The Band of the Brigade of Gurkhas 2011 Virginia International Tattoo Performed at the Scope Arena in Norfolk, VA. April 28th through May 1st www.vafest.org/...
I wonder if the Americans watching actually knew that these guys are the most superb soldiers....and why? I was RM Commando but spent time with the Gurkha's. More socially than combat. They impressed the heck out of me.
during the Falklands war a whole regiment or argentinans dropped their weapons and fled when they heard the Royal Gurkha Rifles were forming up for an attack! wouldn't want to be on the wrong side of these Bravest of the Brave.
Back in 1966 as a17 year old cadet, I saw the Gurkhas perform at the old Royal Military Tattoo in London. The sight and sound of the band playing at full blast while marching at Light Infantry double pace (i.e. effectively fast jogging) was unforgettable and remains with me to this day. Ayo Gurkhali !!!
To give you some context about how hard these soldiers are. When the Japanese invaded India and attempted to take Kohima and Imphal, 2,000 of them went up against a 9,000 strong army. They launched their attack early in the morning shortly before the sun had risen, up a mountain, into a well dug in Japanese force. By noon, they'd routed the entire army off the hills.
The "Khukri Dance" march seems to be based on a Nepali song "Lahu Re Limaye". The Indian Army has another march "Vir Gorkha" which is also a variation of the same one. Both these tunes are available for listening on the Internet.
I have a Kukri given to my late Father as he was stationed in Nepal 🇳🇵 from 1971 1972 building a road from Dharan to Jogbani, the Gurkas never walk into battle but run .
I think it's the intro of a really old Nepalese song - which is distinct from 4:11 onwards.....the song is called ' lahure ko relimai ' and one very old version of it is also in youtube.....
Ha.....No they were training one place we were and I spent evenings with them eating awesome food and chatting about Himalayan mountains and hacking the heads off things. They like that a lot BTW.
Sadly, due to UK defense budget cuts, we have lost much of the brigade of Gurkhas. Also sadly the Rifles band is not a patch on the light division bands of the Royal Green Jackets and the Light Infantry - The brigade of Gurkhas band does not have any women or fatties, as a result thier display is far superior crisper.
