Fun fact about giving someone the finger: During the medieval times when an archer was captured and held prisoner, they'd cut off the archer's middle finger because that's what you draw back a bowstring with. So if an archer were to escape with their middle finger they'd stick it the air as a way to say "hey idiot, you forgot something"! And so, flipping people off was born
Fun fact: the middle finger was the finger one used to pull back a bowstring. So when archers got captured, they'd cut off their middle finger. If an archer was not captured, he or she would stick up their middle finger to be like "I got both of them still b*tch."

I can actually answer that middle finger one: In the 100 years war when English longbowmen got captured by the french, they’d cut off their middle finger as this was used to draw a bowstring, so, to taunt the french, Longbowmen held up their middle fingers, and the gesture just kinda stuck around
I actually know why the middle finger is offensive and this lives on my mind rent free. During the battle of Hastings ( France vs England) When archers were stolen as prisoners the chopped off their middle fingers so they couldn’t arch any more and a lot of the guards who guarded the cells used to point their middle finger at them to mock how they are useless. Now, to operate a Longbow, you need a Middle Finger (an Index doesn't hurt as well), so whenever one Army captured some enemy soldiers, they amputated their Middle Fingers, to end their bow-stringing career. Every once in a while, some captured soldiers escaped before this procedure could take place, and so to mock their captors, the escapees started waving their middle fingers at the enemy, in a "Look at what ye imbecils couldn't take from me! I shall kill a lot of thine soldiers with these fine limbs!" Ever since, the presentation of ones middle Fingers (or Middle Finger and Index in Great Britain) was interpreted as a symbol of frivolous mockery and dishonouring of ones adversaries.
*clears throat*. The 'middle finger salute' is derived from the defiant gestures of English archers whose fingers had been severed by the French at the Battle of Agincourt. Your welcome
Not... Quite right? It's, as far as I know, very close though. It's from the archers who managed to avoid getting their fingers chopped off (getting freed/escaping) because the chopping off of index and middle finger makes shooting a bow impossible (can't draw the bow anymore) so it was a 'fuck you, we still gonna kill you fuckers'. I think that finger chopping thing was actually pretty common with captured archers. As time went on, the index finger stopped being part of that gesture... Not quite sure why, maybe someone realised that you just need to chop off the middle finger to stop archers and switched to doing that?
@@solaridraconi6225 the index finger alongside the middle finger in the UK is still very commonly a swearing gesture alongside just the middle finger. 9:41 People say that the middle finger is rude because of wars, in which the bowmen would use that finger the most. Theres a legitimate reason why the middle finger is offensive having to do with torturing prisoners of war but im not gonna tell you so you have to look it up.
If im correct, in oldern days longbow men used their middle fingers to draw the bows. So when they were captured, their middle fingers were cut off. The long bow men used the middle finger to signify that they were strong i think
The middle finger being offensive started in the fourteenth century when English longbowmen used their middle finger to draw their arrows. The French were sick of fighting them, so when they caught one, they would cut off his middle finger and, so the middle finger being stuck upwards at you became a sign of disrespect

So in some war (I can't remember which one) a lot of the soldiers shot their middle fingers off, so other soldiers would put up their middle fingers to tease them.
*Yes, he told us this 4 years ago, and yes, I almost failed that exam.*
Fun Fact: the middle finger came from archers who would use there middle finger to fire. The enemy, when captured one, would cut there middle finger off for this reason. In retaliation the archers started sticking there middle fingers up when retreating from the enemy.

2:41 lol, that fits so well.
9:41 People say that the middle finger is rude because of wars, in which the bowmen would use that finger the most. When they were captured, that same finger would get cut off, and those who managed to keep their fingers stuck it up as an act of offense, almost to taunt it. I now resign back to the void.
That’s right

The middle finger being offensive started in the fourteenth century when English longbowmen used their middle finger to draw their arrows. The French were sick of fighting them, so when they caught one, they would cut off his middle finger and, so the middle finger being stuck upwards at you became a sign of disrespect

13:30 that actually has happened to me: I was having trouble with the safe cracking one, but the imposter actually asked me what I was doing, and told me how. They didn’t even kill me, they were just like “dude, you’re new, that’s like shooting a fish in a barrel.” Then I made a joke about a “bitch in a barrel” and I had fun. Things escalated from there.
