You were one of the MAIN reasons I challenged myself to learn Italian. Now, a year and a half later I've made so much progress and I'm planning on taking an intensive language course in Italy probably in 2022. I'm literally in love with the Italian language. Your content is amazing, you're a constant inspiration source for me and I'm so grateful to have found your channel. Thank you for your curiosity and desire to learn! You're amazing!
I'm from the French-speaking part of Switzerland, and I had to learn German from the end of primary school. I didn't really like this language but didn't hate it either because I was not too bad at it (on the contrary I loved English from the beginning). When I went to university, I chose English but had to choose a second main subject. After eliminating all the things that didn't inspire me I chose German. The level was too hard (regarding the level you have at the end of high school), and so I decided to go to a summer language school for one month. At that time I had been studying German for ten years, but wasn't able to hold a conversation. This month in Germany was like a revelation! I could speak, I met such nice people, and since then German holds a very dear place in my heart. I made my two internships during my Tourism degree in Austria and it was so cool! Being able to understand and speak 3 languages fluently is so awesome and opens to so many amazing things and people, I'm so thankfull for that (even if university was not for me, it has really helped me in this way) ♥
I've found out that for me watching kids cartoos in the language I want to learn helps a lot, because the vocabulary is basic, the accents are aren't crazy and the rythm of the conversation is slower. It also helps a lot to have actual contact with people that speak that language. One of the most helpful methods is to actually go and live in the country where that language is spoken, this way you are kind of forced to learn at least some very basic words like "entrance".
My favorite book about language learning and it’s infinitely uncountable benefits and changes to your persona is “in other words” by Jhumpa Lahiri. I really recommend it to you! It’s one of my favorites :)
I can give grammar tips. When I was learning German, I accidentally improved my English grammar by translating it backwards and forwards on Duolingo. I used to have sloppy grammar, which my friend's numerous attempts to correct my grammar had gone to waste. It is because I don't really care, until I took an interest in learning a language is when I am more conscious about grammar. Before I don't even know what present perfect is, and I absolutely dreaded tense during my school years. My point is learn a grammar overview around beginning phase and then for intermediate phase you can forget about grammar and focus mostly on input and output, only until beyond intermediate is when refining grammar easier to achieve (for me personally that is).
Hallo, I have lived most of my life in Germany and only a small portion of it in America. When I went to elementary in Germany we learned both German and English. Then in 6th grade I learned Latin. I was born in America though. Viel Glück.
@@annikab8273 Thanks for the reply. In contrast, I was born in China and came to Australia when I was 8. I remember that I used to absolutely dreaded learning English, because no matter what I did, I will always get it wrong with my essays having loads of red marks and I have given up on tenses because English tense is just so confusing. Back then, my English, l believe, was already at a B2/C1, but I cannot improve my grammar. Currently my German is at an A2. Learning the German grammar through translation has a surprising affect on English, for example German doesn't have the auxiliary verb 'do' so I came to realised that I always make the English mistake such as "I did went to ...." through using Duolingo. And additionally, it became much more clear to me what preposition and conjunction are, e.g "in order to......" vs "um......zu......" and why use whom (also thanks to German's Akk and Dat case) with the help of a text book. Although German grammar is a beast on its own but I believe it's because I am having too little input and output in comparison to English.

This is so inspirational, I tried to learn Italian before but gave up within a week, I'm going to try again. I've been learning English for 2 years now but haven't made it past b2 level (self-taught) I first used this book called "Inglés básico A. ghio. d" it really helped and of course RUclips videos. So if you want to learn English that book might help. Just from my point of view when you learn a new language by yourself at home the hardest part is to find people to practice with, even on apps.
This is awesome! I hope everyone who takes the class enjoys it a lot and feels empowered to break free of the common misconceptions of language learning to truly enjoy the process and make some serious headway! Love what you’re doing Nathaniel, keep it up.
I guess I'm glad you guys wanna share your interest for language learning with communities which are probably not made up of language learning enthusiasts (and that might decide to start delving a bit more into this really huge but still interesting topic). At the same time though, with awesome free resources like the Immerse with Migaku channel and the Refold website by Matt vs Japan, which both provide invaluable information and really go in depth in what language learning is really about, providing also great advice about how to go in order to apply the theoretical info they provide, I honestly would tell you guys reading these comments to not buy this course. If you can get such great stuff for free, why spending money?
so excited for this! especially resonated with what you said about learning a language in school. there is so much that inspired, yet frustrated me with school's structure of that learning process, leading to a push and pull feel towards language learning. the mindset that was pushed upon us only made me more incentivized to break out of it and look for new avenues to learn more effectively. thank you both so much for creating this course. i think the value it will bring to the experience people have learning languages will be tremendous, and it's truly a wonderful gift to us all.
Stumbled across this video, bought the course. I've been studying french for the last 18 months - in-person courses, apps, books etc. Really appreciating the psychology and systems. Excited to crack on with it.
I loved how you split the learning process on your Portuguese video, this lead me to BUY the course today! I speak 3 languages already but have been struggling with Italian for a while. Looking forward to it, been a follower of your process for a while my friend, keep it up!
Amazing! I started learning Spanish at the top of the year, it’s been such a fun journey( the total opposite from Highschool). Looking forward to year 2, and your course to help me along the way!! Cheers 🥂
Your videos are great. Thanks! I learnt french being thrown in the deep end in a Swiss public school and for three months was overwhelmed. When you only know english learning a Latin-based language it is really rough with all the verb tenses. I advocate throwing yourself without fear of making mistakes and working really hard at grammar and mixing with local at eye chance you get. I also am an advocate rote learning verb tenses by repetition and memorizing poems which helped me in french. It is a mark of respect to master the language of each country you live in.
This came at the perfect time. I'm in my 3rd week of a German intensive and don't understand why most things are the way they are, but this is also the essence of German haha. Thank you!
This looks really cool. Both of my parents are fluent Spanish speakers (de Uruguay y Argentina, vos!), but I was raised in a predominantly English-speaking culture. It wasn't until I had an intensive language immersion experience (just like Johnny's) that I actually learned the language. And, interestingly enough, I haven't forgotten it a decade later. I feel confident that Nathaniel and Johnny will be excellent at teaching the skill of language-learning. 👌🏼
That's great to hear! Both of my parents are fluent Spanish speakers as well (Puerto Rican and Dominican) and I've lived in the US my whole life, so my Spanish isn't the best. I hope to eventually become fluent in Spanish by immersing myself in the language too!
I'm beyond excited to take this course. Even more excited (still) since finding that you and Johnny Harris work together after your nostalgia video. I have been watching you both and it's even more exciting when you find connections you didn't know existed. Thanks for putting out content that is inspiring!
I really enjoyed learning English in school! And thought it was fairly effective, all things considered, taking into account that I was able to communicate in it after a few years of such lessons. Same for French.

I am from Russia, I've beem studying english for 11 years now(of my 16), but I actually got to speak only 3 years ago, so yes in school(at least russian) you learn almost nothing about language. And I have never had a real normal conversation with native speaker. But my new school made start french, jope it will lead me to something
Your videos always inspire me in my journey of living life more deeply and meaningful after loosing my mom last year. This month, I started trying to learn Japanese.
I was thinking of learning japanese and now nathaniel is here with a tutorial on how to learn foreign languages. Damn, this was so helpful! (Also can you read minds and such?)
I want to do this with German and Japanese. I already feel confident in English. And I agree with you. I never payed attention in class. I was a "bad student" but I started to experience the language more that studying it without knowing what I was doing. I acquired it faster than my classmates, it was almost effortless.
Great video! I loved going to school in France just over the border from Geneva back in the mid-80’s. Immersion is the way to go! Arrive in September and be fluent by the holidays by making sure you stay away from all the other English speakers and only hang with the locals. Worked for me and I then ended up majoring in French! I later studied Persian-Farsi with Iranian teachers at the Defense Language Institute, but French served me well, especially after working for years for a Canadian company in Québec.
My highschool Spanish teacher told me I should not take the language anymore because I was so bad at speaking exercises, and she thought I would continue to struggle (yes she was mean for no reason) but that moment with her really discouraged me, and I turned away from the language for a while. I’m 24 now and I’m fluent in Spanish baybeeee!!!!
ayeee so happy you never gave up on learning the language despite everything you went through with your high school Spanish teacher. This just goes to show how we're pretty much capable of doing anything we put on mind to. Keep it up:)
What a fantastic idea. I plan on using this guide to learn spanish and french ....and also combat my addiction to endlessly scrolling the internet for hours wasting time when i could be learning a new language. Love both of your work
Spent years trying to learn spanish the painful way. Now I'm learning french and all the pieces of language learning are coming together for me. Just found this channel today and subscribed!
I'm in the process of learning how to express myself orally in English, and it is not enjoyable at all. Although it is like stretching your brain, because every now and then you feel more flexible in conversations with people speaking your target language. But that's another thing, conversations have another time speed that they may have in your native language or even your second language. That's a whole conversation topic right there and perhaps the only way to tackle it is by just experimenting and gaining confidence.
I'm really in love with swedish language and culture so I've been learning it during this pandemic. I also decided to start learning some french recently. Try to express myself is the most challenging part but your content has truly inspired me to improve! Saludos desde Chile :)
I still haven’t watched the video but I just wanted to thank you for the language learning resources that you included in your most recent newsletter, they helped me revive my Spanish learning journey! Okay I’m gonna watch the video now haha
I'm not into languages but your videos are so inspiring! I'm not native speaker of English and I've been struggling with learning it for 12 years. Yeah, it's been a long time and still I think I'm not good at it, but your video encouraged me to give it another play. Thank you!
i studied abroad and our language class was 12 hour a week and extremely boring. i enjoyed the presentation part where we got to speak in the forge in language in front of the class. we did it once a semester. i loved seeing how far my classmates have come. i do believe that we got most if not all of studying done outside the classroom. we’d study for our exams with a native from our dorm who’d be more than happy to help. since i was fully immersed in the language. i left fluent
My partner and I teach languages (Italian and French) online :) We're going to buy your course because it looks really interesting and we'll share the link with our friends/students!
Your view of language learning and practise at school is interesting: in French schools it's supposed to be different, ie not that frustrating, and teachers give a clear goal to each lesson plan with a final project, at least in junior high school. Any helpful external resources are welcome though, and the purpose of it all is exactly...to get out of school to live new experiences and keep being curious en enthusiastic.
Honestly no need to pay for a course. 1: find comprehensible compelling input (learning languages with Netflix’s, kindle reading, RUclips videos, course etc.) 2: have hours and hours of input 3: use a system to hack memorization (i.e. Anki or other system) 4: find opportunities to practice output (i.e, iTalki, Skype, language partners etc.) 5: find a manner to track progress (i.e. excel or Google sheets tracking and metrics) 6: repeat over an extended period of time 7: don’t buy courses to show u how to learn a language no need Resources: Luca L., Steve K., Matt vs Japan, others
$89 USD for information freely available on the internet and from Steve Kaufman, Luca Lampariello, Matt versus Japan, Robin MacPherson, Podcasts from many different language learners. Really?! Woah 😦
@@neelay123 depends on each person and their life. But I would always recommend that you maintain contact with your target language daily, whether 1 or 2x etc. Consistency is most important.
Oh man - this is exciting! I’ve been learning Spanish and off and on for a few years now and this will be a nice thing to add to my tool chest of skills.
Thanks both for this video! I am currently living in Spain and I agree with you that the Spanish spoken is different from the Spanish taught at french school. I agree that it gives you a lot of opportunities, such as better job and you can better enjoy your trips. I am currently learning Portuguese and Arabic and I hope being fluent soon 😊 Merci, gracias, thanks, gràcies, شكرا, obrigado
What a wonderful video! I can see the passion that you have for language learning. What you are saying is true, traditional methods from the classroom can be extremely frustrating. The key is to really discover your OWN way to learn. Language learning for me has obviously broadened my perspective and I am now addicted to it, but it has also paved the way to my much more confident self...not only when I speak, but also assuring myself that I know how to find and use information to learn topics outside of language learning (this is especially helpful during a time where self study in general, it seems, is inevitably getting more popular). It seems both of you have found the this for yourselves and have learned to constantly adapt your own methods to your needs/learning from your experiences beforehand. Thank you for inspiring others to learn more about the world through languages!
Do you think it's easier to learn one language at a time? When moving onto your second or third language, did you find you were forgetting the other languages you learnt?
i feel this video so much, new languages are so near and dear to my heart, the feeling of speaking them is so cool :) i am german, i took English and French in school, while english there was pretty easy for me and mostly fun, learning french in school was sooo hard. i really improved my french in France on the Seine for 17 months with real french captains on a rivercruiseship. Right now i am trying to learn italian, it is a bit hard but i will stick with it!
This is my third time watching this video but every time it’s made me think: I am a native English speaker from Canada and I’ve studied French for the past 13 years and I can speak it fluently. From SK (Senior kindergarten) to grade 4 in French immersion so every subject was in French except Science, English and Music so I learnt conversational French and could speak in advance verb tenses but not in writing (don’t get me started). Then I moved to another city and a new school where everyone was just starting French when I was fluent. I felt as if I was trading my speaking abilities for conjugation abilities which I totally regret. I would rather speak a language fluently than speaking and writing decent enough. I would say I am entirely fluent now but I agree with the frustrations of Nathaniel and Johnny. I am now pursuing Spanish on Duolingo but it’s getting me no where.
The time I decide to learn a new language as a new year goal, this video pops up in notification, love your content and the way you narrate everything. Love From India
Does your course have a lifetime or an unlimited one-time payment? The reason I ask, is because I luv learning languages, but my work projects get in the way… I can go 5 months with only receiving mundane work within a project, allowing me to DIY learn, and ENJOY Learning, a language. But then I get hit with a project of work upon work for a little over a year. Just piled on work, doing 10-hour shifts trying to catch up and having to do overtime on weekends. Suffice to say, I’d forget the majority of what I learned. And all of the subscriptions I had? Poof! Gone! Expired or I would close to the sake of not wasting money during this horde of work that I get hit with. I hope you can understand. I want to just get to a conversational level to express and understand untranslatable expressions, and have deep conversations with others, and enjoy the change of identity in the process. I love how people open up to you when you can speak their mother tongue; touching their heart instead of their mind. Please help?

Love that you speak Farsi! As a Farsi native speaker, I'm happy to help you practice if you ever want :)
when learning languages it‘s crazy how different each person picks it up! I love that you guys make it flexible☺️ really excited to start the course
so excited for this! especially resonated with what you said about learning a language in school. there is so much that inspired, yet frustrated me with school's structure of that learning process, leading to a push and pull feel towards language learning. the mindset that was pushed upon us only made me more incentivized to break out of it and look for new avenues to learn more effectively. thank you both so much for creating this course. i think the value it will bring to the experience people have learning languages will be tremendous, and it's truly a wonderful gift to us all.
Seeing two of my favourite youtubers collaborate more often makes me so happy ❤️
It is 10.12pm, I am about to sleep and Nathan's no back up plan appears in my notification. Okay, I'll sleep later..
1. What's the one thing you like most about the personal development niche?
2. What kind of videos would you like to see more on RUclips?
I'm doing a bit of research and I'd appreciate your help.
Thank you so much.
I am from Russia, I've beem studying english for 11 years now(of my 16), but I actually got to speak only 3 years ago, so yes in school(at least russian) you learn almost nothing about language. And I have never had a real normal conversation with native speaker. But my new school made start french, jope it will lead me to something
The russuian language is great I will start learning it after japanese and korean,I can't wait
I feel so genuinely excited to start learning and absorbing, definitely something I don’t think I’ve felt in a long time. Thank you for inspiring me.
we stan a continous uploader! please do more videos with your grandma!
Watching your videos made my english get so much better. Now, i enjoy learning more. And i'm excited to learn other languages too.
I’m so happy that you made a course for learning languages! I’m definitely asking for this for Christmas🎄
The content you put out has changed my views completely! Thank you!
I still haven’t watched the video but I just wanted to thank you for the language learning resources that you included in your most recent newsletter, they helped me revive my Spanish learning journey! Okay I’m gonna watch the video now haha
Good luck on your journey!
Disappointed that is not on Skillshare 😭✨
Same! I already have the Skillshare premium subscription and now it's a different platform :|
You guys are the best duo that we could have asked for!
Extremely inspiring.
My partner and I teach languages (Italian and French) online :) We're going to buy your course because it looks really interesting and we'll share the link with our friends/students!
my goal is to learn italian to immerse with my family. I trust this course. Congrats Nathaniel and Johnny!
Sadly i've been out of work most of this year like many people and cant afford the course atm but will definitely look into it in the future
1: find comprehensible compelling input (learning languages with Netflix’s, kindle reading, RUclips videos, course etc.)
2: have hours and hours of input
3: use a system to hack memorization (i.e. Anki or other system)
4: find opportunities to practice output (i.e, iTalki, Skype, language partners etc.)
5: find a manner to track progress (i.e. excel or Google sheets tracking and metrics)
6: repeat over an extended period of time
7: don’t buy courses to show u how to learn a language no need
Resources: Luca L., Steve K., Matt vs Japan, others
$89 USD for information freely available on the internet and from Steve Kaufman, Luca Lampariello, Matt versus Japan, Robin MacPherson, Podcasts from many different language learners. Really?! Woah 😦
Thanks for this! How often would you recommend studying a day?
@@neelay123 depends on each person and their life. But I would always recommend that you maintain contact with your target language daily, whether 1 or 2x etc. Consistency is most important.
I am going to live in Italy for 2 years starting next summer. Thinking of getting this course to get a headstart!
I am currently learning Portuguese and Arabic and I hope being fluent soon 😊
Merci, gracias, thanks, gràcies, شكرا, obrigado
Ill be moving to Portugal early next near and have purchased your course - Obrigardo!
Really, it's fantastic what both of you are doing
Just what I needed while learning Greek! 🙏
hey i try to learn greek too. maybe we could help each other?
@@ВераЕльчанинова I'm also learning Greek!
@@JivingWench cool! You can add me on insta - just.art.around if you need a friend to practise with :)
I'm another one who learns Greek. Started just a few days ago.
Your enthusiasm is inspiring! From a fellow Polyglot in the making!
Very inspiring. I'm interested in the course :)
Incredible timing with this Nathan! Can't wait to watch!
Dá até vontade de fazer o curso! Você é uma inspiração ❤️
At last - this sounds great. Thanks for doing this to both of you.
x
Hey! Please come to Iran, it’s a beautiful country. I’ll show you around :D
Yessss, Nathan!! Super looking forward to this course!
You are my fav RUclipsr Nat, and I am so proud about that!
your passion got me excited for learning and I can't wait to save up money to buy the course!
I am so relieved after I watched this video.
The time I decide to learn a new language as a new year goal, this video pops up in notification, love your content and the way you narrate everything.
Love From India
If anything, learning languages is a soul-LIFTING experience.
what language are you currently studying? i’m studying german and started studying spanish this past spring
I learn Italian and Greek.
Bonjour Nathaniel ! Je voulais te demander ce que tu as trouvé le plus difficile dans l'apprentissage du français ?
La langue parlé bien sur. tous les mots sont prononcé la meme maniere
That town in Mexico is Guanajuato ❤
Here a polyglot, speaking 5 fluently and learning the 6th, my son age 16 is on his 4th. It takes a special environment and mindset to do. so.
There’s no replacement for MASSIVE exposure and input. Not a good amount, Not a lot of input, but MASSIVE and consistent input.
Thank you for this video! It is really inspiring to me as an aspiring polyglot and lover for other cultures and places :)
Does your course have a lifetime or an unlimited one-time payment?
The reason I ask, is because I luv learning languages, but my work projects get in the way…
I can go 5 months with only receiving mundane work within a project, allowing me to DIY learn, and ENJOY Learning, a language.
I have been learning german for 5 years now and will for the next 3 years (its manditory) and ive learnd nothing
Thank you for the inspiration, love from Syria
