    I thought Jane went to see Mrs. Reed while she was still at Thornfield, not when she was with the Rivers.

      Most likely for reasons of expediency (namely, so that they would not need to cast and pay another actor!), the directors changed the story and gave to St. John Rivers the task which Bessie undertakes in the book. However, in so doing, they made the story even more improbable. While Mrs. Reed and St. John Rivers are technically related through marriage -- her sister married his mother's brother -- they do not know each other in the book and Mrs. Reed would not have wanted to know him. After all, Mrs. Reed rejected Jane initially because she had disapproved of her sister's marriage so she would not have approved of any of her brother-in--law's family either.

      @@OreadNYC Yes, but it's still better than the old Hollywood version (the one which had Orson Welles as Rochester), where they made Rivers the school doctor of Lowood, which raised some un comfortable questions of why he tolerated what was being done to the girls there.
