Thanks for tackling a difficult subject, Colin. Very informative, useful and encouraging. For most of us there is a barrier to putting that dirty, unpromising, odd hunk of wood into our bandsaw for the first time. By the way, that's an awesome looking bandsaw you've got there.

Thanks for the note, that's a great idea so thanks for sharing that. Would love to see what you make from the burl.

Thanks for commenting, yeah I love that old beast the bandsaw, it's only good for ripping and only takes one blade but it's and awesome tool that I looked for about 2 years for and finally found.
Great to have you with us :)

No problem Vincent, thanks for asking. Spalting is what happens to wood when it is wet and becomes infected with a fungi. The fungi feeds on the wood and if it is left wet, the fungi will basically rot the wood away to dirt. If you catch this wood early and dry it out you are left with dark streaks flowing throughout the wood. We plan on doing more regarding this in the future, but let me know if you need more info :

Thanks for commenting, sounds like you have a little treasure trove of wood the check through. If you are a turner, I'll bet there's some good piece for that too.

I often go to the firewood dealer in town and dig through the walnut pile. I've learned to look for woods that have a wavy like appearance. The wave on the wood will be a wonderful curl once finished. I also have found a huge burl, a piece they were unable to split. It must weigh close to 40 pounds.

I know what I could do with that chunk left over of that "Burl." If you have a Lathe, I see a bowl small one but a bowl none the less

Wow! That's one serious bandsaw. Just moved up from a bench model to a 14" and fell like I've hit the big time. lol. Good video.

That's a good point, spalting is basically rotting wood, so often not very good for a sound structural base. It's really just for the accent pieces and parts that don't rely on structure.
Good post carolianaframer232 ... thanks for mentioning :)

Very informative, I think the larger piece of wood that looked like burl may be apple wood.

Unfortunately the video editing software doesn't have a spell checker which I have come to rely on ... I must be more vigilant (sp?)

WoodWorkWeb Maybe you could keep all those little phrases in a simple spell-checked text document and copy/paste them when you use them? That way, they're the same (and hopefully correct!) every time, much like using a template or a jig. I transpose letters like that myself all the time, so I'm oddly sensitive to it when I see it :)

Great video, What species of wood is the burl that you found? I recently found a heavily spalted log of wood burl that looks exactly like it and I don't know what it is!

  • @carolinaframer332
    @carolinaframer332 11 лет назад

he's right but its usually a live tree that becomes infected and slowly dies. The tree is usually cut before the spalting gets too far along because it weakens the wood the longer it goes.Thats why you'll never see large pieces of furniture like an armoire for example with spalted wood.

I live in the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas, so I'm not sure what type of wood that you, the ¿'Arbutus' 'Madrona' ?called that first one. I'm quite familiar with all of the type of wood in our area.

Say Colin, is there a way to look up a particular video of yours? Right now, I accidentally clicked on this video instead of the one I should have which talks about moisture meters. I wonder how much they cost and where to get one? I like your videos because I like to know the "why" of things and you do that for me. If I am in a hurry, it is easy to advance through parts of the video that doesn't apply to me at the time. Thank you for what you do. I wish we had this technology when I was younger because I value the education that is out there on demand and for free! Our kids and grandkids seem not to realize the value of what our generation brought to them.

Unfortunately, I would never have access to such a large bandsaw. I live in MN and had land up north where they turn trees into lumber. Had land from my grandfather and there was a larger machine with about a 2' diameter saw blade, powered by your tractor. Don't have a tractor and it is 250 miles from here so not an option, though I thought hard about it. I let it go with the sale of the land but I may have been able to use it with the new owner's permission. I wonder, how can a guy like me in the city, find a way to get access to a band saw or find someone that would cut this up for me? I have an apple tree to cut down and I hate to use it for firewood when it could be used for lumber in my shop. I just sold my land because I didn't want to pay for taxes anymore for land I just used for hunting. Too bad I am late to woodworking because the land had a few buildings made from lumber where a 2x4 was actually 2"x4"! The boards were done by that saw I mentioned and they left the bark right on it. Must have been about 400,000 feet of these boards in all and I sold it so cheap I could cry now, after finding out I could have disassembled those barns and buildings and sold the wood. Oh well, hopefully the lucky guy who bought the land had better sense! I DID have the sense to sell the trees on it first. I also wonder that if I tried the chainsaw method, how thin could I make each board in that manner, or is there a better way, such as using wedges and then how long of a board can one do using that process? Also, how do I make it into usable boards after that? Put it in my planer? Or use my power hand planer to get it close and then the 12" planer? Sound like an acceptable plan or is there a better way?
