I prefer smooth panels, but there is something satisfying about oil on canvas. Like spreading soft butter on waffles. Nice texture with the roller on canvas.
Fascinating... Not only the painting, but also your thoughts about art and creation process are very accurate and things you said make this 9 minute so much more precious than every art classes I’ve ever attended. Thank you very much!
Tudor P maybe it’s because he’s holding the brush so like. Far away from the actually brush hairs. I know when I paint it’s hard for me to have control over my brush if I don’t hold it decently close to the base. Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t it just personal preference
That sandwich reference was the best. Thank you for that laugh. I love the painting a lot. It's really beautiful and creative. Wonderful use of colours in the skin and I'm the hair. I'd love to try oils but only got acrylics lol.
Try to use OMS to mix with the oil paint. oms = odorless mineral spirits , this will thin out the oil paint a bit to turn it from a peanut butter consistency to one of warm butter . You can also mix in a medium like linseed oil or sunflower seed oil , there are many mediums on the market that will speed up or slow down drying time of the paint , as well as give it a smooth texture and gloss or matte as it dries. Also learn what the different brushes are for , there are hard brushes and soft ones The hard ones are for erasing or making corrections ,as well as texture strokes , and the soft are for applying paint and blending . Make sure you dont mix oil paint and acrylic paint together ever , they are antagonists and they hate each other . I hope this will help , I'm happy for you it's a wonderful world to get lost in once you get the hang of it , You can create whole worlds .
Thank you so much for this advice, I am new to acrylic and oil but I am experienced in watercolor. I’m really excited to start getting to know new mediums.❤️☺️
It's not a waste! You have to make a lot of shitty art before it gets better, and even when you are good you are gonna make a lot of shitty art! But that doesn't mean it's useless :)
This is the most elaborate explanation and tutorial of oil painting I’ve ever seen, the first video of yours that I saw, just subscribed... thank you so much keep up the good work ❤️
Thanks for this informative structuring process to difference between panel and canvas painting. I tried to tell others there is such a specific feel as to the two, as the canvas lets you in on creative natural happenings, most happy mistakes you can correct too! Lol. Easier than on board for sure. I like how clear your voice is and calming with showing patience; not easy to do both right?
Goodness gracious, this is amazing! I find it difficult to paint skin because I have a tendency to use (like, roughly) 3 colors. As a result, there’s no dimension and I’m just disappointed in the end result. I love to see how different artists use colors that most people wouldn’t even think to use to cast shadows and give off the illusion of “real.” I don’t know what this technique is called or if it’s just part of color theory, but I’m trying to implement it into my art more. So thanks for this, it’s really helpful!! 🖤
I'm completely new to oil painting, my highschool art teachers refuse to teach it or anything really, and I just have... a few questions. 1. Why do artists choose these exotic sounding oils over turpentine? Safety? 2. Why would one choose to stretch a canvas themselves? What are the benefits? 3. What is the proper size to paint a face? True to scale?
1. Using different oils and mediums can affect how the oil paint looks and dries. Usually when you buy a tube of oil paint, it has the consistency of peanut butter and takes a while to dry. If you add a medium like linseed oil, it thins out the paint and gives it a thinner and glossier look. Plus, the oil helps speed up drying time. 2. It could just be a matter of preference. Personally it's cheaper for me to buy a canvas roll and prepare it myself for painting. However, that doesnt mean you shouldn't use canvas boards or panels it's totally fine! 3. There really isn't a proper size of canvas to paint a face, again, it comes down to preference. I find it easier to paint on larger surfaces but so long as you get thr practice and/or desired outcome of your painting it should be fine. Hope this helps!
Hey, just found out about your channel yesterday and just wanted to say that I love it so far! You're an amazing artist and I like the way you create your videos. Thanks for sharing it with us :)
... it’s very interesting to observe your process... I especially appreciated your comment regarding not letting your reference material control you, ... but rather to paint what you know, not what you see. It looks like you started out by transferring your image with a tracing ... when you work on larger scale surfaces, do you utilize a projector to cut down on issues with getting the placement and proportions correct... ?
Hey, I love your videos. I just had a question: Can you please tell me why you prefer to begin your paintings on a white surface instead of a toned one? I was always taught to tone my canvas and I am curious to get your thoughts on this. Much appreciated.
I'm so glad you explained why this painting needed to be painted on canvas. Also glad you explained that doing the same painting on panel would be frustrating for a beginner. I recently bought some oils and have been practicing on panel and getting poor results, so perhaps I need to switch to canvas and try again. On a separate note, I noticed you repainted the left eye several times and I never saw that area get muddy from multiple layers of paint. Are you letting the area dry between these repainting sessions, or is it alla prima? Thank you again for taking the time to create these videos...they are helpful, entertaining, and inspiring!
Very 80s Graphic design style , do a wall mural in NYC, it would look great. Like a romance novel cover or a film poster for a spaghetti western. I know you can do portrait realism which is the pinnacle of figure reproduction and your style is unique.
Your dialogue is very effective in regards to maintaining viewers attention, this is the first video of yours that I've seen, the kaos you create by applying swaths and dabs of light colours onto almost finished picture may indicate what?
Wow, you are really good with tones, congratulations! In the video it seems that the first layer of color is already dry before moving on to the background processing, do you confirm? Thank you very much for sharing. 🙂
When I'm creating a background, I find that thinking about the foreground is equally important. If the main focus of the painting is really dark, I'd go with a light colorful background or vice versa. If the background is soft and blended, the focus is usually something with harsh angles and minimal gradients. I find that the perfect background is usually a combination of contrasting elements that dont distract from the focus, and instead lend themselves to make said focus pop even more than it would by itself. All that being said, it's important you find your own style. Maybe you could pick up some cheap acrylic paints and cheap canvases and just practice making backgrounds, without fear or messing up a painting? Canvas is washable when you use acrylic. Doesn't look pretty, you'll have to recoat and stretch it if you wash it, but it is doable.
HI! I really love your art, but I was just wondering why, when you do portraits, that you put splashes of paint (or whatever you call it lol) on their face after you finish the painting. I have seen a lot of oil paint artists on youtube constantly do this in their work. is this a trend? does it have a special meaning behind it? or is it just for aesthetic purposes? Hope to get an answer soon! keep up the great work😊
Hi Alpay, try to watch all of your videos, I really enjoyed this one especially. We all can learn so much from these. I just finished watching your Boba Fett video and noticed there weren't any comments available for that video, did this happen for a reason or just an oversight? Thanks for taking the time to do these!
Glad you like them. I just started to make narrated videos a few weeks ago... so all the old ones are video only. But luckily a new one is dropping tomorrow 🙌

Great!!!Now I just need paint, brushes, canvas, and learn to paint!!!
Hey i have a doubt, I always paint with the canvas/paper in the table, is there any advantages in painting in vertical?
the way you paint skin tones is so inspiring

Ha, well... it’s not impossible, just harder :)

I’ve been gifted oil paints but I have nooo idea how to use them, so I’m just going to watch all the videos I can find
