- Hey, beautiful soul! I'm so excited you're here today because I am announcing our 2024 yearlong Mystery Knit Along (MKAL)! Our previous mystery make alongs have been super popular, so we can’t wait to do it with you again! And did I mention that there will be prizes? Oodles of them this year! Here's how it works...
Each month in 2024, we'll release another clue along with yarn color recommendations and a video tutorial. Follow along for the entire year, and at the end of 2024, you'll have knitted your own extraordinary blanket or shawl. This year's MKAL project, Brilliance, is offered in four different options - blanket, shawl, symmetrical blanket, and symmetrical shawl, so you get to choose!
Today's video provides more information about what you can expect and how the event works, and I also demonstrate how to work the I-Cord cast on edge that you can use to start your project.
Download Clue #1 of Brilliance at www.expressionfiberarts.com/p...
Be sure to sign into your account when downloading the pattern, so when future clues go live, you'll only need to login and re-download the pattern to receive the next clue.
To knit Brilliance, you will need 12 different colored skeins of our luxurious, dreamy soft Buttery Sport yarn or an equivalent amount of yarn/yardage in another sport-weight yarn. For Clue #1, we used Fuchsia Glow Buttery Sport.
Each month, we’ll let you know which color we used for that clue, but you can also create your own color combination. We recommend that you choose colors with a good amount of contrast among them, and knit Brilliance with at least two different colors.
expressionfiberarts.com/categ...
Buttery Sport is a fun and boingy, 100% Superwash Superfine Merino Wool yarn that’s squishy and bouncy! No itchiness or scratchiness here! What’s not to love about this super soft, lush, and cuddly sport-weight yarn that’s also machine washable? This 2-ply yarn produces fat, full stitches and is wonderful for projects of all types! 300 yds/274 m per 100-gram skein.
Gauge is very important for this project, as it will affect the amount of yarn needed. If you wish to make a shawl or blanket that only uses 12 skeins of Buttery Sport, you’ll need to match the gauges listed in the pattern. We're also curating two additional color combinations that you can use instead of the recommended Buttery Sport colors listed above.
The first set of alternative colors is the Buttery Sport Warm Cottagecore palette: A) Ceres Buttery Sport.
The second set of alternative colors is the Twisted Tweed Sport Magnificent Moment palette: A) Stardew Twisted Tweed Sport.
We are also having a yearlong contest for this pattern with prizes! And they’re going to be bigger and better than ever with both monthly prizes and HUGE grand prizes! Join us on our 2024 MKAL Ravelry thread at www.ravelry.com/discuss/expre... and get more information about the MKAL. You'll also receive pattern support and make friends with other knitters.
I do hope you'll join us for this year's MKAL and that you have a marvelous day! Sign up for email updates to receive more knit and crochet patterns. We aim for one a week, and most are free for a limited time only. You'll also get coupon codes and be among the first to hear about new limited yarns! XOXO

Yes! It's here 😃❤ I already love it, thank you! ❤
Yes!! Can't wait to get started!! ❤❤❤❤
Sounds lovely Chandi!😊
Looks so fun!
O my beautiful friend thank yes ready go!!!!! love it crochet 🧶 🌺
I LOVE that dress! So beautiful.
Yay!downloaded the pattern. Thank you for making this pattern free.
This year I'm surely gonna participate this MKAL, Insha'Allah.
Looking forward to my commitment to this project and a gorgeous Knit product 😁😁🥰😘
What a beautiful cast on! I'm still learning to knit, but I'm going to download this to try!
Wonderful! 💝
I’m excited to try this! I started as a knitter when I was 12. I have been almost exclusively crocheting the past few years so. I’m excited and nervous to dust off my knitting skills. I am looking forward to working on a better way of holding the needles and yarn. Now all I’m waiting for is my new circular knitting set and merino wool yarn to show up!
Woohoo, have fun with it 💚
I'm loving it, but I have to finish Multivalance first.
Ive done dozens of i-cord edges, this is the first with a slip stitch, very interesting! Sounds lovely, but I still have so many projects I need to finish from last year. 🙄
LOVE the idea of prizes, but Ive never won a thing....ever. 🤷🏼♀️ I cant even tell you how many MKALs Ive done.
Not too jazzed on colorwork, unless its mosaic...I mean, I can do it, its gorgeous, I dont like it. With the floats, Im just not sure its good for a blanket, unless its just decorative, but what fun is that!?!😂😂
Several pages of notes is a lot!!!! Even for a very expirenced knitter....Ive done numerous sample knits.
My word your dress is STUNNING! Did you name it yourself?
I agree her dress is just beautiful
Brand: Anthropology
Aww, thank you! The dress is store bought, most likely Anthropologie.
Makes me a tad nervous as a relative beginner to require a video to cast on, but I'll certainly give it a try! Ooops. Just downloaded and read the pattern instructions. Looks like I'll have to take a pass on this one with a 2-page Notes section that I couldn't follow. I'll happily stick with the MCAL this year as my knitting skills are clearly not to the "mystery" result stage yet.
I'm sorry to hear that 💔
I’m allergic to wool and I was wondering what recommendations that you would have for this pattern of alternatives as well as maybe an acrylic option?
Unfortunately, we don't offer an acrylic yarn but try this website here to find a yarn substitute: yarnsub.com/
I don’t mean to be a bummer, but I know this is a mystery, but it would be nice to see the finish product just to decide if it’s something I want to invest in or to determine? Which version is the way I want to go
I'm sorry but that's not possible. We want to keep it a mystery for everyone so you'll need to wait to a few clues to decide if it's something you'd like to make. I'm sorry I don't have a better solution. 💕
I love that sweater in your thumbnail!!! Did you make that?? I need to know😍if not where did you find it! I'm so excited to participate this year! Already started the co and I cord which is a new one for me. Love it. Gotta get to ravelry 😁
It's store bought and might be from Anthropology or freepeople. I don't remember right now. Sorry :(
I might be missing something, but for MCAl clues, one and two are in one document. When I opened up the latest brilliance, it only had clue 2. Are they going to be combined for MKAL as well?
I just downloaded the MKAL pattern and it includes both clues, 1 & 2. Please try again, your pdf should have 14 pages. 💕
I've joined the Ravelry group, however is it for both the Crochet along and the Knit along 2024?
There are actually 2 threads in our Ravelry group, the 2024 MCAL thread (www.ravelry.com/discuss/expression-fiber-arts/4292005/1076-1100#1086) and the 2024 MKAL one (www.ravelry.com/discuss/expression-fiber-arts/4295022/26-50#26).
I hope this answers your question. 🩷
Can I still join and get caught up I had some other projects that I needed to complete before I could start.
Yes, you ca join anytime 💞
This is my first time doing the knit along. Seeing the pattern, I have my work cut out for me 😅
🥰🥰😘😍👏👏👏❤️👍
Is this beginner friendly?? I know how to knit and purl. I have only done this with a size 10 set of needles and thick yarn.
This is a challenging piece, but the designer Jennifer Matlock walks you through each step. I helped test the pattern and learned a lot I didn't know how to do. There will also be the Ravelry forum and Chandi's videos to help. Don't be intimidated! Give it a try!
I am an intermediate beginner. Let’s give it a go!!
As Janet mentioned this design is considered an Adventurous Beginner to Intermediate pattern. I'd give it a try the Ravelry thread is usually a greta place to get help. Here is the link: www.ravelry.com/discuss/expression-fiber-arts/4295022/1-25
Hi there I know this may make me look ignorant but I cannot figure out the ravelry page. I have tried to do these mkals and mcals for years now and I just can’t figure it out. I’d really love to participate. But I just don’t know how to get signed up for it over there. Any advice would be greatly appreciated thank you!
Hi Lara, I'll try my best ti help. Please log into your account on Ravelry.com and follow this link: www.ravelry.com/discuss/expression-fiber-arts/4295022/1-25
There you'll see the initial post by writermomof4 with all the info. At the top right corner of the this post it says "reply to thread". Click this and respond with "I am interested in participating in the MKAL. I have read the rules and agree to abide by them."
There are a few more things that you have to do to be eligible for prizes but those are noted in that first post. I hope this answers your question. Have a nice day! 💝
I just stepped in and as I'm from The Netherlands it'll take some time to read all of the instructions. But I have a question about what (except from the size) is the difference between the shawl / blanket and the symmetrical shawl/ blanket. Is the one asymmetrical of half round? And are those 5 stitches you just shown on the start and finish of every row, of is that the start of the asymmetrical shawl/blanket?
Hi there, thank you for your question I'm happy to help with that. All the versions are rectangles however the symmetrical ones will have the same color order on both ends which means you will need more yarn. I hope this explains it and makes sense.
The 5 stitches shown in the video is one of the options how start either version of the project since they are the same except for the color order.
i hope this explains it. If you have more questions please checkout the Ravelry forum at www.ravelry.com/discuss/expression-fiber-arts/4295022/1-25 all the MKAL participants can ask questions there and you can help each other when something is unclear. Also your questions might have been asked and answered already by someone.
Enjoy! 💜
So if we’re doing symmetrical blanket, each month, we’re doing both ends with two different circular needles, and they are due at the same time?
I got the 1st clue and am not clear on where I register. Also, do I need to sign up for emails since I already get them?
