Добавлен 16 фев 2021
The Roanoke Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society is a not for profit 501(c)(3) organization. First organized and chartered in 1955, the group went inactive in 1961. In the fall of 1967 some local folks got together and put together an organizational meeting and the new group was incorporated at the beginning of 1968
Our local organization has over 150 members and is one of the larger chapters of the NRHS in the country. Over the years, we have been a very active group, we operated excursion trains over a great deal of the eastern U.S. almost from our beginning in 1968. We have restored to operating condition a variety of passenger cars, freight cars and cabooses, as well as several vintage diesel locomotives.

After learning that the Norfolk and Western Railway was about to abandon the use of steam locomotives, he wanted to capture it all on film. His project started in 1955 and ended in May of 1960. He did this work all on his own time, using ...

A bit sad that they buffed their steam program up just to end it the next year.
So Good To Hear The Whistle Again
The Final Trips, Of Norfolk & Western 611,
Modern Cars From The Norfolk Southern Steam Program, Sold To The Western Maryland Scenic,
29:39 Thomas The Tank Engine!
I saw the first GP30's that NKP had when they first arrived. They felt like the future!
Nice to see more trains running.Keeps 100's of trucks off the road avoiding traffic accidents.😊
The trash train service out of Roanoke ended a few years ago.
Sad. Why? @@Roanoke_NRHS
61q was sad because she was being retired
1218 is muscular
611 always smiles at the camera
Now IF ONLY THEY WOULD SAVE AN SD70ACE,AND AN SD70 MAC,AND ANSD80MAC.
16:17 best whistle action i have heard
God imagine running long hood with one of these. Stuck running with a tank drivers' viewport for a window 😂😂
Glad that hi-nose 30 has been preserved. We had a former Southern hi-nose 30, 2572, on our line in 1992. She was short nose forward without duel controls. Good unit, probably razor blades now. Curious about the ex-NKP 30, 2907, shown in this video if she survived. I believe 900 is at the NKP Museum in Bellevue. I saw 2904, its cab anyway, at Pilot Brothers in Chicago in 1992. Also 2901, either at Pilot Brothers or the dead line in Bellevue awaiting dispo.
26 Rl brake I have run it
It's a shame when you realize how much railroad history has been taken from Roanoke. NS has moved the headquarters and most of the maintenance to other locations. The buildings that were "the Roanoke Shops" are gone. When you consider all the railroad history that Roanoke was a part of. And Roanoke had it all there in the city limits. Not much remains. My first trip to Roanoke was in 1982. As a young rail fan, the big sign that stood tall on top of the shop roof clearly indicated the location of the N&W rail shops. That sign still stands out in my mind. It was lit-up at night in red. It appeared to be as bright as a neon sign. I sure hope that sign was saved from demolition when the buildings were tore down. Does anyone know what happened to that sign?
The GP30 is my favorite locomotive no matter what railroad. Thank you for preserving this one!
Thank you God for your wonderful railfan memories Thank you for bringing her back ..Many God's Prayers for many more😮😢🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉😂❤❤❤
@roanokenrhs I would love to see a full uncut version of the cab ride in 611 going to Fort Wayne and as well going up the old fort loops in 1994. Thought it could be a fun thing to watch, there aren’t many cab ride video footage of 611 in the 1990s so it could be really cool to see.
The Rail-hauled waste Solution reminds me of Bay Colony RR'S use of repurposed Boxcars to haul trash from Cape Cod to "SEMASS" an Incinerator/Boiler that "nominally" Generated Electricity as well. Bay Colony's cars were much the same, the loading and tipping of the cars the same too. It started in 1989.
Much appreciation from a 1964 boomer that grew up with N&W literally behind my house picking up coal cars at Kentucky Carbon Coal Corporation... brings back fond memories of my childhood.
Good video
Enjoyed this video
What's the music at the end of the video?
Zacahry, that song is the 1990 hit song, "It Must Have Been Love" by Roxette. On the video it is performed by John Tesh who today hosts a radio show that is aired nationally on select radio stations.
Do you have any old Norfolk Southern Film? I’ve haven’t seen much.
Love it. I’m amazed by trains. I’m glad they decided to give this lady a new shot and keep her running.
What about cab heat for operation in the cold? I know there was no a/c.
Way cool. Most excellent!
Belview... I wonder if 522 made a run between Belview and Buffalo (via Cleveland). I wonder if I've seen this unit in action (i grew up in Lakewood, where the line had two tracks going through the city (and its 20+ crossings)?
If you lived on Norfolk an western trachs il Gaurantee its made a pass by an good chance you have saw it before
Thanks for your efforts keeping the NW alive.
Blow that wonderful beautiful locomotive whistle it always awesome to hear her whistle
5:21 Is that a Leslie RS5T?
09trainfan that or a normal S5T
Where can I see the 611 The Final Trips video they were talking about?
That toilet heater switch seems pretty important.
And saw her I did. In May of 2021 when I had the opportunity of a lifetime to run the mighty 61 at the NC Transportation Museum. A day I hope to tell my future kids about.
Great job guys!
Blow that whistle on 611 to let let know people know the she is coming to town
Well done on the upload.
I love the music used
This is a fantastic video and should have WAY more views.
Big praises!
LMBO! @22:22
Loved Big Blue...!!
What happened to NW 611 Old whistle.
If you’re talking about the whistle the 611 wore from 1991 to 1994, Preston Claytor owns it and removed both it and himself from the 611 group when the Spirit of Roanoke moniker was applied buying the 2014-2015 re-restoration, for the stated reason that the N&W never named its engines. Nothing but overzealous and petty purism if you ask me. I would state why I view that move as petty, but I’d rather not make this comment overly long.
well atleast they got her back doing her runs
They run like a 7.3 Power Stroke Diesel!
Then again, its a 2-stroke V16 turbodiesel...
I missed those days!
I love the sound of a unrebuilt 567D3 engine
But now 611 is back in service.
16:28 is it me or does the engine have two whistle handles?
Yes. A few British locomotives had two whistle levers as well.
It's sad when you realize how much of what still existed from his photos in 2007 no longer exists now. It would be neat to take photos at every single location to show how much all of them have changed over the past 60 to 70 years
