You think you current car petrol doesn't have a ton of shipping involved in it? Also there is more pollution with oil than just transportation. Drilling, Transporting, Pumping, and Refining - which is also responsible for many of the same issues EV's are being blamed for.
What about all the coal fired power stations that China are building to meet the demand they have created for EVs (by banning ICE cars in China, not because people want EVs)? What about the millions of tons of earth that have to be moved to mine the lithium? What about all the scrappage that has to be processed from millions of perfectly good cars that are being scrapped? The extra equipment and precautions that fire departments and so on have to take to cope with potential EV fires? The infrastructure for all the chargers that will be required? And 100 other issues that are never taken into account.
I agree that the EV drivetrain is generally very good and for me an owner of a BMW i3 which does have buttons and knobs :-) I love it. I dont have any range anxiety with its 160 real world range as I rarely travel even 100 miles in one go. However the charging infrastructure is improving massively and the costs are reducing thanks to Tesla providing a competitive environment. Also Tesla have opened up a large amount of their excellent chargers to non Tesla's. It typically takes less than 30 mins to charge this older EV but because its battery is only 38Kwh and its light its very efficient. For me it fits my usage profile a treat and to charge it up at home which I do every 2 weeks costs £3 ! Then there's that 0-30 in about 2 sec that they mentioned, but overall its just a quite efficient and now low cost car.
I have a Model Y Performance in Germany, I have a great experience buying the car. Tesla contact me and arranged everything and ensure everything i need to register the car arrived on time. I have had 1 service appointment until now. I showed up, everything went as planned, they gave me a 80€ Uber voucher to go anywhere I during the wait time. Also...you can open the charge port on the main screen without "going into the menu". The seat heating can be adjusted via voice assistance. How do you even have range anxiety with a Model Y max range with 600km WLTP range? Also..the issue with the brakes seem to be a first gen issue. I have had my car for over a year and no sign of rust. The amount of hate for something new and unknown is frankly astonishing. Everyone should be able to drive what they want. You can also just turn off Regen and drive it like a normal automatic with 2 Pedals....
China is in fact investing massively in clean energy production and EV manufacture. The USA has to use massive trade tariffs to stop Chinese EVs flooding the US market with the cheap small EVs we are asking for.
not true that every other brand has one pedal driving by default, BMW don't, it's there but you've to use a button to select it (well it's actually the gear selector). Would have been interesting to do the same debate with a say a BMW i4 owner
Good to see you back and making films about cars rather than some of the stuff that you got side-tracked with. I thought some of your early car videos were some of the best actual car reviews available. Then things went weird for a while. I can't stand EVs, but this was something I was able to watch and appreciate the discussion on.
I want buttons in my cars. I think there is space for both EV's and ICE. I had range anxiety with the one electric car I've owned so far. Glad it didn't come to blows over the debate. Love the channel
If you're able, the solution is to have 2 cars. For my white goods, boring washing machine car I have a hybrid Outlander which with only a 20 mile EV range has actually done 1/3 of its 75,000 miles on electric. I have a Caterham Seven for a fun driving experience.
In reality developing countries and the whole world will have to rely on fossil fuels for at least the next 50/75 years. Setting mandated targets in the UK is total madness. Apart from being catastrophically expensive, it will not make any difference to world CO2 levels.
Why so? Developing countries are also starting infrastructure with renewable energy solutions, which generate electricity, not petroleum. Catastrophically expensive? Not sure what you're referring to, but NOT dealing with human caused climate change is the greatest catastrophe we face.
Each to their own but in my opinion you should really have been talking to an EV owner who bought one without a 100% business incentive to purchase, if you can find one. I'm all for choice and not for government stipulating the car supply chains as they are doing at the moment or else punishing the manufacturers with fines if they don't comply.
EV enthusiast here - used to be a petrol head, turned into a car enthusiast. Don't hate ICE cars, just accept we need to transition over to EV's for the vast majority of vehicles - especially domestic cars. No incentive to sell anyone anything - nor any other agenda other than trying to myth bust anti-EV propaganda so people can really make an informed choice of the pro's and con's of any car.
I've had an ioniq 5 for two years, had a Kona EV before. Best car I've ever had. I don't think I can go back. As long as you have off street parking and can charge at home.. Its a no brainer.
Cold hard truth, EV or ice car are suted to different people and needs and budgets and capabilities like being able to charge at home. But forcing people into ether by legislation is very bad and probably will destroy the western car manufacturer and car market. There is so many issues forcing people and sole traders and so on into EV’s. As I’ve always said if you want a EV enjoy but don’t force people into it.
Ive got a hybrid ioniq about to order a new car today btw, and ive never gor on with the one pedel (or level 3 regen), after 3 years i still cant judge when to let off the accelerator, as as a driving fan, im programed to let of and break when i want, but im forever letign iff to early. So i have regen off, and it allows you to coast, govign you a proper driving feel. Im going to try a cupra born today, that is ment to be a good ev drivers car.
Nothing wrong with evs they are great for some people. They my parents brother and wife all have one. They like them. But it's useless to me when I lots of very long journeys to the top of Scotland. They should not be forced on us. If they are so great they will naturally take over from petrol.
buttons in the car is an EV problem. the cost of the drive train means less money to spend on the rest of the car. hence everything through a touch screen cuz its cheaper. its not minimalistic cuz its stylish... its because its cheaper.
Personal transport is Personal transport. An EV provides that. Many non tesla brands will give the driver very similar driving experiences as their ice models. Tesla are a single brand manufacturer and only offer a Tesla experience, which is not for everyone including ev converts. We are many years away from there being no ice vehicles. Like all new directions, it will take a long time. Only worry about it when you have to.
The EV guy gets it, so shipping will be next. So will planes, I'd say cars is the starting point, this will drive the cost of 🔋down and then other industries will electrify. Also China is building loads of hydro electricity, they have gone near fully electric in the new energy vehicles. They have to cut pollution it's killing em. So they are less a problem then they are being "billed as" what ice owners don't get is you won't have an earth to drive Ur V8's on, we are not doing this for the 💩 and giggles. It's hopefully to stop the weather going insane. I think we are too late and we went past the point of no return 10 years ago. But hopefully I am wrong and 6% is a good start, add in solar, wind farms, wave energy. And all the zero point energy the government is hiding, we could yet turn things around. And we definitely have to try, idk if you have kids but it's the past few generations that have messed things up, I would argue you should sell the Audi and do your bit, be a force for change not dragging Ur feet. Fyi you can charge Ur car at home each night, who needs hundreds of miles a day most days? An EV charging on cheap home electric on a night is a plus for most people, no more petrol stations 😂 idk me I think electric power is cleaner, faster and with each wheel being torque vectored, sweet 😂❤
He didn't say they were 'shit', he said 'EV and Tesla's in particular are appliances, which is true, they are very efficient computers on wheels with zero 'petrolhead' appeal. Meaning they are built to maximise manufacturing efficiency and with very little consumer tailoring (i.e. the same car (3 or Y) for every market. Only the Cybertruck has a quirky look and that is 'Brutal cyberpunk' and very much a US truck scale. Even the refresh after 8 years of the model 3 is very boring from an aesthetic POV but the software is excellent hence the appliance analogy.
It does not matter if the cars are better or worse. Faster or slower, souless or full of passion. People have made their mind up well in advance, and then its just a matter of justifying it later. No matter what side of the fence you are, you can't deny there has been an orchestrated anti EV sentiment/agenda being pushed on us for a long time now. It you cant help but have a negative feeling about Electric cars forced on you.
The real reason they have to ban ICE is because EVs are not progression and so the masses will not buy unless with continuous gov incentives. Why sit in an appliance that's taking recordings and not a good free wheeling driving experience with jerks and shakes
Let me get this straight......so the chap bought the Tesla because of the tax break and without the tax break he probably wouldn't have bought a new car because of the depreciation......and when asked what he likes about the Tesla he says "it's a new car" as one of his likes.......fast forward a couple of years from now and it's no longer a "new car" but it is still a soulless drive..........in X years time he has to start considering his next car but there won't be tax breaks so he will presumably either choose to keep going with this Tesla or buy something else second hand but presumably he will stick with EV so the "high point" of his EV experience will be this "new" Tesla and everything there after will be a lesser driving experience.......or he has to spend lots more money.
You get ripped off in the UK with your new EV prices and fast charging costs. In Australia the base Model Y is 30K pounds on the road. The MG4 is currently 16K pounds on the road. Fast charging is 30-40p per KwH and 40% of homes have rooftop solar so charging for free is possible during the day. For most people, EVs are a no-brainer and they're only going to get better and cheaper.
Clarkson was correct, they were "white goods". As dull as dishwasher! However, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N is a real track ready weapon. With it's fully adjustable suspension and practical hatchback layout. I recently borrowed a Tesla Model Y, and I own a BEV. The Model Y is not a patch on the Hyundai... From it's dreadful suspension to it's poor iPad interface. I wasn't impressed. Even the Tesla insurance was more expensive than the Hyundai.
I like buttons levers ect thr more manual the better my 1997 Toyota Hilux is totally analog 100% even has a carburator no computers or modules manual windows but l really like my Hilux l enjoy driving the Hilux changing gears l actually feel apart of my Hilux feel every bump and lift the accusatory and the Hilux slows down and sometimes comes to a complete stop without using the brakes up a bit of a hill and l can go down a slope in fourth gear and not brake and maintain the speed limit
People are too bother about nothing. EV, ICE, Hydrogen, all of them are welcome, specially if they do not pollute. Manual cars are fun in the UK’s twists countryside roads but horrible in stop and go traffic. EV are really easy in traffic. Some people like mechanical cars some people like computers on wheels.
Tesla is an extreme example of a car without buttons. Try a Hyundai or Kia, they make EVs with buttons and knobs. It's also about air pollution which kills 40k a year in the UK.
The better car to answer Clarksons issues is the Ioniq 5 N. It is a much more involved drive and has gears and noise (fake but as Cargurus Auz says the idea of fake boobs is terible but everyone that has experianced them loves them!).
Not every EV is a Tesla. I won't buy a Tesla because of the "everything on one screen" issue, but there are plenty of EVs out there that don't have that approach.
The 4.2 diesel is more responsible for the climate change. Suddenly acceleration is not important as EVs are better than polluter cars. 155mph so what - where are you doing that in UK? Now that EVs are cheaper, then the 'too dear' argument fails. You laugh that the model Y cost 50k just your 17 year old Audi cost 67k when new - adjust for inflation and it is dearer and costs a fortune to run and service. Yes your old Audi was 4.5k but face it, it is an old banger that has the risk of a massive maintenance bill and breakdowns daily. EV servicing is next to nothing and overnight charging is free (for me and anyone who selects the correct tariff.) Range not enough - can you drive more than 400km/4 hours without the need for food or a comfort break? The driving experience? be more specific - do you mean smoother, more comfortable, less noisy? Yes? The EV wins. Most EV haters are less clever, hence less well paid and they cant afford an EV so it is an academic challenge for them.
Changing all the World's cars to EV only addresses 1 - 2% of Carbon emissions not 6% however more than half the World can't change to EV''s (on current EV technology) for many many decades to come. The wars/conflicts that have started in the World in the last 3 years have generated way more carbon than can be saved from moving to EV's and 3 years ago there was no thought about how much carbon might be generated from new conflicts that hadn't yet started. Call me when the World's military switches to EV's because it aint gonna happen.
"Its a lot of car for your money"! The man on drugs was brought to earth by the response. "Its a lot of money for a car" The annual depreciation on that EV is 3 x the value of the Audi. The Tesla is 3 x the cost of my new Mazda 2 D. I'd need to drive my Mazda 600,000 miles to save the capital cost in the UK. I'd have to drive 2,000,000 miles where I live because fuel is very cheap.
You Mazda 2 is hardly a like for like comparison. You can lease an ID3 77kwh (300+ miles) Match pro performance for £280 a month (3yrs 12k miles) if you do 12k miles a year youll save circa £150 a month in petrol. so youd need a Mazda 2 for £130 a month which your wont get. EV's are as cheap as ICE now if you include running costs.
Not necessarily. I own a used BMW i3 I bought at 3 years old for 24K which would have been a 40K car from new. These you can pick up now for less than 15K with low mileage and excellent batteries because the car has a very good Battery Management System meaning the battery will most likely last 20 years. So for lets say 15K you get a carbon fibre car that's light weight, 0% rust as there's no ferrous in the build and a decent range of 160 miles. It costs £3 to charge up at home on an EV tariff. However I do agree that its best if you have a driveway so you can charge at home. I'm just pointing out that 50K is not the figure its way lower for a decent used car.
Interesting thoughts on on pedal driving. Our 2024 hyundai kona has 4 levels of regen from fully off to fully on. Fully off on motorways and A roads to fully on around town makes the car drive how i like it.
Interesting video, but the thing you EV guys don't seem to get is that you're NOT saving anything in terms of emissions. If China are going to be producing most of these cars, which seems to be the case, and they're building more coal fired power stations to run it all, you're making the situation worse, not better. I don't think the vast amount of earth that has to be moved to mine the lithium etc. has been properly taken into account, the vast amount that is going to be needed, all the extra electricity that is going to have to be generated and so on, overall history is going to show that you're very likely to have made the environmental situation worse, not better. A simple example is they have just closed the last UK steelworks, which ran mostly off nuclear powered electricity. That steel will now be made in countries where they're using coal powered stations, so while the local air situation might improve very, very slightly, you have ADDED to the overall emissions issue by moving the problem elsewhere. You can't do that and expect it to work when it's a global problem. Looking at the bigger picture, it seems to me that EVs are a step backwards, not forwards.
The smelly fish analogy used is flawed because an EV owner chooses to eat the smelly fish but the people offended by the fishy smell are those closest to where the electricity is generated. I am not opposed to EV’s I just want some honesty on the topic. It would be more positive for the environment for the government to force us to just replace ourselves (2 Kids per couple) instead of being so proud of our own genes that we have to add to the worlds pollution by making extra sets of arms. But you don’t win votes by doing that so it will never happen. Bashing big business is also not really being honest about who really pays if you are successful at that. Without big business making the stuff that we all demand we will all be sitting under a tree wondering why we are getting cold and wet.
"we will all be sitting under a tree wondering why we are getting cold and wet"...do what they do in Africa...just burn the tree...Oooops...forgot no rain there...
2 kids per couple??! Where have I heard that before? If anything, this country needs to have more children, to ensure economic and pension security without having to import it.
The reality of living with an ICE vehicle or Hybrid that nobody talks about !! ICE or Hybrid Owners are at Risk of developing LUNG CANCER that is right LUNG CANCER from tail pipe emissions. I know what you are saying "it won't happen to me" but if it does it's to late. I am not worried about a EV fires that's what insurance is for but insurance can't fix your health
I bought an EV because I don't do long journeys anymore and charging at home off peak saves me a fortune.
YOur brother is a sensible well educated man that sees the bigger picture.
40% of all shipping is moving oil and gas. Changing to EV's will have a massive impact on shipping polution.
What is the origin of that statistic? (I read it or heard it somewhere does not count)
You think you current car petrol doesn't have a ton of shipping involved in it? Also there is more pollution with oil than just transportation. Drilling, Transporting, Pumping, and Refining - which is also responsible for many of the same issues EV's are being blamed for.
Shh!

He probably couldn’t find one. No private buyers are buying new EV’s.
Subsidies are BS! The tech has been around long enough if it was worth a damn, it would stand on it's on two feet!
Exactly. You and I basically paid for part of that Tesla. Level the playing field.
No one buys them without incentives.

Can always just buy a used one
You Mazda 2 is hardly a like for like comparison. You can lease an ID3 77kwh (300+ miles) Match pro performance for £280 a month (3yrs 12k miles) if you do 12k miles a year youll save circa £150 a month in petrol. so youd need a Mazda 2 for £130 a month which your wont get. EV's are as cheap as ICE now if you include running costs.
EVs are rubbish unless you own a house in a town and £50,000.
I’ve never driven a Tesla but I’ve been a passenger in one and that was bad enough. The seats and the ride is terrible. Makes you feel 🤢
I agree. I took an Uber recently and it was a Tesla, I couldn’t wait to get out.
The reason they can’t sell both is because if they do, most people will chose the ICE car because they’re just better.
2 boomers who don’t want to learn complaining about a new car not working in the same way as or costing the same price as cars from 40 years ago.
Boomer? You're older than me Sir. 😂 Thanks for the kinds words anyway.
