This is a very special episode of Acoustic Tuesday.Today we honor the life and legacy of Master Luthier, Preston Thompson who passed away on April 11, 2019.
Tony, thanks for this special episode. My wife and I had just traveled out to Sisters, OR at the end of March to pick up my new Preston Thompson, dreadnought guitar, just two weeks prior to Preston's passing. I was deeply saddened to hear the news. I talked to Preston on the phone several time but did not get the chance to meet him in person. The whole team at Thompson guitars are great people and very talented at what they do. I am extremely happy with my new guitar and much like you with yours I can't stop saying "this Thompson guitar is Amazing"......it really is amazing in both sound and craftsmanship.
Not gonna lie, I teared up big time when Molly was playing next to Preston... what a lovely moment.
I'm sorry to hear of Preston Thompson's passing. I've never played a Thompson guitar, but it's obvious that he was dedicated to his art and to music. The part where the family requests us listen, share, and enjoy music hit home in a big way. Listening to music has been, and will continue to be, a way my family copes with grief while honoring our fallen. I hope that music and the memories of a life well lived will help with the healing process for his friends and family. My heartfelt condolences go out to the Thompson family.
Tony, thanks for your kindness and sense of family regarding Preston Thompson and the greater community at large. You really do connect all of us in a very big way. You sure do care a great deal and it shows. All the best man.
Nicely done Tony. Very touching and special. Thank you.
I never would have known about Preston Thompson or his beautiful instruments, if it wasnt for you guys here at Acoustic Life.
Thanks for posting this tribute to Preston Thompson. I met him in 1979 when I went to visit my sister at Austin College in Sherman, Texas. I saw him with the first guitar he had just finished at luthier school. Years later I acquired a cutaway dread built by him in his early years building in Texas. That was a wonderful guitar but I really loved his later OM styles he started building later. So sorry to hear of his death.
Wonderful memorial tribute. Thank you, Tony and Noah. Well done.
So well spoken! Here here!!
Tony & Noah - Thanks for sharing this beautiful tribute to Preston Thompson! Guitar geeks know that wonderfully crafted guitars have a legacy all their own. I know that Preston Thompson's legacy will live large into the future!
Tony you continue to demonstrate what a class act you are!
This is the first I've heard of Preston Thompson, but wow - what nice guitars! Assuming his shop will continue making guitars, I will have to stop by and visit them as I live in Portland, OR. Sisters is a beautiful small town nestled in the 3 Sisters Wilderness area of Oregon. If you have never been there, you should check it out.
Thank you Tony for posting this wonderful tribute to Preston Thompson. Our guitar/music community has been forever enriched by Preston Thompson’s passion and work. Thank you Mr. Thompson for all the wonderful instruments you’ve made. And thank you for passing on your knowledge to others who will continue to express your commitment to tonal excellence.

I never heard of Preston Thompson until I got an alert on my phone the other day at work . Thank You Tony and Noah for all the work you do and for sharing. I watched the AL Petteway reviewing his Preston Thompson Brazilian 000
What a beautiful tribute. Thanks guys.
Preston has gone beyond the physical and lives on in our collective souls. Safe travels Preston. You made the world a better place.
Such a beautiful remembrance of Preston. Sad to say I live in Eugene and never have visited the shop and never met the man that created so many wonderful instruments. Thank you Tony and everyone involved for putting the video together and sharing. Much Love
Thank you for the special episode. Very sad news on the loss of Mr. Thompson.
Really sad news. Thank you guys for the meaningful special. He will be missed.
Man what a wonderful tribute. Thanks for sharing this.
Excellent tribute. Much appreciated. Good on you AT folks!!
I have tickets to The Avett Brothers in August in bend Oregon. I planned on visiting the shop :(. I’ll still put cash aside and maybe they will have some for sale still by then, but what a loss of an amazing builder and from my home state to boot.
A wonderful, much-deserved tribute, Tony, well done! I've never played a Thompson, but I have heard any number of them, including Molly Tuttle playing her Thompson in concert this past year, so I know they are superb instruments, worthy of a place at the very top of the list of the world's finest custom guitars. We truly do live in the New Golden Era Of Guitarmaking.
Amazing people, amazing guitars. Another great loss to the world of music.
Hey Tony, Noah and the rest of the AT crew. Thanks for putting this together. I know I'm a newbie here in the guitar world. But I recognize and appreciate artistry when I see it. And Preston was an artist. All our thoughts go out to Preston, his family and his crew. Lou B
Thank you Tony/Noah for sharing with us this awesome and very special video.
Tony, thank you for video of Preston and his guitars. I want to second what @Jonathan Meyer stated below; I would have never known about Thompson guitars had I not subscribed to your channel and opened a whole new world of acoustic beauty to my eyes, ears, and fingers. Thank you.
Wonderful video Tony. Thanks for putting this up. I first heard of Thompson guitars when Tim May played in my local cafe on the small Scottish island where I live. It was an amazing gig, and Thompson guitars have been on my radar ever since.
Wow ... excellent video... tyvm.
Best episode ever. Didn't comment first time I watched but just had to this time. Cheers P[>
in my opinion preston thompson guitars are really the best. they do things like make guitars out of shipwrecked wood or abandoned mine beams. it makes them stand out.
Never met the man, but I feel sad at his passing. Tony, you have a keepsake instrument now. Treasure it.
Really enjoyed this post ! :-)
This is a great video, Tony. Good work!
he will be greatly missed
RIP fellow Master Luthier. May you fix all the guitars in heaven that need neck-resets
It's thoughts and prayers.....
There is almost a reverence on Billy Strings face when he sees the new guitar and lifts it out of the case..
