@@DakotaRaymond1999 true it is forgotten, but that’s more Chrysler’s fault than anything because they never advertised it anywhere and never made a special “sporty” trim level for it and other than the tiny badge on the lift gate below the V8 emblem there’s no signs anywhere except for under the hood and the VIN that a WJs got the HO overlands are more for luxury. And plus you can get that engine in a limited (my 02 limited WJ has that engine)
This truck had road presence. At the time there was nothing else on the road like it. It was big, beautiful , a head turner and fast. When one of these pulled up next to you at a light. It would literally ruin your day. Because you knew once that light turned green, you weren't going to catch it. The new ones are nice and more refined. But there's just something about that generation SRT that had a certain je ne sais quoi.
The first high performance Grand Cherokee was the 1998 5.9L ZJ. I owned a 96 5.2L and almost purchased a 5.9 but ended up getting a regular Cherokee with the bulletproof 4.0L. Still regret not getting one back then as they're impossible to find now.
I had one of these from 2010 to 2014. This review is spot on. Disgusting interior, but Holy Bleep was it fun to drive. Amazing sound, amazing acceleration. Very capable in the turns…. and the sound.. oh Lawdz.
And that’s why it’s incredibly easy to steal an SRT product. Too bad. You should see the numbers on how many vehicles made by dodge are stolen in just one month.
The interiors weren't as bad as they were in the Daimler era though, the German side of the company was squeezing every penny they could out of the American side and it's why the merger failed
Yep, they are the original badass SUV and love that 6.1 hemi. I appreciate that he showcased it, but totally left out the Challenger when he was talking about the various vehicles that were SRT8s. He mentioned the charger and 300, but forgot about the Challenger and is the coolest of them all. They started making them in 08 and 2010 was the last year they offered the 6.1 hemi, then began using the 392 in 2011 and was the inaugural yr for it
Yeah, the 2008-10 Challenger SRT8 is legendary. That 372 cu in 6.1L HEMI is literally the perfect amount of power. Something about them that gets me high unlike any other Challenger. Even prefer them over the Hellcat and Demon.
@@MAAtx I'm 100 percent with you, who the fuck is this guy? Anyway I didn't realize untill you pointed it out that Doug hasn't posted on his second channel in 2 months. What happened??
I have this exact jeep (same year, color, and stock with only a Mopar Intake) best vehicle I have ever owned. Headroom is poor for tall drivers, but that V8 has a way of making you not care about the negatives. Totally agree with your review.
Yes, I had one of those with the 'upscale' Orvis Edition with extra, well, floor mats and a spare tire cover with Orvis written on them. Also, it had a factory 2-inch suspension lift which were spacers and a special 'Off Road Edition' sticker in the left rear window. I kept the spare tire cover to have a back pack made from it. Also, they had a hood scoop. Neat!
I still have my 2006 Jeep GC. The hood has styling reminiscent of a Jaguar with the way it slopes down and curves to cover the headlights. The styling is nice and clean - no fake scoops, flares, bends dents, huge grill (think BMW) or other overdone styling cues. It still looks good.
Btw! Doug missed something here. Srt8 Jeep were actually built in Austria and had a gearbox from G55 AMG. So this may be the reason why these cars were (and still are if you dont modify the crap out of them) quite well built and reliable. Also you can see that the key is similar to Mercedes-Benz cars of that era.
The WK SRT is an overlooked SUV that had all the other high performances SUV’s in the day by their balls. I remember being at the track after they came out and the booth announcer was laughing saying “well you can bring anything to the track folks, even Mom’s Jeep.” The Jeep proceeded the rip a high 12 and rape the Vette next to it. The booth announcer went ape shit.
Was rolling my eyes at the notification until I saw it was a first generation! New Mopar stuff is cool, but it's all hellcats at this point. This was truly unique for the brand when it came out.
The first time I saw a grand Cherokee srt8, I had no idea that they had made that model. I noticed it from 2 parking lots away. I could tell that it was factory stock but not the grand Cherokee I was used to seeing. I walked close to 100 yards just to see what it was. It was worth it.
I owned a brand new black 2009 SRT8 Jeep. I ran it at the drag strip bone stock with the paparr dealer temp plates on it. Ran 12.9 at 106!! Added a custom tune, Borla S exhaust and it ran 12.4's all day just smash the pedal to the floor hooks up and goes! Loved it
@@yungboicontigo9278 I understand but Dougs reference to being cheap(cost wise) are a little misleading, the starting price was 40k+, but the usual add ons got it to 45, then the popularity of them had dealers doing what they do best, stick ridiculous mark ups between 5-10k when they debuted. Nothing compared to Porsche prices but far from a cheap vehicle
After seeing him review this I am dying to see him review a Trailblazer SS, that's the only other *American* made SUV that could compete with this. I mean the thing had an LS2 in it!!!
Doug, this isn't the first time I've written, and I feel like I have to do it again, especially under this video. Look at the 1998 Jeep GC ZJ 5.9, the best of the 90s Jeep, the grandfather of the Jeep SRT8, but with much more attention to detail and quality! Yes, it is not as powerful, there was a Magnum 360, but how it drove, even in spite of the ancient transmission.
I remember trying to convince my dad to get this Jeep instead of a Chrysler Aspen when I was in middle school. I loved our Aspen but this is one cool a$$ Jeep
@@elichosen3931 Yeah, my dad did get the optional naturally aspirated 5.7L Hemi V8 in the Aspen in 2008 which was a nice smooth engine but I think it only produced around 380 BHP which is good but, the Aspen was a huge 7 seater family SUV. It was definitely built for comfort not speed but it did it well. I actually think a new Aspen with maybe a turbo V6, plug in hybrid or even fully EV like the new Hummer is doing, would sell well as competion for the new Lincoln Navigator and Cadillac Escalade
Haha same here my Dad was wanting to upgrade his 98 grand cherokee when I was in middle school and I was pushing him to get the SRT8 so bad 😂 Didn't happen 🙄
Decent review. No mention of All Wheel Drive, which besides the engine is the highlight of the car, and why it beats the SRT-8 Charger, 300, and Challenger 0-60 on the street any day rain or shine. Also, I think the interior is nice, and is 100 times better than anything made in the 90's (like my Full Size Bronco). Second thought: the interior quality is completely adequate, and probably what we should have. I'd certainly take this interior instead of the $20,000 price premium for the albeit nicer interior in the new Grand Cherokee. My home furniture isn't as nice as the stuff in new cars.
Finally you posted it. I was dieing when I saw the clip of you standing in front of this Grand Cherokee SRT8 while promoting Cars & Bids in another video awhile back. So happy you posted it.
The 6.1 HEMI doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. It’s an incredibly competent engine, moreso than the 392 when it comes to boost. Hopefully Doug will review an SRT8 Magnum some time soon!

I had the CRD WK grand Cherokee limited in the UK and although it only had 218 bhp same body style. The Jeep powerdrive ll traction system was absolutely EXTRAORDINARY! My kid used to slam it around the fields in the snow trying to get it stuck.. it was a beast. Even with half the SRT's power it was plenty fast.
Every one of these SRT8s always make a grown man show their inner child’s excitement
IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS DAY FOR A LONG TIME
The first high performance Grand Cherokee was the 1998 5.9L ZJ.
Very capable in the turns…. and the sound.. oh Lawdz.
How was the engine reliability, thinking about getting one but most are well past 70k miles
@@danieldavidovich1573 I found 1 with 68k miles and it’s $30k😭 and I really want it

This is what Chrysler has been doing since the 60's: Throw a huge engine into a base model vehicle, cheap as chalk car and call it a day.
And i loved the fact that they barely ever cheaped out on the drivetrain ..i always preferred a better and strong drivetrain over a fancy interior
'68 Dart Hemi with everything delete. I'd love to have one.
And that’s why it’s incredibly easy to steal an SRT product. Too bad. You should see the numbers on how many vehicles made by dodge are stolen in just one month.
Lol wasnt base model at the time
The interiors weren't as bad as they were in the Daimler era though, the German side of the company was squeezing every penny they could out of the American side and it's why the merger failed

Mercedes refused to let their lower tier Chrysler Division have the nice stuff. That is 100% a fact.

I have this exact jeep (same year, color, and stock with only a Mopar Intake) best vehicle I have ever owned. Headroom is poor for tall drivers, but that V8 has a way of making you not care about the negatives. Totally agree with your review.
"What if they put a big V-8 in a Grand Cherokee?!"
Hell yes, we did it in 1998 with the 5.9 Limited
Doug doesn't know about that, he only knows about cars in the last 15 years
18:00 yes
I had one and it was awesome, sounded like a beast.
When you realize that you are the middle-aged balding guy that Doug is referring to..

There's just something sexy about those WK1 SRT8's
The moment we have all been waiting for
I owned a brand new black 2009 SRT8 Jeep. I ran it at the drag strip bone stock with the paparr dealer temp plates on it. Ran 12.9 at 106!! Added a custom tune, Borla S exhaust and it ran 12.4's all day just smash the pedal to the floor hooks up and goes! Loved it
I love how dougs always astonished by back seat leg room in normal size vehicles while being freakishly tall
FYI it wasn’t “cheap”, there were markups when they first came out. It was marked up 5-10k
Yeah I remember thinking thats an expensive truck lol

The Aspen had the optional 5.7l correct?
@@elichosen3931 correct
@@elichosen3931 Yeah, my dad did get the optional naturally aspirated 5.7L Hemi V8 in the Aspen in 2008 which was a nice smooth engine but I think it only produced around 380 BHP which is good but, the Aspen was a huge 7 seater family SUV. It was definitely built for comfort not speed but it did it well. I actually think a new Aspen with maybe a turbo V6, plug in hybrid or even fully EV like the new Hummer is doing, would sell well as competion for the new Lincoln Navigator and Cadillac Escalade

I have never clicked a video so fast. Dropped what I was doing and watched this. I have been waiting for this

I own a 05 Grand Cherokee and the location of the seat memory gets annoying due to my knee occasionally bumping it
The 6.1 HEMI doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. It’s an incredibly competent engine, moreso than the 392 when it comes to boost. Hopefully Doug will review an SRT8 Magnum some time soon!
He'd spend at least 15 minutes bitching about the interior, even about things every other manufacturer did at the time.
