. We are just being us 👍🏻
Great Video guys.. we went up to Karumba last fortnight in the van and let out Tindog lol, MAGIC place..!
😂😂😂 love it guys! Great to hear and hope you get out again soon!
Nice video you two. Felt your pain with breakages. Beautiful turtle shot.
Thanks so much for the feedback. Yes the turtle was amazing 😊 something special about them and made my WA trip seeing one!
Wow just wow. We love how you manage to overcome the obstacles that are thrown at you.
Thank you. I suppose it could have been worse but we try and stay positive and keep moving forward
Great video, thanks for sharing, I heard some people were allowing the caravan park water to go through their pipes etc., worse thing to do as their water is not desalinated bore water, hence the salt is going to wreck the plumbing in the Caravans who have chosen to do that, I went to Bullara Station Stay for that reason, an amazing place to camp for many nights
That is super interesting! Thanks for sharing. Yes Bullara is amazing. Such an awesome station stay. Thanks for the tip!
Hi Guys
Hey Deryck, can I offer a little tip, I'm sure you've got your water tank issue sorted, however if it was yo happen again ( God forbid) that hose that was letting out water from tank two, just bend it over back on itself and cable tie it tight
That will stop the water till you can fix mate, great episode once again gho
Thanks so much, yes that would ha e sorted it. I think we were just so baffled and wish we had thought of that! Great tip 👍
Thanks for the helpful tip. Will definitely remember that if it happens again😁 Thank you for the support
Love your positivity Sue, glad you managed to butter your own roll Deryck 😂, your wife is appreciative I'm sure 😅. Tip: buy Sue a nice bottle of champagne and wine with Corks (champagne are larger bulbous and wine skinnier - they make ideal emergency water plugs that can be easily crafted/cut to fit most applications.. I have even drilled one out to make an emergency tap fitting once, and also a pair of hose crimps or small pair of vice grips to clamp off water lines to prevent the loss of water if a fitting or pipe breaks. Also handy should a brake line bursts etc.(Just a tip that I use - take from it what you wish) Great episode guys - fantastic editing Deryck - you both make my day 😊
Thanksnso much, apologies on the delay in response OMG yes a cork! That's brilliant! Thanks so much for the tip and support really appreciate the feedback!
Hey mate ,if the fitting don't work ,just kink the hose and cable tie it couple times so you can at least use the one tank until repair, it worked for me one time
Great advice, thanks Chris can't believe we didn't think of that! Would have saved us losing the second tank!
Good morning 😊 Cold weather you had 🥶 in the morning 😊 Thanks for the tip on driving on dirt with other travelers 👍🏼 The caravan had to take a leak 😂 nice spot to park the van 👍🏼 Sue your shirt is inside out 😂 Delicious quick meal 😋 Beautiful beach , nice drone shots and love the Marine life ❤ Lekker braai mate 😊 Nice , clean bathrooms , always makes my wife happy 😊 Shit 💩happens 😢 no water is a problem . Nice D I Y 😊 Thanks for a great episode 👏🏼
Greetings Mates From South Africa 🇿🇦
😂😂😂 caravan had to take a leak 😂😂😂 love it!
Loved watching your vid guys even with the break downs, it is good to see things that happen on the road even if it wasn’t what you planned, great advice from you both and will start picking up spares for the future 😁 lol Sue I am an inside out person too! Hehehe had to giggle lol but you guys are real and that’s the best 😁 look forward to watching each week thanks for inspiring us! Hi Bobby! 😁
Thank you so much. When we free camping we have to do the sniff test and turn our clothes inside out 😂. We appreciate the support 😁
Thanks guy,s ,another top vid.We knew Deryck would sort it and you Sue used all the encourage words.
Well done. Thanks👍🏿
Thanks Doug, yes I am so fortunate that Deryck is so handy amd capable when it comes to repairs! Makes a big difference when you are on the road to be able to fix things yourself!
Thank you. It pays to be a bit handy on the road as these things happen
Lovely Ep guys and bugger about the water,
Thanks Craig appreciate the feedback and support as always!
Ya gotta love corrogated roads and plastic fittings 😄😄
😂 for sure, we learn something new just about everyday on the road!
We enjoy you guys keeping it real and entertaining and informative but OMG I was so frustrated watching that precious water disappear without a hack to stem the flow. I won’t repeat what a number of people have said. On our launch we carried a box of tapered wooden pegs to temp fix any leaks. simple hacks as mentioned seem better for a van.
Thanks Brian, appreciate the feedback! Yes agree was super painful losing the water and even more painful when we read all the tips and realised we could have saved it 😮😮 will def have some pegs and even just folding the hose back! We appreciate your support!
Thanks for showing us reality of travelling. Can I ask what do you do with puppy when you do a tour?
Great videos guys..... But was that a shark at 12:00?
Yes it was a shark! Just other side of the reef! I was in a bait ball and got spooked as not fond of sharks!
@@suelandolt6840 Good grief!
Deryck! I thought you were going to blackout when Sue said $125!!! 😂😂
😂😂😂 yes ahaha. Oops 😊
😂😂😂
Great underwater footage!
Thanks so much!
Your a joy Sue! Thanks being so upbeat!
Thanks so much that's lovely feedback!
It is what it is with breaking things chin up guys keep the vids coming great places you sre going to 😊
Thank you
I put a couple of mud flaps in front of the water tank fittings and purchased a spare tap and fitting.
Great advise. Will take that on board 👍🏻
A quick temporary fix would be whittle a stick down and force in may help not losing all your water. Sad you had to leave Warrara there is so many beaches and good fishing and squiding there. Enjoying your posts
Thanks so much yes I believe the fishing and squidding squidding is unreal there! Really appreciate the support. Have a great week!
I can not believe you just bought your first welding gauntlets!
😂😂😂 and he loves them!
Can't agree more. Something we should have had from the start.
I liked the comment that the hired hand was a RUSTY plumber 😂
I always carry a product called loxseal. It is in a very durable tube and is perfect for poly fitting. It is a little pricey but will last a lifetime.
Great for steam petroleum and of course potable water etc
The hose that was leaking the water from the good tank, all you had to do was fold the hose over a couple of times and use a zip tie on it, or put a bolt or pencil up the hose and reuse the hose clamp.
👍👍👍🤔🤔🤔 yes! Would have been great to think of that at the time 😂 thanks for the tip, will def do that next time, hopefully there isn't a next time but if there it. Would have been great to share that with viewers. Hopefully they read the comments!
That’s very funny swimming in a bait ball😂🐠🐟🐠🐟🐠🐟🐠
Another great week. ✔️
Safe travels this week x
Thanks so much. I nearly had a heart attack when I put my goggles in the water and I was surrounded by bait...= 🦈 food!
Thank you so much.
Great Episode as always 🍷🍷🏕️
I would put pool noodles around the water pipes and that would fix it for ever .have a wonderful week 🍷🍷🦋🍹🍹
Thanks Paul, yes the good old pool noodle! 😂 will look at some further protection. Hope you have a great week and thanks for the feedback!
All so real. That's what makes your vlogs great! Sorry that you had to go through all of that but like you said, that's life on the road. It amazes me how you can produce a really interesting episode with all that going on ✅
Thanks so much Jason, yes have to just keep on truckin! 😂 things do go wrong on the road and we have had a real unlucky run but fortunately a cheap fix this one. Hope you are well and appreciate your support!
Another great episode and it’s great that you show what life on the road is really like. Love Sues sense humour. Keep up the great work.
Thanks so mich for the feedback and support Geoff. Yes thinks its important to show all ups and downs. 😊
Thank you 😁
Great video as usual. Must admit we wasn’t wondering about the tape measure on the kitchen bench. As we were too busy discussing Sue had her tshirt inside out.. haha, real time… loving it.. thanks guys, enjoyed it thoroughly. Disheartening about loosing that water!!
😂😂😂 yes I noticed that straight away on camera, I would have had it inside out all day 😂
Thank you 😁 We didn't even notice the t-shirt being inside out 😂
Hi Sue you should really invest in a stinger suit at least. I have found a wetsuit isn’t really needed up there but a stinger suit is important as there are all sorts of stingers in those waters including the potential for irukanji.
😮😮😮 thanks Grant, I will look into one. That's really good advice and I didn't even think of stingers! I know there are plenty in FN QLD.
Feel for you guys with the water tanks, happen to us on the Darling River Run. Now we always carry Knead It, will generally get you out of trouble.
Oooh that's great advice, thanks so much guys. Will pick so.e up next time we are in a big enough town!
Omgosh such a beautiful turtle!!! Awesome! That must have been such a great experience Sue! ❤️
Thanks Mandi it was amazing g and 100% made my WA experience. All I wanted to do was see a turtle! It was spectacular and I watched it for about 15 mins! Thanksnso much for your support!
another great ep. guys, great to see 'real' van life once again and so good to see Derek pick himself back up again after a few challenges tested him.
100% thanks so much Robyn. We are trying to show the good with the bad. It's an amazing lifestyle but there are some humps in the road! Thanks for your support and have a great week!
Thank you.
Put a different look on things, the water tank issues, and deciding to move where meant to be. They made you move for a reason, not your time to be at this location.
Heads up and keep travelling safely.
100% agree Linda, I am a firm believer in everything happens for a reason 😊 thanks for the comment and support!
That was a bugger of a thing to happen but alls well now enjoy your time now good video sue
Thanks Dianne, had some bad luck but it was a cheap fix and we are 100% back on the road and living large! Have a great week!
Thank you
Great episode guys. It's the realities of life on the road :D Thanks heaps for putting the work in to bring us your travels.
Thanks so much for the feedback and support. Yes 100% it's the reality. Mostly good but definitely some warts 😂
Thank you for the support and we hope we can continue to bring epic content
Highlighting the negatives as well as the positive's is alway's good it like wet and rainy days how you entertain yourself when you can't leave the van. OK if in a town you can go and walk around under cover but if remote camping not so easy.
100% agree. Yes very important to see the good and challenging parts of the lifestyle all in all still great but does throw a few curve balls every now and then 😂
Fantastic work
Thank you
Great shots under water there, team. Isn't it great having a beach to yourself. It certainly beats the crowded resorts. 😊
It's soooo good! Remote is amazing! The snorkelling was amazing as well. We got so much beautiful footage. And I saw a turtle = happy Sue
Thank you. Its great when you get the beach to yourself especially when its so busy around the area
Great vid so far but Is it normal to have your shirt inside out while cooking your squid Sue? 🤣🤣
Apparently yes!!!! 😂😂😂 it took me about 2 seconds to realise but Deryck didn't notice on the day nor when he was editing!!! 😂😂😂
Love watching your videos every week , can't wait for the next one
Thanks Vicky, that's lovely feedback and really appreciate it! Hope you have an amazing week!
Thank you so much. Appreciate the support 😁
great episode! Do you have a session with what type of video equipment you use?
Thanks for the feedback, not yet but we will do one.
Will definitely do an episode on what we use😁
great vid guys. I feel ya pain. I have had the same experience
Thanks Robert, I did have to giggle after the fact that we broke it on the way in and out! All life lessons and part of the experience!
thank you 😁
What kind of work do you do Sue, I'd love to see your set up cause I'm hoping to work on the road too.
Rhanksnso much, I work 8n recruitment hiring team members for Bupa. I have ny laptop and starlink and that does the job!
Same broke water tap of tanks and plugged with blu tack , or lilo bung, cork , blu tack lasted weeks
That's annawesome tip! Really appreciate it! Hopefully won't be a next time but if there is a next time plenty of tips.
Another ripper guys, can always plan for a great time, sometimes issues pop up, it could have been worse, great idea with those extra fittings
Thanks so much 100% agree 👍 and it was a cheap fix 😊
@@suelandolt6840The best kind!!
First thing we did with our van was put protection flaps in front of all fittings and use pool noodles to cover all water lines and gas lines.
Kink pipe over and cable tie...
That's awesome advice. Thanks so much and yes will be looking to see what we can do to protect it moving forward!
Good job on being real! We traveled for the year last year and it’s defiantly not all rainbows and sunshine like a lot of people make out. Keep up the good work! 💪
The old teapot is a legend 😂
Thanks so much, yes it's a greay experience but not without its realities and challenges. Overall still love it 😊
Thank you 😁
Another great episode. Have you ever given consideration to the name of your caravan which is ROUGHRIDER ? To me, it brings up all sorts of connotations, one that I can remember is a brand of Condom. I'm sorry I have put that into your head. You know certain things, like songs, once they are in your head you find it difficult to get rid of it. Good luck to Just Vanning It Condom Style.
😂😂😂 yes it is the first thing we thought of when we bought the van!
I've never understood why caravan and tank makers have their fittings in the side of the tanks and nit at the rears, would save that problem.
Also- slice open a pool noodle and cover the exposed pipes and fittings, might save them from being broken also. Safe travels...🤙
Thanks so much will def be doing some prep before we do the Gibb. Nothing better than a good old pool noodle!
Derek!! How did you not notice Sue’s shirt inside out….. no husband points for you mate.😂
😂😂😂 too funny, I noticed it within 2 seconds of watching the episode! When I asked him..."was it?...! 😂
@@suelandolt6840 Hahaha… men…
Such a special coastline, the footage of the turtle so beautiful. Bummer about the water, hopefully it’s all fixed now but at least it did take you to Coral Bay :) I hope the tape measure in the kitchen is moved now so it doesn’t bother Deryck anymore 😂😂
Thanks Robyn. Yes it was worth the visit to Coral Bay and have managed to sort it. Fortunately a cheap fix! Ironically it was Derycks tape measure that wasn't put away and just moved around the caravan for a week 😂😂😂
Still an awesome video guys🙌 love the footage Sue got with the turtle. Also love the fly updates from Deryck each episode…crack up !
Thanks Kylie 😂 deryck is obsessed with the flies and the weather! 😅😅😅he provides regular updates even off camera 😂
Thank you
Should put mudflat near the water tank that should stop damage the fitting on the water tank or buy two truck mudflats cross back of your 4wd drive
Yes 100% great idea! Thanks so much for sharing.
Pour boiling water over the crackle just before going in the oven and pat dry. Salt and oil as normal and high heat for 30 minutes then lower 👍
A great video as usual, if I were travelling with you I would look after bobby. I have 2 little dogs also.
Love to the 3 of u.❤❤❤
Aah thanks Anne that's lovely! And very kind 😊 they make such great companions! Life wouldn't be the same without Bobby bouncing around 😂
The first thing I did when I got our new van was I got underneath and checked what the manufacturer missed and then put a big blob of silicone around each tap screwed into each tank. Then I got some 3mm rubber and made a shroud by sliding in the rubber between the tank and the sheet metal to make a shroud to protect the tap.
BTW I went through 2 tubes of silicone finding things they missed or added more protection.
😮😮😮 that's incredible! 2 tunes! That is really clever and solid advice for anyone reading these posts. Will get Deryck to read this one too. Appreciate the tip and support!
@@suelandolt6840 you’re welcome @biglap.aus
@@suelandolt6840 along with the tap I sealed up on the chassis underneath every gap and hole I could find but not those for drainage.
Pipes going through the floor I applied more silicone some had a token amount. Any open piece of steel tubing I sealed up with a plastic stopper from Bunnings and siliconed it. You’d be surprised what you can find underneath they missed. Parts of the floor they missed underneath.
I get under the caravan every month for an inspection. I always find something. @Biglap.Aus
Pretty cushy camping with a van like that ..
100% very comfortable and all the comforts (Less the bathroom tub!) 😊
What underwater camera do you have?
Hey Faith, we just use a go pro 11!
What drone do you use and also what editing programs..? Thanks
Hi Paul it's a Mavic 2 and we use Premier Pro 😊
Things might not go to plan for you from time to time but I absolutely love your videos and how you keep it real!! ❤
Thanks Kat, really appreciate that feedback and yes we record just about everything. The good and the bad! It's a great experience but can have challenges at times!
Thank you. 💯 things don't always go to plan but we support each other and work as a team to over come them 😀
Hahaha Sue your hilarious 😂 Great video guys
Thanks Mandy! We had a good week even with the water challenge! Hope you Amanda and are well! Looking forward to catching up over a few wines!
thank you
The turtle footage was cool
Ooooh I loved the turtle, I was hanging out to see one and finally did = 1 happy Sue 😊
Just had a little giggle to myself when I saw your Shirt inside out.......getting double wear as you lost your water hey.
The old sniff test and turn it inside out 😂😂😂😂😂

I wear mine inside out sometimes to see if my hubby notices. If he does I say just felt like a change 😂😂

Sue u r a swimming warrior 🥰
Thanks Vicki, I am an absolute water baby, always have been and love it! 😊
Hi guys,
Just a question for you, what is the name of your South African spice you use to put on you steaks?
Cheers
Hey it is Worcester spice.
Hey mate, you are probably sorted by now but you could a bolt into the hose
Thanks so much, can't believe we didn't think of that but will def help us in future! Have a great week!
Yeah simple things sometimes, I'm a truck mechanic and we do that "fix" quite alot.
Thank for the handy tip. Will remember that if it happens again😁
Sue, How do you go with work on WA time harder or easier? love your videos. Cheers.
Hey, I start 2 hours earlier as I work Melbourne hours but it means I finish at 3pm and get to enjoy the afternoons! 🎉
👏🏻👏🏻❤❤ come on big D surely you could have did the old skinny dip or go in with the reg grundys 😂😂 and please Sue no filming 😱😵💫
Safe travels guys 👨🏻🌾🤙🏻
😂😂😂 100% that would be hilarious, but def no filming 😂 hope you are well Stewie
HI Guys can you turn camera around so we can see what is happening dont really want to see close up of you to as nice as you both are just want to see what you are looking at so sorry about all the trouble you had with your water keep up the good work
Thanks Maureen, will def keep that in mind and try to balance it out more.
Great thanks really live your videos
Why are the wheels set so far back? What towball weight does your van have? It looks like it would track like a locked in missile. 😊
Yeah wheels are gar back, tow ball is 315. Tows like a dream!
thanks for your reply. It looks awesome
The van tows like a dream but it does bring a heavier ball weight. Thanks to the lighter gas bottles it brought it down a bit 😁
Hi Guys could you tell us what time of year you are at this place?
Hi it was late June. 😊
Hey Derek, maybe a brass tap will fit into tank
Thanks Rod. Deryck is going to look at brass, appreciate the advice!
Definitely just can't get brass where we are
Might get some spare fittings for tanks myself.
A good idea! 👍
Definitely worth it 👍🏻
Fold the leaking hose over and cable tie it…too late now I guess…
Yeah, can't believe we didn't think of that but know for next time! Thanks for the tip!
Should’ve used a bolt or even a stick to block the hose
Guys it is what it is , next time ya get caught out with a leaking tank shove a stick in the holes mate will save some water 💦 👍👍
Thats a great suggestion Paul! We have had a couple of good ones come through which help us if it happens again or to help someone else out!
It's a tough life for BOB controlling humans
😂😂😂 he does it so well!
What camera do you use for under water video
Hi Alan, just a GoPro 11. 😊
We use the latest GoPro 11 for under water but the dpi action camera is also just as good
Thanks guys
Hope to catch up with you on the road one day
Why why didn’t your catch some water 💦
Just kink the hose and wrap tape around it.
👍👍👍 can't believe we didn't think of that!
Tape or zip tie
Water tanks….Bugger!
Maaate, 1 think you can't live without! On the upside it was a super cheap fix!
Why didn’t you just fold the plastic hose back on its self put a tie rap around it to save loosing the other tank of water 🤔 instead of watching it was down the road.
😮😮😮🤔🤔🤔😬😬😬 yes, good point 😂 that would have been an excellent idea...had we thought of it. Great call out!
I was really upset to see you with tears on the video Promo pick. But non on video feel like was click bait Really glad it was fixable problem and you were not hurt for any reason (re tears)But was annoyed that pick was even there and sorry we did laugh when you said he was a plumber but unable to kink hose and cable tie or tape up
Sorry Cathy, didn't mean to upset you in anyway and appreciate your feedback. We take all feedback onboard and appreciate that you shared it. And yes can't believe neither one of us thought to bend pipe back! Think we were just so flustered with 3 issues the week before and then this issue. Anyway will remember for next time. Hope you have a lovely week!
If you don’t put a pool noodle or similar on all plastic pipes in line with your truck tyres you won’t make the Gibb. Everything under the van is about to get pounded to death. Good luck it’s called off roading. You against the elements see who wins
Thanks for the heads up Trevor. Appreciate it! Yes I think we will get a pounding. Will try to prepare but inevitably something goes wrong in conditions like that!
You needed to carry 2part putty so that you can cover hole until you can repair it.
Thanks Natalie, that's a top tip! Appreciate it!
You’d think when your paying the best part of $100k for a caravan that the manufacturers could at least use brass tank fittings wouldn’t you?
The extra $5 is going to break the company’s profit margins? 🤷♂️🙄
Of course plastic fittings are going to fatigue & break on corrugated roads over time.
Yes 100% agree. Our friend brought hos brand new caravan home and changed out all the fittings for brass straight away!
Here's hoping that was the last of your bad luck. 🤞
Thanks Mark, yes fingers crossed but at least it was a cheap fix!
Not sure if it would work plugging a water hole get them rubber plugs that push in to plug a hole their tappered twist them in sould slow it down
Thanks David, you always have the best tips. Will need to "000" you next time something goes wrong!
@@suelandolt6840 ok 👍 😮
@@suelandolt6840 and its more comfy to ware ya shirts inside out any way 😄👍

😂😂😂 thanks so much! Working hard at it and hope to keep going!
