That prop is toast! I think it’s the weight you have in the boat. Everything on the motor sounds fine. Watching you figure it out is fun! Take care of that sciatica!

i did the same thing with my most favorite motor, a 30hp 1988 Evinrude. I said to myself, "I guess I'd best check my gear lube, although I KNOW it is going to be just fine." It was low, black and smelled. At least there was no water in it. I was ashamed of myself for letting that happen......... Fortunately, no harm done.
Glad you confirmed the hub is slipping. Check that one off your list.

Most prop repair shops can press out that hub and press a new rubber one in. They just hold with friction and once that rubber gets old and hard they let go.
Yeah. I cant find a part number for that hub. Schematic doesn't even show a hub. Thanks again !
I knew that sucker had a spun hub! So I guess you’ll be trying some different prop choices in future episodes? That motor is sweet. When you have it running at max RPM it sounds fantastic! Makes me want to go boating, but it’s winter here in NJ. At least I can live vicariously through your videos until spring! Catch you in the next one!

I’ve had pretty good luck using super glue on the hub as long as it’s not wobbly on the bushing. I take 4-6 small. finish nails and clip some vise grips on each one and use a generous amount of glue on the point where the rubber meets the hub and then the prop and push them down in the gap quickly before it’s sets up. I have one that has lasted for years. Of course the hub is meant to spin out to prevent damage to the gear case but a poor man can t keep buying props every season. Real life saga BABY !!

Poor guy. I feel sorry for you driving yourself nuts over the speed difference. I thought I had a spun prop once and an old outboard guy told me to make a mark on the rubber and one next to it on the metal part of the prop.
Turned out it was weight in the front of the boat had my prop in an air pocket behind the he boat at high speed

I believe my merc 60hp has a spun hub and when I throttled down in the lake it made a ticking noise which I don't think a spun prop would make? Have you heard this sound before? It sounded almost like the flywheel key broke?
Hey Tim. Yeah I have, and on this motor. It would do like 3 click like sounds when I throttled down fast. If was from changing the idle timing every time I swapped the 60/70 hp carbs. I would adjust it different for both sets and then forget to readjust it back when swapping them again. It's still a little messed up from all the swaps. It doesn't click anymore but I really need to put the timing light on it. Might be a similar situation ? Thanks again !
I think what I'll do first is put a new impeller on and put a timing light on the flywheel. That will tell me right away if the key broke being time timing Mark's will be of.

When propping for best performance
1: verify all carbs are at full open at wide open setting.
2: is timing correct
3: prop to upper end of range with light load. 5 to 6k for 3cyl 60hp. So with just you and 3/4 fuel load 58 to 6000 with optimum trim setting.
Speed is really irrelevant. If it’s just going to be only you and your above 5500 you could go up to 21 p and gain some mph but you sacrifice low end.
What’ll kill an engine is low wot rpm and heavy load especially on Jo/Ev 3 cyl 60&70s

Just a thought, what was the temperature of the water when you got the highest speed? The warmer the water the better the speed. Water gets more dense as it cools. I’m only saying that because you have been troubleshooting for a long time, maybe you can include the temp in your process.

@@fastwin493 I guess I’m going to disagree, because in cold water the viscosity of the water increases which has the net effect of increasing friction between the water and the boat and thereby decreasing speed. Good discussion

yep, spun hub for sure. If you're going to run it up to top end you need a new one to last. Also, a beat-up prop can vibrate itself to death

I have that same problem with the waders, but I just go in my diaper. 😂 It looks like the motor is moving up and down at speed, prop spin also? Your nerve is being pinched as it goes through the glute muscle so when your getting bounced around on a boat, not helping.

If I were you, doing what you’re doing I Wouldn’t be able to sleep.
Hypothetically, no matter what boat or engine…if your WOT is supposed to be 6000RPM you need to address the prop Size and Pitch to achieve that RPM without exceeding it.
Don’t just change your pitch; change your size and even rake. But all of this costs money!
BEST WAY TO PICK YOUR PROP - Contact a Prop Shop or manufacturer. They will ask you a few questions and should be able to point you in the right direction. Then, find that size prop. Used, rebuilt or new it will cost you something. But it will rid you of all the headaches you have been dealing with.

There are calculators online but if you dont know what the boat weighs it's a waste of time. Just guessing they're giving me the same 13 x 19 but nobody ever mentions Rake which is what I'm finding out with the original prop that spun out. Stay tuned for the upcoming episodes, they

Your more apt to have hub slippage under load when you coming out of the hole: Looks like to me you have a cavitation issue,,,,,👍 -.
I thought his cavitation plate looked higher than the bottom of the boat when he was talking about storing it with/without prop out of the water. TOO has been around a longtime, one of the first things old-timers look at mounting an outboard, told myself nah, I was seeing things.

Pulled the upper vent/fill screw. Even though it's above the oil line it still has oil on it to tell if it's bad/foamy.
