  • Women in STEM: Meet Dr. Sandra Faber, Professor Emerita and former chair of the Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC).
This is a highlight from our 2-part conversation with Dr. Sandra Faber from our #WomeninSTEM TV series that aired (airs) on a bunch of PBS & Public Media channels.
We wanted to know how have women done in the field of science and technology over the years? "In my field there has been a big improvement," shares Dr. Sandra Faber. More than 50 percent of women at the Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics at UCSC are women she adds. Dr. Faber shares how their new chair for Vera Rubin (renowned American astronomer) at USCS is designed to promote diversity, which includes women in their astronomy and astrophysics department. Dr. Faber and her husband helped fund the chair for Vera Rubin at UCSC.
Dr. Faber’s research interests include the structure and birth of galaxies and the design and construction of large optical telescopes, and optical instrumentation for astronomy.
This is a highlight of our 2-part conversation with Dr. Faber about how she got interested in science and what drew her to study astronomy and astrophysics. This 2-part episode is part of Season 4 of our #WomeninSTEAM series that spotlights the role of “hidden figures” in Silicon Valley.
