I finally tried some of my old Leica R lenses on a Nikon Z 5. By zooming in on a RAW file in Photoshop and pixel-peeping, I could not see much difference between a 90mm f/2 and a Zeiss Milvus 85mm shot on a Nikon D850. That 90mm R was amazingly sharp. I had similar results with a 35mm f/2.8, and was impressed with the 24mm f/2.8 as well. The R lenses are “old” but they certainly work well on a digital platform. They can’t be used on my D850 without removing the rear flange on the lens, so I will only use these on mirrorless cameras. With such non-CPU lenses you lose the focusing dot on digital cameras, and they can be a challenge to focus, even with focus peaking in the viewfinder.
This is a great test. Appreciate the commentary too coz sometimes I can’t really notice the small things. Especially on RUclips. Looking forward to more. Cheers !
i find these to be on the pretty tasteful end of vintage, nothing extreme like the helios or lomo lenses, they feel mora like softer summiluxes, beautiful lenses.
Thanks! Very interesting. The look is very nice but boy, there’s a lot of focus breathing in these lenses! No surprise, I guess, since they are still camera lenses.
Thanks for taking the time to make the video. Do you happen to know the serial numbers? That will indicate what year they were made / how “vintage” the set is
You're trying to sound all pro by using "T" to describe the speed of the lenses but it's clear you don't understand the distinction between F and T. If your lens's F stop is f/1.4 then it is not T1.4 as there are no lenses with no transmission loss. It is at least T1.5.
Damn dude chill out, I misspoke, sorry! Not trying to mislead anyone or sound more knowledgeable or “pro” than I really am. I’ve made it clear from the beginning of this channel that I don’t know what I’m talking about, I’m simply documenting my experiences with the camera. The truth is that I am used to using proper cinema lenses that are measured in T stops. These are the first stills lenses I’ve use for a long time so my brain isn’t used to thinking or saying F stop. While I do know the difference between F stop and T stop and realize that I should have been saying F, I simply made a mistake and said T instead. I’m sorry (not sorry) if my careless mischaracterization of the measurement of the iris ruined your day. I promise to be more careful in future videos. Be sure to subscribe to the channel so you won’t miss the apology video! 😘😘
@@furymotionpictureco.7952 Ok, ok, ok. Yeah, these f/1.4 lenses are probably more like T1.6 due to the vintage coatings which don't reduce transmission loss as the modern coatings. I'm chillaxed now knowing that you are too. Peace. Subscribed.
Next time just put a little more effort in your reviews, go outside and shot something else. I’m tired of the same testing when a person is standing in front of a camera... 🙃
As a lens comparison, this is far more than adequate. When you're testing the camera... then yeah, get out there. I don't think you understand how these things generally benefit other cinematographers, but this is FAR more beneficial as a reference than getting completely different types of shots outside with no consistency
Dima, thanks for watching and thanks for the comment! In response to my lack of creativity all I’ll say is that that I agree, it would be nice to see how they perform in a real world environment as well. Having said that, these shots were really just for me to get a feel for the lenses before I had to use them on set. This wasn’t meant to be a full on, deep dive review. I only posted here because I thought I might be useful for other people to see as well. If you want to see what they look like in practice, make sure to subscribe so you don’t miss the music video I shot with them when it comes out in a couple weeks! Thanks!
@@furymotionpictureco.7952 Well just the fact that you can afford them, shows that people have been happy with your creativity and work so I understand the need of not trying to show off too much. The lenses speak for themselves.

Very nice test. Beautiful lenses however they have quite different tint. The 19 stands out with more magenta than all the others
Thank you, and I totally agree.
The 50mm 1.4 looks so good 🔥🔥

Great! I wish u do a comparison with BMPCC 4K too
Thanks for showing us! 👌🏾🔥I want them for bmpcc6K !

adorable kids and yes the Leica R lenses are awesome!!!
ShootFilm yeah, both are awesome. 😁
Heyyyyy - nice test! was the 19mm v1 or v2?
Yeah, this would be nice to know. They put different coatings on them
Sorry, no idea. I think they were a set form the mid 90s if that helps. 🤷🏼♂️
That would be v2!
That Image quality looks so good tho 😧
Brilliant! May I ask what kind of Leica R these are? Would be interested in the exact name =)
Sorry man, I don’t know exactly. They aren’t mine, I was just borrowing them from a friend.
Are these lpl mount?
These are EF mount.
these set is not color balanced ,,, 50mm is way greener as the 19mm
