Steve Sutcliffe is an outstanding presenter. He can drive, is extremely articulate and gives you all the information you might want about the car he is reviewing. I drove one of these things and it is incredibly composed and bloody fast for an SUV. It does not feel like a sports car - too large - but Porsche has done a masterful job making it as close to a sports car as the laws of physics will permit.
I respect the presenter as he is a great pilot as well a brilliant speaker. He appears to have a lot of knowledge and understanding for what enthusiasts seek after in their cars. Good job hiring this fellow.
I don't think it's pointless, I think it might be one of the greatest all around cars ever. hear me out. I live in NY there's some snow but most of all there's salt in the winter, there's no way I'm putting a 911 through that cause of the ground clearance. This thing has all the advantages of an suv plus great handling maybe not sporty enough for track days but certainly enough for twisty mountain roads, and enough power to make you smile, good looks in and out, makes a great noise, and porsche reliability and badge. it might not be an all out sportscar but 98% percent of the time it'll be just as good, and when you have to tow, avoid snow/salt, good mpg's, bring friends along or just ride comfortably in shitty nyc streets it's the best. A macan and my motorcycle and I'm all set.
One of these on-line sights ran a Macan and Cayman together. They are aimed at the same people though with slightly different priorities. Very comparable which is amazing when you appreciate that this is an suv. Moey? If you have to ask...
I love my Macan Turbo. I let my brother borrow it when he was moving back to Houston and he needed a ride to go house shopping. He called it "easy speed".
Looks better than a Cayenne, drives better than a Cayenne, as fast or faster than a Cayenne, cheaper than a Cayenne. Why would you then shop a Cayenne? To carry an extra baby stroller? At this price point I think the Macan may be Porsche's "best buy" alongside the Cayman. Im not even sure Id be interested in the Turbo. The Macan S with 340HP is $15,000 cheaper. Thats a huge premium for 60 ponies.
"You're not allowed to drift.". This event organizers or engineers in Porsche are idiots. A SUV that drifts and handles great and Autocar is doing a review which is going to be seen by few hyndred thousands people, some of them potential buyers. This is better advertisement than any money spent on TV commercial, yet they forbid drifting. LOL
Drifting is strictly verboten! You vill comply! Germans engineer such awesome things (I own BMWs, Sig Sauers and Miele products) and they are such killjoys at the same time... Sigh.
Unless they produce the Grand Tourismo, this is most likely going to replace our snow mobile... and I definitively will appreciate its balance ;). Great to see you take the car to the limit instead of following orders ;)
To all the geniuses and car experts here who don't appreciate the Macan or don't see the point - just don't fucking buy it. If you want to bitch about the price - don't buy it - or maybe you already cannot afford it. Thousands of smart driving enthusiasts will.
Lol. Steve Sucliffe, having driven an F1 car quite successfully, is told by some kid not to drift, "because it is really slippery and we have rain tires on the car". Lol.
I wonder why in the world didn't allow anyone to go sideways, after all they are trying to tell us that this one is as versatile as it can come, sporty and roomy! Come on Porsche let the fun be unleashed!!!!
For those who don't want something as big as the Cayenne, but need more room and utility than just a Porsche coupe or Sedan, this is the perfect fit. I've driven base turbo (S) and Turbo (badged) models and they both put the AudiQ5 to shame. As well, the performance variance between the two is not so significant that I would spend the extra bucks for the larger turbo engine. The S model delivers just fine for such a little difference in "kick". Fun as hell to drive and gives me the option to enjoy owning and driving a Porsche without giving up being able to haul family and cargo when needed. Why buy two cars, when you can have both sports and utility in one? I'm buying the S this weekend and really excited about it. Oh -- and P.S. Autocar people, if you're going to review vehicles for a living, learn to pronounce their names correctly. it's Poor-SHUH, not Poor-shh.
0:14 LOL, according to porch.... Sounds terrible, porch and Porsche are completely different things. Porsche means perfection in German, porch doesn't make any sense.
Great car, Looks lovely not just on the inside but also on the outside. Makes sense to put a V6 on the Macan but really not a fan of the v6 on the Cayenne, doesn't matter what the performance is on paper, it's a big SUV and it felt natural to have a v8 on it. hope they go back to the bigger engines on the next generation Cayenne. Test drove the Macan S, nice car, but the Turbo is nicer.
Good review Steve. Correct me if i'm wrong, but it's called Macan because it derives from the Indonesian word that means tiger. Thus, the proper way of saying it is Ma-Chan, instead of Ma-kan. Makan means eat in Indonesian.
I just might get the notion, that Porsche is changing "their ways". But before everybody choirs, that it drives better than the Cayenne - lets wait for the next "new" Cayenne... But anyways - maybe we will see a stronger Boxster and Cayman soon. Change take time - but since Wiedeking is gone, there are a lot of new impulses in Porsche... Would love to see a Cayman and Boxster Turbo [or GT3]...
Quentin S. it is the GTS version. I am really surprised, that I have posted this a couple of months ago, and now the GTS versions are ready to be shipped. I swear - nothing "leaked" to me... but I feel quite like a crystal ball!
Nice Vid. And a nice Porche it seems. Nice sound!? lol. this thing has nothing on a Cayenne V8 NA. But of course the turbo does dampen the engine noise quite a bit
Great review, but blow away a Cayman S in a straight line? I don't think so, get your scales out! And don't forget to then throw some sharper corners into the equation too :-D
Like with the Cayenne, I'm not a fan. I appreciate how good it is but I find it stupid. But I also understand these cars are necessary in order for us to have the amazing 911, Cayman and Boxster.
I remember a time when the boxster wasn't included in the Porsche cool club, I suppose its included now because they have really stepped that car up. As for as a cayenne I own one and its more practical every day car than a 911 and way more fun to drive than a range rover. I am assuming you've never drove one, test drive one and you'll see why they sell. Thanks Porsche for giving us fun and practicality.
Joshua Springer As you can see from my first post I do appreciate how good those cars are but I'm simply not a fan because I prefer sportscars to SUVs. If I was at a point when I needed speed and practicality I'd just buy an RS6.
I never thought I'd see the day when Cadillac's 3.6 TT is more powerful than a Porsche 3.6 TT. I'm not trying to compare apples and oranges here, just stating my observation.
Kindly elaborate why exactly you don't think it is a sports car and why it does not raise your heartbeat. I wonder if Infiniti FX50 does. This is sad about Macan. And thanks for this very interesting review!
What a nerd for reminding you not to drift! On another video published this week on the McLaren P1, the journalist asks the McLaren representative if he can "spank it on the circuit" and the reply is something like: of course you can, it's made for this. So for a priceless supercar prototype McLaren gives its blessing but for a worthless small SUV you can't play a little?
The regular 911s are a thing of beauty, but these SUV designs look really awkward. Macan isn't as bad as Cayenne, but design-wise I'd still prefer a Range Rover or Mercedes GLK or BMW X5.
If the Macan is the best sport SUV, how would it compare against a Mercedes A45AMG and BMW 135i? I think that would be interesting to see. Does the Macan cover those two cars and offer plus, the fact of being a SUV?
***** I would like to see the gap between the Macan and those two in terms of performance, to have an idea if it is worth to abdicate the better all around Macan instead a more "radical" solution...
Why do motoring 'journalists' think that most of their viewers are interested in a car's ability to go sideways? I suggest that that's exactly what most people DON'T want their car to do, whether accidentally or on purpose. It's narrow-minded to assume that just because a car can go sideways, that of course you're then definitely going to take it sideways. (and I say that as someone who has just bought, a Macan turbo, precisely for its 'boring' handling composure)
If the sq5 was lowered some, it might sell better. The USA version is on stilts compared to the euro one. SUVs with more car DNA and less truck DNA are the real hot sellers in the next few years. People want hatchbacks that sit a bit higher to convince themselves they are safer, and not driving a hatchback.
So, from what I've seen, all terrain tires doesn't mean WATER? What is all terrain tires? I'm lost... Having said that, I don't like the video, because it shows only highlights of the test. Top numbers, and an opinion from someone I don't know and couldn't possible respect. Because I DON'T KNOW THEM. Don't bother hating on me, this channel has nothing to offer me.
The fact they can put this much performance into their mini-ute just reminds me of how much the Cayman is throttled back versus the 911, and it makes me mad. Its all about market pricing and demographics. Shenanigans. Plus, no manual in either Macan? Sad.
"We've built a performance SUV (or 'sports car' if you're a delusional/uneducated member of the Porsche marketing department) that you can have fun in...BUT GOD HELP YOU IF YOU EVEN TRY!!!"
16000rpm Oh I'm not questioning the performance or the ability of the Cayenne or the Macan both of which I'm sure (with the proper engine option box ticked, of course) go like stink & handle brilliantly. But sorting the chassis & stuffing a powerful engine into SUV body does not a sports car make.
1880kg = 4136lbs... 0.0, that relatively little thing weighs about as much as a Charger R/T! I was expecting, you know, UNDER 3800lbs... and that is being generous.
I think many people buy expensive autos because they just want to associate with the finest things in motor world according to the best auto journalist. It does not matter whether they going to use its machinery capabilities or not, its just it will look good on them and maybe justify their dangerously speeding habit in public road
You would think by making the Macan so good, they would take a lot of sales away from the Cayenne. The Macan turbo is almost as fast as the Cayenne turbo and much cheaper.
Great video and probs to Porsche to make an undoubtedly great vehicle (especially that motor) - but I just don't get the appeal of these kinds of care, they are just too compromised in my opinion.
Sideways as always, is not been the first we see german tell not to drift, as seen with Chris Harris with a BMW if im not mistaken. Well about the Macan yes is nice, but SUV are good for people have a bigger status then others.

"Track dude... Germany makes the best the cars in the world, bar nun! However, you guys lost world war I, (you) lost world war II, not to mention the fact that you started both of them, so If I feel like drifting, I will bloody well #*$%ing drift!"
Lol..no drifting... really looks like an audI q5. Especially from the rear 3/4 views. I like that it's rwd bias... but most suv shoppers wont. As far as being miles ahead of other crossover wagons.. there is the audi sq5 in their own vw group brethren...and then the gla45 AMG. The AMG is 355hp from a turbo 4...also dct...sport suspension... down 40hp but only slower by point 2 seconds
Nice car if you can only afford one car to do it all and want the Porsche badge. As stated smaller and more fun than a cayenne and just as quick as even Porsche sports cars.
Great reviewer. This guy’s a breath of fresh air. Lovely calm commentary. No irritating over enthused hysteria of other reviewers......
Steve Sutcliffe is an outstanding presenter. He can drive, is extremely articulate and gives you all the information you might want about the car he is reviewing. I drove one of these things and it is incredibly composed and bloody fast for an SUV. It does not feel like a sports car - too large - but Porsche has done a masterful job making it as close to a sports car as the laws of physics will permit.
i agree. one hell of a driver. He owned that track
One of the best in par with Chris Harris although Chris has a more drama to its reviews.
It's good to see that Porsche is putting the proper paddles on their multifunction steering wheels. The push-pull buttons were ridiculous.
Sutcliffe is the man, thanks for giving it a proper test for all of us... been looking for a video of you in this car, glad I found it!
4:22 hahah "I just wanted to do a little Chris Harris :( " xD
I respect the presenter as he is a great pilot as well a brilliant speaker. He appears to have a lot of knowledge and understanding for what enthusiasts seek after in their cars. Good job hiring this fellow.

The launch control sounded a bit like a baby Aventador :)
It's a pretty sick car. It feels more like a large four-door hatchback than an SUV
Bought one and love it more each time I drive it! You're review is right on.
Do you still have it Tim?
Any long term problems ?
@@giuistefanjr72 Still have it. On my 3rd transfer case at 15k miles.
I love my Macan Turbo. I let my brother borrow it when he was moving back to Houston and he needed a ride to go house shopping. He called it "easy speed".
always enjoy watching your reviews. Beautiful car, Can't wait to see the New Cayenne in a few years.

An ECU tune could get you that for much, much less!
Imagine if Chris Harris drove that.. he'd be escorted off the premises
hahaha, yeah he'd probably be taken out a shot at dawn! LOL!
"You're not allowed to drift.". This event organizers or engineers in Porsche are idiots. Before you people judge this car, maybe you should drive on!! this car drives absolutely crazy and its not a hatchback at all its a real small SUV!!
Nobody puts Sutcliffe in a corner. Haha freakin uptight porsche, let um flog it
Drifting is strictly verboten!
You vill comply!
Germans engineer such awesome things (I own BMWs, Sig Sauers and Miele products) and they are such killjoys at the same time...
Sigh.
He got told off for having a little bit of fun, guy had a proper go at him too! I love Braun products, completely unrelated I know!
curious what the difference in lap time is between porsche 911 turbo en macan turbo, Small Suv VS. sports car.
best luxury compact suv ever
Wow, so much Power....
Greetings Roland
this car is beautiful.
Unless they produce the Grand Tourismo, this is most likely going to replace our snow mobile... and I definitively will appreciate its balance ;). Great to see you take the car to the limit instead of following orders ;)
Nice video, well presented and an excellent account of the Macan. Hoping to buy one soon.
Did it have PDCC activated ? Looked like a ton more bodyroll than on the Cayenne Turbo / GTS.
To all the geniuses and car experts here who don't appreciate the Macan or don't see the point - just don't fucking buy it. If you want to bitch about the price - don't buy it - or maybe you already cannot afford it. Thousands of smart driving enthusiasts will.
that chrono thing on the dash is hilarious !
4:21 - Turbocharged window motor?
Fantastic car. Not too big, handles well but could do with more power, really!
Lol. Steve Sucliffe, having driven an F1 car quite successfully, is told by some kid not to drift, "because it is really slippery and we have rain tires on the car". Lol.
Great job Porsche! I'm not a SUV fan, but this thing is really got me thinking. Damn!
I wonder why in the world didn't allow anyone to go sideways, after all they are trying to tell us that this one is as versatile as it can come, sporty and roomy! Come on Porsche let the fun be unleashed!!!!

@ 1:30 Launch control is absolute key to SUV, just as rock climb is essential to a VW Bug.

Do that with the Mclaren P1 "A Proper Review"
...head over to motortrend, they have "a proper review"...
ViRuSTriNiTy head over to chris harris' video about the p1, it's 28 min of great review ;)
gianhet
yes, sorry. i meant /drive with chris...
Macan? Sounds like a type of pastry.
It´s Indoniese, and means fearless tiger.
axel Jané
in india it means "House"
it reminds me of coffee :P
axel Jané Thats what Porsche meant to associate with the name Macan.
Finaly autocar on 1080p :D
yep they have used 1080p for a few weeks now
Keep getting told off by German engineers after ignoring them and I'll keep hitting the "like" button!
I'd like to see a hybrid version of this car with two motors: one which runs on oil shale and the other which runs on mazut.
Good review Steve. Correct me if i'm wrong, but it's called Macan because it derives from the Indonesian word that means tiger. Thus, the proper way of saying it is Ma-Chan, instead of Ma-kan. Makan means eat in Indonesian.

how does it feel off road ?!
I prefer this tester to virtually all the others on here, common sense all the way.
I love that you got your ass chewed for drifting, well done lol

looking forward to the day I drive mine, it won't be long now.

I think the GLK is ugly as fuck. But i really like the design of a M class.
Mitchel van den Berge lol… GLK looks like steam engine..
If the Macan is the best sport SUV, how would it compare against a Mercedes A45AMG and BMW 135i?
I think that would be interesting to see. Does the Macan cover those two cars and offer plus, the fact of being a SUV?
You have to take the GLA45 to compare since its a under a SUV cat
Adam Merc That is why I would like to see how good is the Macan, when comparing it with the best hot hatch.
***** I would like to see the gap between the Macan and those two in terms of performance, to have an idea if it is worth to abdicate the better all around Macan instead a more "radical" solution...
Are these as reliable as I hope they are ?......
LMAOOOO "plz no drifting" ahaha
I want this car but with 5 litre supercharged. 3.6 L to small for a 1800kg 4x4
Why do motoring 'journalists' think that most of their viewers are interested in a car's ability to go sideways? for what your getting thats one hell of a price point
very keen to buy one of these...
The turbo might be kinda pointless but what the hell. the diesel seems like the responsible one to buy

i want one in gun metal grey pls
Pretty sweet ride.
Porsche really could make some great small/medium sport sedans if they wanted.
That is the same thing most of the people told when the Cayenne came on production. The Cayenne goes like a proper sportscar.
16000rpm
Oh I'm not questioning the performance or the ability of the Cayenne or the Macan both of which I'm sure (with the proper engine option box ticked, of course) go like stink & handle brilliantly. But sorting the chassis & stuffing a powerful engine into SUV body does not a sports car make.
Yes, but equally fun as one and is as good as one.
1880kg = 4136lbs... 0.0, that relatively little thing weighs about as much as a Charger R/T! I was expecting, you know, UNDER 3800lbs... and that is being generous.
Only a German would say that is wrong to drift a 400 hp twin turbo vehicle. Party pooper!
nice review!! but the car is hard to justify!!
Audi should make RS Q5 with 430 Ps 3.0 TFSI now.
BMW X5/M or a X6/M would eat that porshe 507 bhp... and spend 3 times as much fuel but it would kill that porshe "i feel a drag race coming on"
So, why not a cayman turbo.and turbo S?
CUV not an SUV, people need to stop getting suckered in by companies falsely presenting thier car!
Telling Sutcliffe not to drift is like cutting off 4 cylinders of the V6! Completely uncool,@Porsche!
I feel like the design of the rear needs some work
Great video and probs to Porsche to make an undoubtedly great vehicle (especially that motor) - but I just don't get the appeal of these kinds of care, they are just too compromised in my opinion.
Who do you think you are kidding Mr Porsche, if you think old Sutcliffe's done………….
very nice
No sideways?! - No life!
Sideways as always, is not been the first we see german tell not to drift, as seen with Chris Harris with a BMW if im not mistaken. Well about the Macan yes is nice, but SUV are good for people have a bigger status then others.

You are not authorized to drift… LOL
The best off roader is the Range Rover, better looking, better in side the best off road, it can do all the things a off roader should do
I really like it!
How about a Macan Turbo S
There isn't one. There is a performance pack though
"Track dude... Germany makes the best the cars in the world, bar nun! However, you guys lost world war I, (you) lost world war II, not to mention the fact that you started both of them, so If I feel like drifting, I will bloody well #*$%ing drift!"
I'd rather use the money to buy an M5. Why buy a 'sporty' off-road SUV? It makes no sense. A fast and practical 5-seater super saloon would be better.
From when we call almost 2 tone SUV small???
The best 👌🏻
dam that thing launches quick! i sad that i'm loving it this much...there goes my manhood =(
Lol..no drifting... really looks like an audI q5. Especially from the rear 3/4 views. I like that it's rwd bias... but most suv shoppers wont. Nice car if you can only afford one car to do it all and want the Porsche badge. As stated smaller and more fun than a cayenne and just as quick as even Porsche sports cars.
They should be happy that it can be drifted and not flip over.
Lol, "launch control absolutely key in an SUV"...no that's not the case for the last decade but Porsche is just redefining the "sport" in SUV.
