Having the unit for 6 months, did the electrical tape mod 4 months ago and it worked great . Recommend find the video on using the Diagnostic error codes.
As I do 3D design, I am tempted to design a whole new filter system. One that fits better to stop lint moving around the filter unit, and also has a tighter seal around the actual filters to stop the issue as shown here.
I was going to have the same thing done. If you want to reach out, I’m pretty confident I have a good idea of what they would need to do without redesigning their chassis just the actual filter.
Knee high pantyhose. I slid them over the filter housing and carefully placed the filter back in the slot so as not to tear the hose. It seems to be working great at preventing lint from collecting on the coils.
Further testing has resolved almost 100% of lint issues on the Rails and the condensor after several additions of weather stripping in several key locations. This just confirms all of the locations causing the problems. If you have a location to send photos to, I will share them. I have tried to get the attention of GE through several attempts and unsussful in reaching anyone that is interested in the design failure.
Great video. I find that putting clear silicon sealant along the seams on plastic grid that holds the black foam filter, yields the best result for me. When it's time to wash the black foam filter, I can usually peel off the silicon sealant in 2 or 3 long strands. When it's time to reapply the silicon, I find that I have to wait a day for the silicon to fully cure. After each use, I tend to vacuum the entire filter cartridge then stick an extending Stiffer duster inside the filter compartment. With this method, I'm finding the lint inside the unit is almost nonexistent. Also, out of habit from my previous Maytag Maxima washer, I tend to remove the detergent tray, filter cartridge, and leave the unit door cracked open to prevent mold.
Great tech tips, shows that reliability is in insuring every little detail is addressed, such as what appear to be minor gapes in the lint filter really do cause issues after multiple loads. Hope GE can get on the fix ASAP!
Four months after purchase we were having the problems described. I tried the electrical tape fix and it worked! Still have a pending service call which we’ll keep since the tape doesn’t seem like a permanent repair and I’m reluctant to use RTV for fear of voiding my warranty. But for now our combo is working as it should again. Thanks Ben!
GE service sent us a replacement filter but the tape continued to work perfectly until we got the new filter and I’m keeping the old taped one as a backup. Tech also said the RTV caulk option was OK and would not void warranty.
Can't say that I'm noticing any buildup, but I only do 1 or 2 loads each week. Thanks for the info though 👍🏽 I'm really loving this machine so far - it's one of my most satisfying purchases.
I couldn't get the sealer locally so ordered it from Amazon to be here tomorrow. I did get the electrical tape and put it on the filter. On the second load I ran when I pulled the filter out there was a big blob of built up lint, etc. and I got that out. Thank you for your fix for the problem. When the sealer comes tomorrow I will take the tape off and use the sealer. The tape doesn't stay on well but is doing the job for today. Thanks again for your help. I got my machine in December and it works great, it was expensive at Home Depot and I want it to last. Will keep on top of cleaner. Bought a hose connector for my Dyson 8 and it will get most of anything out. Keep up the good work. Am subscribed. 😀
Hi Ben. Thank you so much for the teardown videos. I just fixed my GE all in one for the second time in one year. This time i bought the tiny spring tool for the door seal, since it seems like I'll be tearing it down again in the near future. I believe the blue coil lint buildup issue can be fixed by a garden hose, and a garden sprinkler essentially. The upper box with heat exchanger is sealed, and nothing but the blower motor thermistor is inside. Any water sprayed at the coils will only run back into the wash basin. You will need to check pump filter after every load for a few loads until it runs clear.
Had this machine for 4 months and even cleaning the lint filter after every load there is a significant amount of lint and hair clogging the blue condenser coils. There is now way to get to the coils to clean them. They should have made a way to easily access the coils so it could be cleaned every few months.
Agreed. I absolutely regret buying this combo. The drying time sucks. It hardly dries 5 pieces of clothes well. I spend 30 minutes a week trying to clean the filter housing unit. I'm thinking of buying a separate dryer and putting it next to this combo. I'm really upset. I hate this combo.
@@Kne2450 - honestly, if they made a vacuum brush attachment designed to clean the coils and the opening, it wouldn't be a big deal. The problem is that nothing off-the-shelf can get in there to clean it well.
The left side of the lint filter is also an issue. After 7 months of use I discovered a thick "lint cake" collected at the top of the duct that feeds warm moist air to the filter. This lint cake was about a half inch thick on mine until I managed to remove it with a flexible grabber tool and got about three handfuls out of there which was likely restricting air flow. Another thing that can happen is lint that falls into the filter track being continuously pushed back against the back wall until it prevents the filter from being fully inserted. This can prevent the micro switch that detects the fully inserted filter from being depressed causing the machine to bulk about fully fully inserting the filter. I think for the average user all of these lint issues will eventually lead to significantly reduce drying after a full year of continuous use unless this is conscientiously addressed on an ongoing basis.
I have this same issue. The left side is a nightmare of lint/hair/etc. And the buildup in the rear end of the screen track was blocking proper insertion. GE really should have provided a means to access this area for regular cleaning. I don't know how Ben's is so clean on that side?
We've noticed a decent amount of pet hair collecting in the back bottom and front top of the blue coils on our unit. I use the Milwaukee Air Tip flexible hose attachment with my little shop vac to clean them off carefully every once in a while. There's no telling how much is collecting farther down in the machine. We do a lot of laundry and we haven't noticed any increase in time yet, though.I think the hair is completely bypassing the filter. I don't think the little rubber gasket around the side of the lint filter gets a very good seal and it allows air to get around.
We're also noticing a lot of loose pet hair in the filter compartment and clinging to the coils. I was surprised by how much hair is *not* getting captured against the filter surface.
Miele has this all figured out and has for almost a decade. There are THREE lint filters on the residential models. Two traditional ones. The first catches 95% of the large lint, the second, directly below it catches the remaining 4.9% of fine lint. Then there is a two part sponge type filter directly in front of the evaporator coils to catch any super fine dust. I have 8500 hours on my T1 dryer and the coils are still clean. It is a great dryer and will have paid almost the entire cost of the appliance once it reaches 10k hours in energy savings vs an electric resistance dryer.
I'm watching carfully this unit but I think i'll wait for rev. 2... Seems a very good unit with one major flaw. It proves that the strength of a chain is limited to that of the weakest link...
You are right that there is a lint sealing problem, but the problem is not inside the assy. Lint screen already prevents lint getting through that cap so that is not the issue. The problem is that the assy itself doesn't seal well to the outer perimeter. So what needs to be done is to add extra seals around the filter assy so there is no air leakage around the whole filter assy. This is a bit tricky thing to do because the caps are not big and you still need to be able to remove and reinstall the whole assy to clean the lint filter, but it can be done. I did that to my machine and it fixed the problem. GE needs to redesign the addy and make sure that the new filter assy seals fully to the machine to prevent this from happening.
The person stated the problem is a little different from what was narrated in the video. And gave a possible solution however they did not apply and try that solution out
Ben, thank you for the amazing coverage you’ve given our GE Profile Combo in your RUclips video series. We enjoy watching your work and appreciate the commentary! For a number of reasons, we would not recommend modification of or additions to the lint filter. If you would please reach out to us via direct message on one of our social media platforms, we’d love to connect with you and provide more context. We look forward to talking with you and hope to hear from you soon! - GE Appliances
Ben, I informed GE that there are a lot of people modifying for attempting to modify this filter device. I had referenced a few RUclips clients to review. I know exactly what’s causing the problem, I would love to work with you on this, I truly believe this is a great machine, and definitely need some modifications. Even their algorithms for spin cycle are off and a few other items I’ve been taking note of in detail. Again, would love to have a conversation with you and or GE

Would be interested in a follow up after your convos with GE. I’m right at the edge about getting this machine and want to make my decision before the end of year sales end.
everything still seems to be running great. But Im not using it heavily every day yet@@danielcielmaee3642 . Theres a needy family that their house burnt down, and I am waiting for them to move in to gift it to them & let them run it for a year to see how it fares
I was waiting for this! There are so many videos of our European heat pump dryers full of lint, either due to shoddy design or careless customers. It will be interesting to see how the LG WM6998 handles this, assuming it uses a similar flushing system as their heat pump dryers.
That's good to hear. I suppose LG could use spray nozzles to wash down the fins - after all, water in- and outlets are given. In Europe, they use the condensate in their dryers to flush the front of the condenser. Bosch dryers will also wash the front of the evaporator.
I have been modifying what products I have used to work on the filter. I am almost done. If you send me an email address, I could send photos, I don’t have any RUclips videos and I’m not on any social media platforms. I wanted to be simple and clean as possible. It basically includes specific weatherproof, stripping in specific locations as well as an upgraded filter pad instead of the black cheap crappy one they supply. My testing has also confirmed that the replacement internal filter pad does not block CFM and will catch down .15 microns of dust / lint. My secondary filter should last well over 3 to 6 months, and you can just replace it or take it out and vacuum It. treat it like a car air filter. Also, you will still need to get an inexpensive vacuum with a long tube to collect any bulk lint that is accumulated on the left side of the track rails. I am also testing a back gasket on the rear of the filter so when you push it straight in it will block that rectangle indent and seal off the whole rear, so nothing gets by that way also. So far, I have had excellent results. My job on two units that I own is once a week regardless of what the machine tells me is to pull the filter out vacuum it vacuum the rails slide it back in good to go.
I too have the problem. We do two to three loads a day. Definitely getting buildup of lint on the coils. Cleaning it, it almost looks like dirt. GE tech support suggested I get a plastic cleaning brush that they carry for maintenance. I've ordered it, but it is but a patch for a manufacturing defect. The replacement foam filter is cheap, and available but the scaffolding is on back order until march. I'm thinking people are trying to glue the foam filter to the scaffolding. It's flimsy and if buildup occurs it would definitely flex and open a gap that lets the lint thru. That was what I'm going to try. I think the buildup gets so massive that the foam filter just bends and lets the lint thru.
I believe that the majority of the lint is passing through the top, bottom, and rear sides of the filter, not through those gaps in the plastic that youve sealed. The area you sealed comes after the 1st stage mesh filter, so there wouldnt be any large strands coming through there and it wouldnt be the source of the large lint buildups. 5:01 shows that lint is still coming through at the bottom after your solution. I dont think its a minor amount. When you insert the filter into the machine but dont push it all the way in, you would be able to jiggle the filter up and down. This indicates that there are air gaps along the top and bottom slots. My solution is to use foam window seals that have sticker backing. I stick ~1/4 inch thick foam along the filter ridges, and that fixed the problem for me. I'll make a video of this soon.

I modified the filter by using the 'red gasket' method as Ben showed. Made sure the lint was cleaned out as best as I could and then I reset all the accumulated error codes. The machine now works as expected. Time will tell if this is a good solution, but I think doing the filter fix AND resetting the error codes has got the machine reset back to its normal mode. Once again happy with the GE combo!
@@ER-D0C on or about the 3 min mark in the video Ben shows how he used a silicon gasket sealer to form a gasket around the frame of the filter. I used the product that he showed briefly on the screen, namely the Pro Seal Red Hi Temp RTV Silicon Instant Gasket. I let mine sit overnight before putting things back together and haven't had any problems since. I got mine through Amazon.
Ben, the problem is not around the cheap foam filter. It is the seal on the top, top rear and bottom of the entire filter. Not sure if you’ve seen the videos I posted.
I am getting large amounts of lint build up to the left of the filter. Other RUclipsrs are saying to add foam material (weather stripping) to all sides and end of the filter. When I shinned a flashlight in filter opening and to the left, saw big gob of lint. Yes I do clean filter and use brush to clean. I created a small tube to connect to my vacuum cleaner to suck it out after working it lose from side. A youtuber showed a hose attachment he got on Amazon Holikme 2 Pieces Dryer Vent Cleaner Kit, Dryer Lint Vacuum Attachment and Flexible Dryer Lint Brush, Vacuum Hose Attachment
I think it should be fine since it is gasket maker and not adhesive/sealant. just make sure you use the right product. gasket maker will not adhere the parts together and at the very least it should be easier to clean up and reapply if needed. definitely do not use something like silicone adhesive
I thought the GE engineer said lint wouldn't be an issue. Hmmmmm. But I don't see many people cleaning this machine as you suggested, when most people barely clean the filter at all. Glad you tested this! Just wish manufactures would do the same prior to releasing a product to market.
@@bluearcherx Actually he doesn't. I would think that the GE engineers are smarter than this RUclipsr and knew about this potential issue but the higher ups, wanted to keep the costs down. And if they didn't know about this issue, then they should have had this RUclipsr do the testing for them, to find it.
If they don’t provide a modified Filter Assembly, it can be a class action lawsuit. In my testing of “Less Lint”, I would look ke to see the testing they did. Amount of lint is the same, if not more in some cases. I think they pulled the wool "lint" over our eyes. By having such a large, flat filter, to us gullible humans, it looks like less lint.
Im excited about heat pump dryers, but it will always comes down keeping the condenser coils clean. It would be a great idea if the coils could easily be removed for cleaning.
Removing the coils for cleaning isn't likely since refrigerant lines go through it, but an access panel or removal cover that allows better access to them would definitely be a good idea. Cleaning those coils should be regular maintenance just like cleaning the coils on your home air conditioner or heat pump.

Does that gasket maker material stay intact with removal of that part of the filter housing for getting into that inner filter or would it need to be re applied each time the cover comes off? Thx!
I have this unit and noticed the same thing. I typically use an extendible microfiber duster to attempt to remove the majority of the dust that builds up on the coils.
Would you please be so kind to make some videos like these but for the lg washtower with heat pump? I understand it's not a commonly sold unit but it's been working well for the few months I've had it and want to know what kind of maintenance to keep the heat pump clean or take the machine apart if needed for deeper maintenance
I hope GE improves these units. I would like to eventually buy one but not with reading some of the problems people have experienced already. How about it GE?
I feel that the filter tracks are the problem. This is where the filter rides into the machine and sits. You restricted the air being pulled through the imperfections in the filter. If they put a gasket on the left side of the filter it would eliminate the ability for air to go around the filter through the small gaps. These small gaps will retain lint and when you slide out the filter the lint will loosen to fall into the coil.
You are correct. We have designed a upgrade kit to solve the issue and also a flushing process without taking the machine apart. RUclips: Home Guy Customer Service
The silicone you used how did the black filter housing not stick to that slilcone. Are you able to still remove the black filter without redoing the silicone everytime??
Thank you very much for your in-depth reviews of this GE combo unit. I was just about to buy one (vs. the LG). I think I will just wait until 2.0 and see if GE fixes these issues. I do about 2 loads a week, but I can't see why I should spend $2k+ for potential issues.
If you seal this second filter, how do you clean it? Also, the filter looks bass ackwards. The black coarse filter should come first and then the fine white filter I would think. Or is the air flow the opposite? But that makes not sense for protecting the coils.
Does the GE have an over head / coil spray bar like the Samsung? Also, could you spray down the coil through the lint trap door in the front? I would suspect the water would just rundown into the tub?
No, not at all. They have literally nothing to clean the coils. You could spray the coils from the trap door, but I am unsure if it'd clean them or just push the lint further into the system
How do you retrieve lint if it falls into that large opening to the left of the filter? I had a large amount built up above that but when I got it to break free, it fell from the brush into that boot. It looked quite large, so I'm worried that boot could become obstructed over time with lint falling into it during cleaning of the lint filter housing area. Should I be concerned? Easy to access/clean?
I put the silicone inside the outer edges of the part that comes out (that holds the black foam) and it's working great (I let the silicone dry for 24 hours before reassembling the filter, so that cleaning is possible)
What would you recommend between the electrical tape and the rubber gasket maker? The electrical tape seems a lot easier to apply. Also to remove in case you need to make a warranty claim.
Yeah it does, well it's more rubbery than hard. But he didn't address that and at some point you will want to remove the filter to do a deep water clean or even replace it with a new one. Then you have all this silicone to scrap off the filter frame. I'd rather use the electrical tape solution, but do wonder if it will leave a sticky adhesive on the frame.
@@Resist4 Thats what I was wondering too. And yeah with the high temperature, there will be some sticky residue leftover when you take the tape off for a deep clean
I had the same thought. I'd use tape but not black electrical tape due to the sticky residue it leaves behind. I'd use PEI tape, which is inexpensive high temp orange-ish tape commonly used to tape wires down to circuit boards in consumer electronics. Microcenter sells it and your electronics hobbyist friend will have some.

One video said to put 3/16 weather strip along top and back. Frost King was the brand. This would help air passing outside the filter. Self adhesive but don’t remove outer strip.
first load theough the machine and I did notice an issue I will address with GE. It got stuck on 1 minute remaining during drying for about 15 minutes before I turned it off. Everything was dried to my satisfaction. My spouse said every machine, when using senor dry, does this and she always turns it off. Here is the reason I bought it and will continue to use it. Old LG dryer pulled over 6000W continuous. new GE unit pulled a max of 1100w, but never continous more like 600w to 800w. Do the math depending on your electric KWh costs...this saves a lot of money espeically if your in the 25c/kwh and do a lot of loads. Plus added bonus, I eliminated a 240v breaker and converted it to a dedicated 120v outlet in the laudry room which now has the space for my commercial freezer....no down side to this unit for me.
That’s always been my question too. As someone else already replied, you just peel the sealant off to clean the black filter and then reapply the sealant.
For me I found lint was coming through the 4 swiggly slits from top and bottom of filter frame. I taped all the slits with electrical tape and seems to do the trick, not sure what is the purpose of those slits.
Hi Ben, I had completed a nice long review of the 1st video but somehow it got posted to a different review. Which was weird because I was praising you disassembling the machine and all the lady that got the review did not take the machine apart at all, yet she gave me a Red Heart for the review. So sorry, but Now you know, and here I am back again, wanting to see what you have now. I was thinking KAPTON Tape which is non conductive and heat resistant. We use in electronics, 3d Printers etc. Very Good Tape. I have had my current Sear units cleaned, replaced the heat element in the dryer, and rollers in the washer. I also replaced a jumper wire on one high power circuit in the dryer after it melted the solder at the joint. But we are in our 4th quarter of life now and looking to downsize and we will want to replace these Machines they are almost 15 Years old, this new All in One looks great. Been pretty thorough with cleaning my filter until the last month. Got behind. There was so much lint build up on the left side of that area. I had to use one of those long thin grabbers. Took out a lot. Is there an easier way to clean that side?
We have had the GE Combo since July and have done about 240 loads. A couple of days ago the unit got stuck on load sensing with 15 minutes to go and wouldn't finish the drying process. When I manually stop the unit the clothes are dry. It appears that the sensor is not determining that the clothes are dry. Great machine but don't like having to monitor the unit to turn it off when it gets to this point in the drying cycle.
What was you drying ? I have only had my unit for 3 days and it did this on my work uniforms that are 100% cotton long sleeves and pants that are 100% cotton so I was not sure if this is a issue or just design.
I’ve had this washer/dryer unit since August. I have not noticed a build up of lint on the fins. I have noticed a build up at the very back and also to the left of the filter. Any thoughts?
So I’ve spent the last 48hours going down the internet rathole on this issue. I have tentatively come to the following conclusion: I took a close look at the filter assembly and noticed that’s it’s slightly wedge-shaped front to back, and so are the corresponding upper and lower slots that the filter rides in. When you insert the filter the geometry of the filter and rail system forces the rubber gasket on the right side of the filter against the rail lip to form a seal. I’m going to assume for now the seal is consistent around the full circumference of the filter and there are no gaps. Honestly I think a lot of thought went into the design of the filter despite some of the criticism the filter gets. However, when you pull a dirty filter out, lint has accumulated in the slots to the left of the rubber seal and eventually makes its way to the coil side when the cleaned filter is inserted. Having observed this, when I clean my filter I also vacuum out the slots. I suspect that the weather strip modifications you see others make prevents lint from accumulating in the slots around the circumference of the filter (in addition to augmenting the function of the rubber gasket). I believe the filter seals just fine but it does allow lint to deposit in the slots that subsequently gets past the filter after removal and reinsertion. Could the filter system be improved by putting a rubber gasket on the left side? Perhaps. I tried the electrical tape fix, but upon removing the tape I didn't see any lint accumulation under the tape. At least on my filter assembly, lint is not getting through the gap on the foam side. I'm also very careful to replace the foam filter properly after cleaning and that took some practice. For now, I’m just going to be vigilant about cleaning out the slot that the filter rides in. I'm also going to thoroughly clean the outer perimeter of the filter as well. As far as the lint that accumulates on the left side of the filter compartment, I don’t believe it would be detrimental to drying performance unless a crazy amount accumulated. I also believe GE would be smart to add a coil washing system in future models like Samsung has done. Overall I'm still satisfied with my purchase despite the extra bit of maintenance required.
@@bensappliancesandjunk Oh wait, so you let the silicone set prior to putting in the filter? From the video it looked like you put the filter in with the soft silicone, so it would adhere to it.
@@Resist4 gasket maker and silicone sealant are not the same thing. I can't say for sure if he let it set first, but even if you put it in wet, with gasket maker it is designed to release easily, not adhere.
Looking forward to your comparison. I've read that the LG has what appears to be a better lint trap/removal tray and some kind of coil rinsing system built in. Kinda wish I had waited a little longer before getting the GE. @@bensappliancesandjunk
I bought Permatex optimum max temp gasket maker. I didn't realize it was a bright red color until I opened it up. Is this safe to use for this application? will any of this red color go into the machine or the silicone itself and cause problems later on?
I wish Miele made a combo unit. I had a Miele ventless condenser dryer in a home I sold. The condenser coil easily removed and was part of the regular cleaning schedule. I would just have to run it under a tap every month or two and it was brand new again.
Hello. Have had this for 3 days. I put a small load in last night on quick wash setting. When I woke up my phone notified me that it had been running on combination load for 80 minutes? What does that mean ? Washed several loads before on same setting and it never said this ?
My combo is not drying! I put shop vac on end of drain hose got alot of water worked great for one load now same think its not drying and not even getting hot when drying?
One thing to check is the length of drain hose you have going into the drain. I don't have the manual with me right now but I think it was something like max 7" from the drain opening. If it's too long it causes drying issues. I read it either on Reddit or say a YT video a couple of months ago before I bought my unit.
I have a question about the detergent tub dispenser. Looking at a dishwasher, the detergent solidifies in the tubes to change the amount dispensed overtime. So the question is are you seeing this happen to the new clothes washers. I’m trying to decide if this is a feature I would like or would it be more trouble then it’s worth.
My filter is collecting zero lint . I am pretty sure the channel before the filter is clogged. I dont want to take it apart, but how else can I possibly reach that area?
I’d like to see between the two bowls after a year of regular use. (That’s The outside of the spin bowl-inside of the outer bowl) that’s where troublesome lint just loves to hang out with its friend fabric softener. (Hopefully this filter hack helps)
If you are sealing the filter off how are you cleaning it after each load? Am I understanding correctly that it's not meant to collect in the middle of that filter but on the outside and that is where you are meant to scrape it off? So you really should have no need to pull it apart unless you are replacing it right?
Sorry, are rubber gasket sealer makers removable after they dry? Or can you no longer take the filter completely apart to clean it? What about using that plus the electrical tape?
Was obvious this isn't an airtight seal. Filter housing needs a gasket and a way to put firm pressure on it once installed. There must be easy access to areas that can accumulate lint, and tools and clear instructions for cleaning.
With you having the unit apart, I’m curious where that ‘hole’ goes that’s in the same place the lint is? I was attempting to clean the excess lint out of mine and dropped something in that hole and now I’m unsure how to get it out without taking my unit apart. Please help 😩
GE should design it to be easy to access the coils. You have to blow out the coils to keep them working properly. I do this on my HVAC system, and refrigerator twice a year.
Question: our unit is not drying well at all. I have to hang dry out clothes for a few hours after drying in the unit. It seems to have an issue with moisture buildup and the lent filter barely has lent. It actually has more water that comes off of it than lent. We’ve had the unit looked at and they replace humidity sensors and fully cleaned the unit but it still won’t dry. Any suggestions?
I really like your videos. I didn’t find them til already a big lint problem. My hubby bought this machine to help me with physical limits. I’ve been following your tips and planning on doing this one. QUESTION I have cleaned a lot of the lint out. It was collecting down in the left side looking in and along back. I can’t get it perfect but it’s better. Now I’m not getting much lint collecting on the dry white side of the push in filter. I used to clean after each load a significant amount. Also the lint I just cleaned with brush is more damp than originally. We have lots of pets and I clean hair out of inner blue rubber on loads especially sheets and blankets. Any help would be greatly appreciated

I have noticed the filter no longer sits flush with the outside of the washer when fully installed. Makes me believe lint may be able to get around the back of the filter. Update, I got a pump filter clean error, pulled it out, I had a huge ball of lint in the filter drain. I diffently have an issue with the main filter no catching everything.
I have a solution based on user comments. I have tried several modifications and believe I have solved the lint bypassing with weather stripping in specific locations and a better secondary filter than what they provide. No need for tape or silicone. When you have time, reach out so you can test. I’m also interested in getting in touch with GE regional rep, the software also needs work. The time on just about all choices can automatically be cut by 10 to 15 min minimum with no change in drying or washing quality. What is the best way to contact you if your interested, your channel is one of the best out there.
I threw out the packaging. I had purchased several and tried all different sorts of devices to vacuum inside. When I send the video, I will also send photos of the brushes. I believe it was a kit I purchased at Home Depot. It had one long skinny brush, and one fat one around 3 inches Round and 4 inches long. The bristles were just right and not too stiff. In order to use that larger brush, you do not push back-and-forth on the fins. You rotate the brush slowly to get in between the fence and at the same time keep a vacuum attachment just sucking the lint out. You can actually just hold it under the brush And spin the brush slowly or, just spin the brush to loosen everything up and then vacuum straight in and straight out without touching any of the. That is all you will need. Anyone who regrets this purchase, I would say once you know how to clean it until a new filter has been designed, it’s a great machine. It looks like GE is way superior over LG, just the fact that the size of their condenser is only a quarter of the size of what GE uses, shows a lot about what they whipped together. Also, looking at the video that was posted of only several washes there was more buildup on the LG then there was on the GE. I have no clue how to fix the LG problem, because I don’t own that machine yet.
Love the channel and thanks for everything you do! Question: Have you noticed any mildew smell or growth in the machine? Particularly on the first stage lint filter? I clean the filter after every cycle and check it before every cycle. I hadn’t used mine in about a week and when I checked the filter I noticed a musty mildew smell, no lint though. I’ve noticed the vent area stays wet/humid between washes and I think this is potentially an issue for the machine that can lead to mildew growth in that area. Since you’ve torn it down, curious to hear if you’ve noticed any mildew growth anywhere. Thanks!
Similar issue here. No musty smell, but there are times when the filter is pretty wet at the end of a load. I also had to call GE right when I got the unit because my lint filter had mold spots on it! That was brand new when it was delivered/installed about 2 months ago. GE has been good about getting back to me though. I've gotten emails and even a phone call to let me know that they will be replacing the whole unit .... not just the lint filter, the whole thing. I did confirm it would be a brand new one and not a refurb..That call was about a week ago so we'll see if they follow through.
We always pull the filter out when not doing a load and set in on top so it dries out. Once dried we also always clean lint off the filter. We always keep the filter out and front door open to let the unit dry out as much as possible.
Mine is not drying. Lint is not building on the coils. It is building up to the left. I took out the filter and took a wire hanger to hook all the lint that was to the left, and it was crazy how much lint there was. I had balls of lint coming out. Fistfulls!! I still couldn’t get it all out so I ordered a dryer brush and a vacuum cleaner extension. My clothes never dry all the way and I always have to put extra time on them. I have four kids. I thought this washer would be better, but it’s not.
I agree the filter was poorly designed and engineered. It isn’t just taping that seam. The lint also goes around the back plane of the filter where it is supposed to seated and seal against the rear of the housing once you slide the complete filter housing into place. The foam filter does very little to stop lint from passing. I use the Winix pet pre-filter sheets to overcome most the lint issue. If you look from front to back of the filter on the foam side you will see that the lip distance is inconsistent. The lip distance is greater in front than in back. The shorter the distance means the filter is less likely to stop lint from passing and ending up on the condenser fins.
Hi Ben if this question was asked before i do apologize. I would like to know if you MUST remove the detergent dispenser housing (the blue plastic where the dispenser drawers insert) to open up the coil housing to clean the lint out of the coils? Thanks in advance your videos are great keep up the great work.
No, its a housing right beside the dispenser. Looks like its the same thing, but it isn't. The filter housing is removable w/o touching the detergent housing.
@bensappliancesandjunk wow thank you so much for the quick reply and great information i sure do hope that ge comes up with a permanent fix for this because my coil had alot of lint in it and for the hard earned money we paid for these units i think they should supply a fix for us. Thanks again.
i have had my machine since July of 2023. i have noticed severe lint build up on coils and on the intake side of the lint filter (open area behind the soap dispenser). do you have any recommendations on how to clean the lint from this area?
Can you simply use an compressed air can to blow off lint from the coil? Or is it hard to reach in to use this efficiently? Or could this damage the coils somehow? Also, what about using 3M High Temp ‘TESA’ tape to seal the crevices? Or will it not stick properly and easily come off? (Tesa tape usually is used to wrap electrical cords together)
I think the vacuum may also need something brush like to free the lint from the coils or you would have to get the suction right on the coils. Also, you probably cannot do this right at the end of a load cause things are still damp.
@@markellis7866 It's not that damp, though getting the bits of dust off is still a pain. I noticed the heat pump on the LG WM6998HBA combo has self-cleaning fins and the lint filter seems better designed from what I've seen on YT. If only GE would have put in an access door like they did with the pump filter.
I just saw an option in the menu called Ultra Fresh? You can turn it on or off. Is this from a recent update? I can’t find it in a manual anywhere. What does it do?
@@MyJman37you are right, I could not get it to turn on either. Was set to off on default and I hadn’t tried to turn it on yet as I wasn’t sure what it did. However it was not there prior to a software update (I think). Maybe something coming?
Just checked mine as the filter wouldn't go in, tons of lint in the back. Will have to vacuum regularly, few stuck to the coils. Annoying that you have to dig in there to get it out.
Once you figure out a working design, can you please send me the.STL file so I can print it as well? 😅
Me too I would like the file!
I would be interested in buying whatever you come up with if it works
For sure! I have this machine and the lint build up not only on the coils but inside that while compartment is ridiculous
Knee high pantyhose. I slid them over the filter housing and carefully placed the filter back in the slot so as not to tear the hose. It seems to be working great at preventing lint from collecting on the coils.
Still working
Not a fire hazard?
I freaking love the internet and am so grateful to you for sharing!!!
@@cleyva213 this was my thought 😮 hope someone chimes in
Hello Mark. So do you then just wipe off the lint from the panty hose on the left side of the filter??
Further testing has resolved almost 100% of lint issues on the Rails and the condensor after several additions of weather stripping in several key locations.
This just confirms all of the locations causing the problems. If you have a location to send photos to, I will share them. I have tried to get the attention of GE through several attempts and unsussful in reaching anyone that is interested in the design failure.
I’d be very interested if you could upload your own video showing your upgrades.

Agreed
Four months after purchase we were having the problems described. I tried the electrical tape fix and it worked! Still have a pending service call which we’ll keep since the tape doesn’t seem like a permanent repair and I’m reluctant to use RTV for fear of voiding my warranty. But for now our combo is working as it should again. Thanks Ben!
What type of tape? Brand? Does it give off a smell?
he tells you in the video, best of luck in life@@Kne2450
Have you notice if the tape is still working as a great fix? I was looking into this but going to wait a while till I see how things go
GE service sent us a replacement filter but the tape continued to work perfectly until we got the new filter and I’m keeping the old taped one as a backup. Tech also said the RTV caulk option was OK and would not void warranty.

How long does a large mixed load take to wash & dry on a normal cycle?

Can't say that I'm noticing any buildup, but I only do 1 or 2 loads each week. Thanks for the info though 👍🏽
I'm really loving this machine so far - it's one of my most satisfying purchases.
I love my too! Even with my lint build up. This video was helpful.
I also own the GE one and done Facebook group, and would love for you to help out with the group.
Also, every dryer in existence has always had a lint buildup issue I believe. It doesn't help that this one specific model doesn't vent to the outside
I'm actually a part of it and have been for months. I don't post a lot but I do read a ton
@chrispapademetrious408 Agreed. Let's see how long this combo will last with built-up lint that is hard to reach.
This lint problem completely fried my machine GE replaced it this week.
@thomrasmussen you accumulated that much lint that fast?
I also have this issue, it’s a nightmare, if there was a access door on the top that would be helpful!
Nice fix.
Agreed
I posted a solution to the Filter assembly that will resolve lint / per hair bypassing the filter
@@HomeGuySolutions Thx. Where did you post?
Would love a photo or video of what you did to prevent lint leakage.
The person stated the problem is a little different from what was narrated in the video. And gave a possible solution however they did not apply and try that solution out

everything still seems to be running great.
Im supposed to get one next year at my shop. When I do, I'll do a teardown on it like this one and see if it addresses it.
Please let me know when you find the solution and make the video. Thanks.😊
Me too please! Thank you!!

I modified the filter by using the 'red gasket' method as Ben showed. Made sure the lint was cleaned out as best as I could and then I reset all the accumulated error codes. @@edbremer8563 The lint gets by the rail assembly, not the filter.
Ben, the problem is not around the cheap foam filter. It is the seal on the top, top rear and bottom of the entire filter. Not sure if you’ve seen the videos I posted.
Agreed.
If you glue everything down doesn’t that mean the whole assembly will need to be replaced if the lint or fam filters get damaged?
I think it should be fine since it is gasket maker and not adhesive/sealant. just make sure you use the right product. gasket maker will not adhere the parts together and at the very least it should be easier to clean up and reapply if needed.
definitely do not use something like silicone adhesive
@@bluearcherx Oh, thanks for the clarification!
I thought the GE engineer said lint wouldn't be an issue. Hmmmmm. But I don't see many people cleaning this machine as you suggested, when most people barely clean the filter at all. Glad you tested this! Just wish manufactures would do the same prior to releasing a product to market.
the GE engineer HAS to say that.

In my testing of “Less Lint”, I would look ke to see the testing they did. Amount of lint is the same, if not more in some cases. I think they pulled the wool "lint" over our eyes. By having such a large, flat filter, to us gullible humans, it looks like less lint.
@@HomeGuySolutions Where?
Im excited about heat pump dryers, but it will always comes down keeping the condenser coils clean. It would be a great idea if the coils could easily be removed for cleaning.
Removing the coils for cleaning isn't likely since refrigerant lines go through it, but an access panel or removal cover that allows better access to them would definitely be a good idea. Cleaning those coils should be regular maintenance just like cleaning the coils on your home air conditioner or heat pump.

@@HomeGuySolutions how do I clean the lint build up stuck to the back left side of the machine?

Thank you! I heard this was gonna be an issue. I’ve only done about 4 loads so far but I want to keep on top of this. I appreciate the help!
The silicone you used how did the black filter housing not stick to that slilcone. Are you able to still remove the black filter without redoing the silicone everytime??
I like that the LG fins are accessible. Taking out 1 screw on top.
Thanks Ben. Very useful and informative video!
Any ideas on how to remove the lint filter if the little tab that presses down broke off?
After seeing this yeah. I decided an LG washtower is a better buy. thanks.
I put the silicone inside the outer edges of the part that comes out (that holds the black foam) and it's working great (I let the silicone dry for 24 hours before reassembling the filter, so that cleaning is possible)
if you us the rubber glue sealant how do you clean the foam?
What would you recommend between the electrical tape and the rubber gasket maker? The electrical tape seems a lot easier to apply. Also to remove in case you need to make a warranty claim.
well if you glue it, wont it be hard to wash the filter as it says should do once in a while?
Doesn't the sealant prevent you from removing the filter once it hardens?
Thank you, I wondered the exact same thing. You're locking that foam filter in.

When will they finally come out with an updated version of this machine?
Ben, thank you very much for the video I was wondering what is the brand name of the RTV gasket sealant that you’re using? Thank you.
How do you take apart the black filter to clean it if its silicone attached??
That’s always been my question too.
As someone else already replied, you just peel the sealant off to clean the black filter and then reapply the sealant.
For me I found lint was coming through the 4 swiggly slits from top and bottom of filter frame. I taped all the slits with electrical tape and seems to do the trick, not sure what is the purpose of those slits.
Does that gasket affect you being able to take out the black filter for cleaning?
We hate changing the loads, we want to drain the pump easier, and we like the heat pump idea for energy savings. And it seems it can do sheets and towels well. Appreciate you in depth reviews and great presentation style. Keep it up, Dennis & Margaret in Virginia
Looking for best price and place to get the large front center panel that seales the door. Thanks.
I wonder if HVAC tape would be a good option, or if that would retain too much heat on the filter and damage the plastic.
We offer premade upgrade kits for the filter to resolve the issue. We also offer a flushing procedure to bring your machine "Back to New" without opening it up.

Do u open the filter and wash the foam filter? Please and thank you
Hello Ben and love your VIDs. Would you please tell me what "Vibration Pad(s)" work best under the Levelling Legs? Thank you very much. Ron
Been pretty thorough with cleaning my filter until the last month. Got behind. There was so much lint build up on the left side of that area. I had to use one of those long thin grabbers. Took out a lot. Is there an easier way to clean that side?
Has GE issued a new lint filter yet? Do you think they will?
So how do you clean the foam filter now that it's attached?
Gasket wraps around the housing so it's easily removed and cleaned
@@bensappliancesandjunk Thanks! I'll have to check that out and do the procedure. Great tip!
For my house I have to go ventless . What do you recommend as far as two in one? This GE or the LG All in One?
I have the brand new LG model on the way to my store. So I can do a head to head comparison between both
Interested to see how the LG lint filtering works. Along with customizable washing and drying options.
Looking forward to your comparison. I've read that the LG has what appears to be a better lint trap/removal tray and some kind of coil rinsing system built in. Kinda wish I had waited a little longer before getting the GE. @@bensappliancesandjunk
@@ttph4835 it does. The LG filter is wayyyy better engineered
@@bensappliancesandjunkLooking forward to your review. Soon I hope!
Oh my! I'm having the same issue. I've had this since October! How about you?
No need for fabric softener with this. It just causes problems.
I had the some question, i wish someone here can answer this.
Did you check the pump filter, I read where someone lost a pad doing the same thing you where doing and found it in the pump filter area.
Did you install the foam right after you put the rtv on
Let it solidify slightly then put the plastic housing in w/ foam so it would form-fit
How are you going to take out the filter to clean the interior portion if you seal it?
Gasket seals around plastic. Easily removed
GE should design it to be easy to access the coils. You have to blow out the coils to keep them working properly. I do this on my HVAC system, and refrigerator twice a year.
I would suggest glass tape similar to the tape used in stoves or high heat applications.
Hey how bout avideo in the shity pedistal and how the unstability of it Mae's you feel like your in L.A
Question: our unit is not drying well at all.
You do not need to use brushes. We have developed upgrade kits for the filter and solved the problem. Also, for the lint buildup to the left and on the coil, we have a flushing procedure without taking the machine apart.

Has anyone been able to successfully find a replacement black foam filter? It appears to me they've been back ordered since before October 2023.

@@markellis7866 Great tip, I've since started doing this as well. Definitely helps the sealed system dry out.
Just posted a video on a channel RUclips > Home Guy Customer Service
Can you simply use an compressed air can to blow off lint from the coil? Or is it hard to reach in to use this efficiently? Or could this damage the coils somehow? Also, what about using 3M High Temp ‘TESA’ tape to seal the crevices? Or will it not stick properly and easily come off? (Tesa tape usually is used to wrap electrical cords together)
Air is going to embed lint deeper into the fins. You need a vacuum.
Did your conversation with them convince you that you shouldn’t seal the filter?
I just saw an option in the menu called Ultra Fresh? You can turn it on or off. Is this from a recent update? I can’t find it in a manual anywhere. What does it do?
That's strange I see this setting as well yet mine will not let me turn it on... can I ask you which mode you are in when getting your to turn on?
@@MyJman37you are right, I could not get it to turn on either. Was set to off on default and I hadn’t tried to turn it on yet as I wasn’t sure what it did. However it was not there prior to a software update (I think). Maybe something coming?
Just checked mine as the filter wouldn't go in, tons of lint in the back. Will have to vacuum regularly, few stuck to the coils. Annoying that you have to dig in there to get it out.
We offer a complete filter upgrade solution and a cleaning process for the machine.
