Why lightbulbs don't EXPLODE (explosion included)

  • I've never known how lightbulbs work completely. Why do they not pull all available electricity from the socket? It's nothing but a wire. No resistors, no chips, no nothing. Just a piece of wire in an inert gas filled enclosure. Luckily, my brother (pepijndevos.nl/) could explain it to me, so I could animate it for you.

    Just found your channel
    At the beginning I wasn't sure whether this was a shitpost channel (came from the short with the table) or an educational one.
    But holy shit, this is extremely underrated, everything is well written and understandably visualized

    I once was in a Physics competition where we built incandescent bulbs with pencil lead inside of a vacuum chamber. Our best attempts made one single pencil lead shine so bright that you couldn't look straight at it and it illuminated the entire lab significantly more brightly than the usual lamps. Sadly it burned out in under a minute. Good times!

      Since 2012 it has been illegal to sell certain incandescent lightbulbs in the Netherlands. Since then they have been adding more and more variants to the ban list. Our kids will think it is crazy that light came from a glowing wire!

    Power does not determine heat. Amperage does. That is why power transmission lines use such high voltages. With higher voltage, you can reduce the amperage while sending the same amount of power. This makes less heat and, therefore, reduces power loss.

    • @youssefbeltagy7465
      @youssefbeltagy7465 3 месяца назад +1

      Unfortunately you are wrong. In this context (resistors/wires), the power applied to the resistor is always converted to heat and light. For a simple resistor, the power is the voltage applied to the resistor multiplied by the current through it.
      What you are describing are power transmission systems. They are not simple resistors. Ohm's law doesn't cleanly apply to them and so the relationship between current, voltage, and resistance is not upheld. However, it would still be true that the power applied to the wires is converted to heat and light if we only focus on the wires.
      In fact, light bulbs aren't simple resistors either. They get hotter so their resistance likely increases. I expect light bulbs to initially draw a lot of current (if we assume power sockets are perfect voltage sources) and consume a lot of power. But as the light bulbs get hotter, their resistance would increase and they would draw less current and expend less power. This is a classic negative feedback loop. We would need an oscilloscope to test this, though.

    I am a bit confused. Why does the lower rated lightbulb blow up but the other doesnt?

    • @KnowArt
      @KnowArt  5 месяцев назад

      It's rated for low watts, which means that it has relatively low resistance, so when I plug it into the wall outlet, which has high watts, too much electricity is flowing through because of the low resistance.

    did it dieded?
    u know what? I have always wondered - if you have the wires going to a lightbulb and the lightbulb filament is also a wire, which short-circuits the ones going to the bulb, why does the filament get hot but the wires don't?
    can u ask your nerd bro about this?

    • @iurieysi9103
      @iurieysi9103 7 месяцев назад

      is this also just because the difference in resistance? the wires must be less resistant than the filament?

    • @KnowArt
      @KnowArt  7 месяцев назад

      nice question. I'm not sure exactly, as heat creation is a bit complex in the real world if you want to know it exactly. It's a combination of factors. How hot it gets, influenced by the amount of power and the resistance of the material, and how fast it can cool down, determined by heat conductivity, surface area to volume ratio, etc.
