I met red buttons in the jamaican airport in the early 2000'S he was the only one in the first class line. I ran up and said hi, he was so nice, he let me take a picture with him, and he carried his own luggage, a really down to earth and super nice person!!!
It is so obvious that Dean and Red had a very special relationship. It is beautiful to watch. Dean cannot control his laughter. Total respect for each other.
I never missed a Dean Martin or Friars Roast. No egos here. Just pure laughter. All done without one swear word in the dialogue. This was a time when everybody could take a joke. To bad it died with these true comedians. You can see the respect they had for each other. The day the comedy died.

He may never have had a dinner or a roast but at least he got a compilation ... forever to be remembered. Very funny in a brilliant way with no hindrances. They had some air of freedom around them. It just tells you how lovely it was back then. How did we get here?
I was helping a photographer friend at the Friars Club during the early 2000's when they were honoring Phyllis Diller and saw Red Buttons perform his 'Never Had a Dinner' routine live. He was quite hilarious with his act. In addition to seeing Mr. Buttons, their were other Hollywood alumni such as Milton Berle (just before his death), Sid Caesar, Carl Reiner, Rob Reiner, Tony Martin and the lovely Cyd Charisse to name but a few. A moment in my life I will never forget.
Oh before woke, what a wonderful world it was. No more Uncle Ben, no more Aunt Jemima. Both in my mind did not insult blacks. We lost Uncle Remus too from Disney film son of the south--all gone. A wonderful movie.
Got in an elevator with my husband and the late great Red Buttons at a resort hotel in the Poconos many moons ago! He was just as funny off stage as well as on stage!
Red Buttons was a comedy genius. He was one of a kind that could bring laughter through quick wit. The greatest accomplishment that a comedian can bring to the table is one that strikes real humor without being obscene. That is very difficult and unheard of anymore. This is why Red was one of the best.
How far we've fallen. This is comedic brilliance. If just one of these jokes aired today we would have 24/7 breathless hysteria of racist, sexist, insensitivity on CNN.
I remember watching these roasts. I was allowed to watch them with my parents since I was only 13 or 14 years old in the 70's. I still laugh so hard my stomach hurts. 😅😆
Too many miserable people in this country is why! Nobody got offended when he was talking about black people , Wilt , Freddie and Sammy were cracking up!

Amelia Earhart, who once said, "Stop looking for me! See if you can find my luggage." 🤣🤣😂😂 Dean's uncontrollable wheezing/struggling to breathe exacerbates it all the better!
He gets pretty hysterical in the Dan Haggerty roast, too. I love the part where after Red says "Moses," Dean just deliriously cries out, "First naaaaaaaaaaammmmeeeeeee! FIRST NAME!!!!" and then they both say "CHARLETON!" and Dean starts weeping from laughter, lol
It’s so easy to watch Red Buttons for an hour. This was 1977 and Dolly Parton just sang during an NFL halftime wearing a Cowboys cheerleaders outfit and totally nailed it. Way to go Dolly!

I was born in 1963. Why does that matter? I'll tell you why. I was able to see ALL of the greats, most of them in their prime. That's just Movies, TV and Comedians. From 1968 to 1978 there was the greatest output of music, ever. We didn't need to hear a bunch of F bombs and other curse words in order to have a good laugh. We used to look forward to these Roasts when they aired on TV. Even if some of our favorites were getting a little long in the tooth like Jimmy Stewart, George Burns, Uncle Miltie; at least we had a chance to see them in this environment. Laughing and having a great time. The two Roasters who mostly broke up Dean Martin were Foster Brooks and Red Buttons. This is Treasure. Gold. You'll never see this again. Was it better back then? Maybe not, but then that is my only reference. I hope young people can get into these old clips. Thank God for RUclips and the internet.
