      The obsession with SOG is weird to me; every time you shoot the puck towards the net, you are giving up possession of said puck in the offensive zone. If a high % scoring chance is not there, instead of padding the goalie's stats, and likely causing the play to turn back down ice towards your end, why not keep possession, play for a better shot - even if that means, "on paper", you were outshot in the game? I do understand that traditionally, SOG is an indication of play domination, but it is way more nuanced than that. How many shots get blocked and then often lead to a rush down the other way? Offensive zone TOP and SOG should be looked at in conjunction with each other. Also, shitty goaltending is shitty goaltending.

    • @danielmaloney946

      @@floyd2222 Yes- comparing the number of goals to the number of shots without looking any deeper is moronic. The hardest job a goalie can do is play for a team like the Oilers where there are long stretches in the other end and then they give up a series of odd-man rushes and giveaways. Not a lot of shots but a lot of scoring chances relative to number of shots.

    • @tygher
      @tygher 29 дней назад +1

      Anyone else annoyed with the constant editing of shot totals? Up. Down. Up. Down. I can imagine a group of people debating the calibre of each shot. While they’re at it why don’t they remove every ‘shot’ that actually just a pass to the goalie to get a faceoff in the opposing zone? The Canucks don’t care about shots on goal. They appear to have a shooting strategy where they attempt to make the best shot available only if it’s available. If it’s not why turn the puck over? Like you said, getting outshot seems to be a plan.

    Canucks: Better goaltending, even with their rookie goalie. Silovs carried that third period by a lot. We all know goaltending is huge in the playoffs for a deep run.
    Canucks: More depth. All lines are producing. Another thing that is huge in the playoffs.
    Canucks: More physical. This is one thing they really lacked in 2011 which screwed them vs Boston. Now they have it, and once again, big part of doing well in the playoffs.
    Canucks: Better defense. Edmonton is much better than they were a few years ago but still not a top defense team.
    Oilers: More star players, better top line. This is all they really have though, and they rely too much on their top 6 players. You can see this by the team stats in the playoffs. Edmonton have several players in the top 10 points and goal scorers. Canucks have none.

    2:15 What constitutes a trade deadline trade nowadays? Big Zed was a Canuck by late November and Lindholm was traded in late January. Trade deadline was March 8. Sorry if I'm being picky, but let's use the right wording when describing stuff like this.
    3:28 "Toronto" speaking positively about the Canucks? Neat!
    5:30 That was my reaction.. lol
    10:34 As a Canucks fan, I'm telling Oilers fans that look, the Canucks are under very little pressure to win this series, thanks in part to the unreasonable expectations the hockey media and odds makers put on the Oil to plow through the Canucks. Canucks are having fun. Canucks fans are having fun. Their bluechip forward is locked up long term (hopefully Petts actually is injured to some limiting extent, and he isn't just choking). Their cap hell is coming to an end with the new management regime. Meanwhile the Oilers have TWO all-world players who need to win now, or itchy feet may set in sooner than the Oilers think. If they don't make it to the big dance this year, they absolutely have to make a blockbuster trade to acquire a Vezina-nominated level goalie. They are running out of time.
    11:22 Not a winnable argument, given the BALANCED depth the Canucks have. Unless the argument is, "Silovs isn't allowed to be this good" then ok, understood.
    16:25 Agreed. I said it the moment I realized it'd be Oilers vs Canucks. This is going to be a banger of a series. But NOOOOOOO, the talking heads were all, "Welp, Oilers are gonna roll over them like they're pylons." Shots on goal don't mean much if you aren't getting enough quality chances. No Soucy tonight, so maybe this is their shot to get in close.
    I expect the Oilers to win tonight. Handily? Meh, maybe. They do have to make this a statement game at home. Canucks haven't lost on the road so far in these playoffs and were among the best for winning on the road this season. It's up to the Oilers to change the narrative.

    To say that the Oilers whiffed massively on the Nurse contract is a tremendous understatement. Holy cow! That WCF series against the Avs he got entirely exposed for being massively overpaid. But, that's what you get when not many players want to stay in Canada. The ones that do will demand big money, even if they're not worth it.

    If marquee talent was a key success factor in the playoffs, the McDavid Oilers would have three cups by now. Vancouver is winning, and will likely win the series, because of better defence, better overall depth, and better goaltending, which are key success factors in the playoffs over having the top offensive forwards.

    As long as the NHL doesn't suspend half of the Canucks defense, they're deeper at almost every position, including in goal, than the Oilers. Edmonton has 2 fantastic players and 2-4 good players and after that, there's a huge drop off. Depth scoring is nonexistent and they have no goaltending. The Oilers have to rely on McDavid and Draisaitl dominating and getting favourable calls from referees. They're like the Canucks in 2003 and 2004. That's why they have to play their top 2 forwards every other shift to give themselves a chance. You can't win a Cup that way. You might be able to get to a Conference Final, but Dallas and Colorado are too deep and will destroy the Oilers if they get there. Depth is everything in the playoffs.

    • @toedrag-release
      @toedrag-release 29 дней назад

      I agree, Edmonton is tooo top heavy of a team which will never win a cup. The only way that could possibly work is if you have an elite goaltender which Edmonton tried to have with Campbell but backfired. That being said Edmonton has had more puck possession, more offensive zone time, more shots than Vancouver and really has outplayed Vancouver more often in the series than not. Neither Edmonton nor Vancouver has what it takes to win a cup TBH. They'll be lucky to even make it to 6 games with Dallas

    If NHL "super stars" want to win cups, they need to be aware that that $3m from 12-15 or 9-12 can be massively impactful to the team's chances of filling out the roster.
    McDavid is worth $15m in the current market value, however does he need it? If he takes $12m or even $10m, that opens up a lot of scope for signing good GK and D. Will he notice that $3-6m in his bank account?! If you gave him a choice to pay $3m for a Cup ring...would he take it?
