  • New Mercedes G Wagen goes EV - Better than G63 AMG? Detailed First look G Class G580 EQ Tech. In this episode the wraps are off the production electric G Wagen, and Jonny Smith gets a deep dive into the full spec of this 4 motor, 300 mile range torque monster. Although it will sit just below the G63 AMG, the EV model (whose body and chassis are almost identical) promises far better off road ability and more torque than the twin turbo V8.

    As much as I applaud them for moving on, the elephant in the room is that the vast majority of buyers are just flash city types who will never use the vehicle off-road. It's akin to the JLR set who will actively drive in the middle of the road to avoid puddles and messing up the status symbol.
    I like EVs but I desperately wish more OEMs would provide small, light, city cars a la R5, to steer people away from the bullshit that a 3 tonne Chelsea Tractor is somewhat environmentally friendly. Especially given most people obtain them on a 3 year PCP plan. It's not encouraging responsible ownership

    • @billhill4479
      @billhill4479 Месяц назад +1

      Agree. However, it is the wealthy city customers that enable manufacturers to develop these cars . The technology then trickles down into more affordable models for the rest of us. Think about things like ABS brakes and airbags . Tech that was only in the most expensive of cars originally that is now standard in all cars. The battery technology that Mercedes has to develop to make the G Wagon even remotely practical will be fantastic in a small much lighter city car.

    • @drxym
      @drxym Месяц назад

      That's the same with most American SUVs and trucks. They were heavily promoted by automakers skirting emissions regs such that 99% of these things will never go off-road or do work in their lives. Instead some fatso will drive their enormous vehicle to go shopping. Imo trucks, SUVs, 4x4s should be classified as commercial or specialist vehicles requiring more rigourous inspections, insurance, tax to make them onerous to buy or own outside their supposed roles.

    • @Hix066
      @Hix066 Месяц назад

      @@billhill4479 I disagree, the mass market is where the development funds come from. Motorsport is traditionally the breeding ground for tech innovation. The HALO cars are rarely that profitable, but they serve to work for marketing. Hi Jonny. Your show is quirky but real interesting. Not sure what the market is for the 3T Merc G Wagon as its weight is a problem when it comes to range. I'm in Australia own a 1965 289W Muzzy & a 2015 Forester turbo & I don't know how many times I have driven on the empty line in the Muzzy or on the orange fuel light in the Subie. I live in the country so 200-300km daily is a regular occurrence. Charging locations are scarcer than rocking horse poo. Even If I run out of petrol, I can get to the closest petrol station get back to the car & off I go. An electric car would cause issues if those scenario's arose so that is a big reason for my reluctance to go electric car. I would be the perfect candidate for range anxiety. I love the idea of greater torque & power & the environmentally friendly emissions but there are other issues concerning the exploitation of developing countries that include uncontrolled mining (cobalt) & the high use of water (lithium). Mining & the refining of the materials used in electric cars have significant impacts on the environment, the very thing that is trying to be protected. History tells us this will occur (oil). These issues are not being discussed very much when talking about electric cars. Cheers

Yes it's still a work in Progress , especially on the infrastructure/cost of charging front.

Car manufacturers really should be focusing on smaller, lighter cars with smaller batteries that still achieve a decent range through efficiency. They may not be a profit machine but that shouldn't be the focus of manufacturers if the combined focus is reducing emissions.

It's cheaper to run and there's less maintenance? I don't care, if I'm buying a G-wagen then I'm rich and I can afford it so I don't care. The electric one is faster? I don't care, I'm buying a 2,5 tonne cube, if I'd want something fast then I'd buy Porsche and I don't think the electric one would that much better off-road because of all the additional weight and if you go exploring in the middle of nowhere the bigger range and the fact that you can carry fuel in jerrycans is a potencial advantage for the ICE one.

That said if you buy this car you prob dont care about running and servicing costs.
