Fucking strange thing to say but as a mixed race kid growing up in the metal scene in europe Dave was like a small beacon of hope that you could be accepted on stage if you didnt look the same pasty white as everyone else. Was lucky enough to only experience racism at festivals rather than gigs i played but hearing how chill and down to earth he is in this whole chat makes me appreciate him even more as a human
Dave is directly responsible for getting myself to pick up a guitar at a young age and try and learn to shred like him. What a fun trip down memory lane, as always you are a fantastic host Craig!!
18:36 idk why the idea of a renaissance fair dude with a cotton candy going “what’s with the punk shit dude you fuckin’ changed man” absolutely smoked me, if someone animated this bit i would be so happy lmao
Never would have guessed you'd have Dave on here so cool sum 41 was my favorite band as a kid. still love them. I credit them for influencing my music taste today
What a pod! How fucking cool is Dave? Started off a Carcass style death metal band? YES LAD! I'm defo gonna be checking out what he's doing next. What a class episode, as always.
This dude was such an inspiration to me as a kid learning guitar! I liked punk at the time but wished it has the shreddiness and heaviness of metal. Dave and Sum 41 were that answer!
Ok, I have to say: I like this channel, much love, all that stuff. I am a HUGE fan of Sum 41, like, I have taken shit for being a huge Sum 41 fan and I was like "Yup, whattaya gonna do 'bout it?". And one of the the reasons I like Sum 41, I have come to understand, is Dave's contribution to the sound. Like, the harder metal edge, he brought that, THAT is why I like them more than, say Blink. ...or, at least, that is what the "story" is, Dave infused S41's sound with more metal. Either way, LOVELY interview, wonderful guy, GREAT band. Thank you, and thanks to Dave for being cool.
fellow video/photo/media guy here. The colour correction around 20:26 when you do the sponsored bit is just awesome man! Perfect skin tone 👌Just wanted to let you know. Also awesome episode! cheers
Its so sad that this kind of bands are going extinct. We need them here to inspire young musicians to go this way. Punk Rock, Pop Punk and all this early 2000s genres are so good! We, as a society, can't let go of this kind of sound as it's so powerful (specially for teenagers!) I honestly hope for Sum just to take a break and then do a massive come back, new album or not, just them being around ♡
I absolutely love this podcast! The discussion about credits is fascinating. Back in the day, I was really into researching songwriting credits for bands I loved. This was even in the early to mid-2000s. I was always stunned by how much of the writing for Sum 41's early albums was attributed to Deryck and the manager. As Dave mentioned, Deryck handled all the writing, and I’m not saying he didn’t deserve that recognition. But Dave, for example, brought so much to the table. Just listen to the solo on The Hell Song or the riff from Makes No Difference - Those feel like quintessentially "Dave" moments on guitar. What’s interesting is how bands like Blink and Green Day credit all their members for songwriting. As Dave said, Sum 41 was probably too young and not business-savvy enough at the time to realise how important that was. It’s such a shame. Some might argue, “You don’t make much money from credits.” Well, sure, if you sell fuck all records, it’s negligible. But when you’re moving close to 1 or 2 million records? It kinda makes a difference. Essentially, what this means is that, Dave, Steve-O and Cone were getting paid as ''session musicians'' which seems quite unfair.
I am a stagehand here in Calgary and I am still awake from doing this show. I can honestly say these guys play live , so many concertgoers would be amazed how much of what you hear is not actually live !!. It was an honest Straight Up Performance
@@mikewoods8565 I was at the show. Great night. Sang all night. Not ashamed to say I cried a few times. Stayed all the way til Deryck came out and did that new version of So Long Goodbye.
I saw my first Sum 41 show at the glass house in pomona in march 2018. Lined up perfectly with march breaks vacation to LA. Hometown heroes for a Canadian kid.
I had testicular problems, 2 surgeries later and one is unplugged, still there but does nothing. I must say to all men out there please check and don't be afraid to get help.
On the subject of the testicle removal. The remaining ball picks up the slack after the other is removed so any dip in testosterone or fertility is usually negligible
the first time i saw Sum was after Dave’s departure, but then he came back and was barricade at warped tour. he melted my face and hugged me in the crowd. epic moment in Pomona
About MTV Icons, I guess if its Korn, its the beginning of the song and Munky and Head was fuckin up because they were fucked up all the time. David is and was great drummer. That shit about tempo changes is on purpose and he always talks about that. Its push and pull.
