+Bad Drivers of Central NJ Notice the lorry driver, who said, "I'm getting paid" with a smile...nowadays he'd be fuming because 30% of his pay or free time, which hasn't gone up by much since then, is dependant on whether he makes his deliveries quickly.
wwhhee your life didn’t end if you couldn’t contact your work or family within a short amount of time. Disasters or inconveniences were handled like “good, I have an EXCUSE to have a break”. You gotta think it was still a modern world fast paced but there wasn’t the kind of competition with every day people - especially working poor - who are currently in danger of losing their job caught up in an incident like this no matter how widespread the story.
Because they wont go homeless from missing a day of work unlike the 60% of anericans who will literalky go homeless and die of they miss a singular paycheck.
This was in 1988 - wow! Times have changed since then - except for the turnpike, of course. It still gets jammed at times due to accidents. And most of those cars are probably in junkyards now. Did I just see a Chevy Nova? I saw a Ford Escort hatchback and an Omni-derived Dodge Charger (formerly Omni 024).
Yeah so I assume you never made it to the power plant that day? Given you didn't film up to when this traffic jam ended it seems like you ran out of film.
Damn. The fact that you remember the details 29 years later must mean this was a day you'd never forget. I can never imagine being in a traffic jam like this (been in a couple cases where no one was moving for a little while but it wasn't to the point we were all out of our cars).
Don Bull I'm sure there was a Dyna-Tac or two among those motorists. Non-transportable car phones too. Not that such a call would have been cheap by any means.
lol good one....car phones weren't even that common then...mostly businessmen had them....they even had fake ones that ppl would buy to pretend they had one.
Damn this was a time when it looked like people in NJ were happy despite the situation. Today everyone would honk their horns and yell.
You got that right!!!
Or people would be on edge as their phones would need to be charged and they can’t charge them
People seem much happier back then.
+Bad Drivers of Central NJ There wasn't any internet drama. lol

Wow I was 3 months old when this was made. Crazy everyone in the video is 30 years older now.
Half of these people are in there 40 , 50 , 60 , 70 , 80 , 90 or even 100
I was filming it. Now I am 75.
The woman on her way to Williamsburg, VA would probably be around 110 today.
that girl in the red car was really cute
This is gold !!
My god Jersey sure Isn’t like it used to be
Imagine the son or grandson, of one of the people, watching this and seeing how young they look lol
People seemed happy even in disaster then :-( what happened today
We had a grand memorable time!
why are some of the cars headed to the other direction in the same road?
They were trying to go back to get off the highway at the last entrance.
Everybody Hurts.
I wonder how many of those people were silently kicking themselves over having not taken the Western Spur instead?
Or taking the Parkway
Feels odd seeing ppl without masks on
I haven't watched this yet but is this when the oil storage tanks caught fire in Linden or Elizabeth?
No, it was an asphalt truck that overturned further up the road, it's in the description.
I’m a retired nj trooper and this was my crash investigation.. I can’t believe it’s on YT!!! Side note, ppl sure were more calm back then lol
6:40 - Interview with "The International Fan Club of 'The Golden Girls' ".
I was almost 4 years old to the day!!!
This was 2 years before I was born lol
Which car/truck is Don Bull's? I think it was a Chevy Astrovan?
Yes
Railer505 Chevy Astro and GMC Safari - the pride of Baltimore from 1985 to 2005!
Since this is a toll road do you think these drivers got their tolls refunded? Clearly they didn't get the service they paid for...
No, we didn't get a refund!

We did miss our appointment. And, yes, the batteries in the camcorder were dead.

It was frustrating but we passed the time well.
I was born this day
Do anyone know these people in the video?
Happy 30th anniversary... doing anything to commemorate?
Nothing special - just a distant memory.
I bet it really smelled out there, did it? Even with all the vehicles engines turned off I am assuming.
Now its cursing and robbing
why dont they just call the people theyre supposed to pickup on their cellphones and tell them theyre going to be late?
It was 1988. I don't think many of the folks had cellphones.
Don Bull I'm sure there was a Dyna-Tac or two among those motorists. Non-transportable car phones too.

@@honorbluelovelyful Born and raised in Jersey. First cell phone I saw was mounted in a car which belonged to a lawyer..probably around 1983/84.
