  • A look at the legacy of Peoria players becoming Fighting Illini. Many Peoria players donned the Orange and Blue prior to 1993, including Illini greats like Derek Holcombe (1979-81), Mark Smith (1978-81), Tony Wysinger (1984-87).
However, when Jerry Hester started his Illini career in 1993-94, it started a 20 year run of Peoria players representing the Fighting Illini - including Sergio McClain, Marcus Griffin, Frank Williams, Jerrance Howard, Brian Randle, Bill Cole, D.J. Richardson.
Now after three years without any Peoria representation on the roster, Peoria Manual's DaMonte Williams, son of Illini great Frank Williams, will suit up for Illinois next season.

Growing up in Peoria was great, then moving away really affecting me In the worst way. Peoria will always be home regardless of anything.

What a group those three were, shame that none of them showed up in the elite eight against Arizona. Had we made the final four that year who knows what would’ve happened. We’d already played Duke close earlier in the year in North Carolina.

Jamar Smith went on to be one of the greatest European players ever. Shaun was an NBA Champion!

If I remember correctly, Livingston had committed to Duke. I could be wrong though.

CLUTCH_AND STICK yep he was committed to duke before opting for the draft, where he was selected fourth. I wasnt implying he was a part of the pipeline I was just pointing out for such a small city Peoria has plenty of hoopers.

Peoria, Illinois high school Manual brought it and was the first to win four state rings in a row. Also, the Chicago Bulls was winning and ruling the NBA. Illinois basketball speaks for itself and the world know it.

Perhaps if Doug Lee and Ivan Stone had all ended up there, you can't say enough about synergy. Ivan ended up at Lamar Univ with another guy I know named Tony Todd(Lamar/UNLV). Simultaneously, I watched in amazement from California as Doug Lee (NBA-NJN) gave a young, pre-Moses Malone trained Hakeem Olajuwon 18pts when he was at Texas A&M before transferring to Purdue. All very nice guys to have on your NCAA team. You can't say enough about synergy and court time which is why Manual performs at well year in/ year out. We had not a snow ball's chance in Hell of beating them in Jr High and it wasn't until we went to Central with guys from Lincoln, Franklin, Sterling, et al did we ever have any success against them.
I saw the same phenomenon when I left Peoria to go to HS in San Diego. SDSU NEVER to this day never gets most of it's best home grown talent. During the Wysinger Altenberger years period SDSU had Chris Dudley (Yale Univ NBA-NYK) and others go to DePaul, Chicago St, Lamar, Xavier, UNC-Charlotte et al right under their nose. That trend continued with Judd Buechler(NBA-CHI), and Tony Clark (MLB-DET) both playing basketball at the University of Az. as well as my Dude Darnell Woods, big Dave Willard and Chris Jeter all ending up at UNLV. We're greater together than any one of Us ever will be apart. #IPLAY4PEORIA
