  • This video is about the Roanoke Trash Train, an operation of Norfolk Southern and several local Government agencies in the Roanoke Valley from it's conception in the mid 1990s. The train, as such, was the first of it's kind in the nation at the time. This program was originally produced in 1998 by Blue Ridge Public Television in Roanoke, Virginia. The Roanoke Chapter NRHS helped in the debut of this operation, during an outing of invited guests on the railroad to see the operation up close. This video is not for sale. This video is presented here for educational and historic purposes only.

The trash train service out of Roanoke ended a few years ago.

The Rail-hauled waste Solution reminds me of Bay Colony RR'S use of repurposed Boxcars to haul trash from Cape Cod to "SEMASS" an Incinerator/Boiler that "nominally" Generated Electricity as well.
Bay Colony's cars were much the same, the loading and tipping of the cars the same too. It started in 1989.
