Thank you for this video I liked and subbed. I'm new to photography but my first impression was this. Feel like the 20mm is a good looking fun lens, great for capturing vibes between subject and surrounding (maybe even good for selfies), 35 is a natural lens and 85 is high detail for most beautiful closeups or cinematic feel. I didn't like the 50 at all.
I took my camera into a local store to try our the lens for different purposes and get a feel. I loved the 85mm instantly. I'll be heading back this weekend to pick one up for stills. Based on this. The 35mm is worth a look too. Thanks for the tips.
Great review. I really like the 20. 1.8 for video and also landscape photography it is super sharp! My 85 1.8 is great for portraits! Looking forward to getting a 35 for street photography next!
With lens comparison videos, I always hear much discussion about the background separation, the bokeh, and the compression effect. However, very rarely do I ever hear a discussion about how the subject-lens distance affects the appearance of the subject of the portrait, namely the model. This is rather odd, since it is the subject-lens distance that directly affects the model's appearance and NOT the focal length of the lens itself. The focal length of a lens is its magnification factor that impacts the framing in the viewfinder of the camera. The longer the focal length, the more zoomed in. However, the zooming in or out is not what impacts the perspective of the subject, the apparent shape of their face, the balance between nose size and ear size, etc. And yet, all of this is completely ignored in almost all lens comparison videos. Therefore, I would like to comment that closer subject-lens distances result in images wherein the subject is rendered narrower and thinner. Further subject-lens distances result in images wherein the subject is rendered broader and more substantial (fatter). It is very common for portraits taken with an 85mm lens to appear LESS flattering to most women than those taken with a 35mm or 50mm lens. And this is simply due to the fact that 85mm lenses are generally used further away from the subject than 35 or 50mm lenses, and this increased subject-lens distance is what causes this effect. Unfortunately, for millions of typical women, portrait photographers have been routinely told that the 85, 90, 100, 105, and 135mm lenses are "portrait" lenses. But what the lens companies conveniently forgot to mention to the photographers was the fact that these longer focal lengths and correspondingly longer shooting distances are flattering to supermodels with a BMI of 15 - 18, but are certainly not flattering to the average American woman with a BMI of 20 - 30, or more. So if your specialty is shooting 100 pound supermodels or scrawny men, then by all means get yourself an 85mm or 100mm lens, stand back, and fire away. However, if you are shooting the other 98% of women, then get yourself a 35mm or 50mm lens, stand a bit closer to your subject, and make your subject happy with their appearance. I am a fashion photographer who's 30 year career has been shooting strictly lingerie, so I do shoot supermodels every week, but these are not your typical women. And I feel really bad that so many healthy women are disheartened by their appearance in portraits because so many photographers are using an unflattering shooting distance and their 85mm "portrait" lens.
I'd pick your main... 35 or 50...they are on both sides of "normal" which is 43mm... I run a 20/35/40(pancake)/85 and skip the 50. Also have a 24-70 if necessary.
I own all those lenses for my Z6ii. However, when traveling, instead of carting all that glass, I bring a Z24-120 zoom. It is not the same but its close enough. Thanks for posting your video.
1- If you seek sharp couple images, They need to place exactly at the same distance from the camera. 2- Try to make it f2.8 if rule nb/1 didn't work Focus areas does not help in your case. However, I use center focus area, and I move it using the thumb when needed. Cheers

I keep chaning my gear very while to test other lenses. However, below is my best lenses that I never swap... Tamron 17-28mm f2.8 Tamron 28-200mm for travel Sony 20mm f1.8 for gimbal Sony 35mm f1.8 Sony 85mm f1.8 Sony 70-200mm f4 for event coverage
@@OmaGhomrawi You’ve swayed me to the 35 + 85 combo. With the possibility of 20 as a vlogging lens or luxury extra wide. I am between the Samyang 35mm 1.8 (which from your review looks like the best value) or splurging for the 1.4 GM. For the 85 I’m between the value Sony 1.8 or splurging on the new Sigma 1.4 DG DN. Only lens throwing me into a conundrum is the 65mm f2 from sigma. There’s something about it I really like but I don’t know if it’ll pair well with a 35 or the 20.
@@MarkStCyr consider Tokina 85mm f1.8 if the extra weight is no issue for you. It has the same image quality as the sony 85mm f1.8 and 30 percent cheaper. The samyang 35mm f1.8 is good value for the price. And the 20mm f1.8 is the sharpest prime f1.8 wide open I personally don’t prefer getting f1.4 lenses because they are heavy
Super interesting, Oma and I appreciate how much work you put into making this comparison video. I have the 55 instead of the 50 and love it as a walk around lens. I am still trying to gel on with the 35 focal length as I find it just a little boring for the way I look at things. I am toying with getting the 20 G as my "final" prime and was interested in your remarks regarding your feelings about it. Seems that it would be a good fit for a F1.8 prime lens kit.
after testing all these lenses.. I probably would stick with the 20, 50, and 85mm I made a review earlier for Viltrox 50mm f1.8 and I do recommend the lens instead for the sony 50mm f1.8. It's waaay better
The sony 55mm f1.8 is razor sharp and light and compact. 35 mm 1.8mm isnt wide enough to capture landscape, also very old lens so slower focus. The 20mm f1.8 ultra wide is perfect, new and dual linear motor focus. I carry the 55mm and 20mm f1.8. 85mm blows out the background unless you want portraits with no indication of your travel location. Also the subject can look pleasing if you have them stand further away on 20mm. I would do closeups on 55mm since its what our eyes see. The 85 portrait distorts the face causing smaller nose. The 20mm portrait causes bigger nose. I would use only 50mm for portraits. And 20mm for subjects away from lens.
Fortunally, we're lucky to have the luxury buying all theses lenses to test. Many others are on budget and this video can help them to make up their minds.
People are used to stretched out limbs and big noses these days, thanks to smartphone photography, but if I had to pick just one I'd go with 50mm. The 30mm APS-C Sigma is also nice focal length, but I have given up on finding that on FF.

Its so annoying seeing all these professional youtube photographers pronouncing it incorrectly and then getting all high and mighty when you point it out to them. When I switched from my Sony a6000 to the a7 iii, my first full frame lens was a Rokinon 35mm 1.4, then I got the Sony 85mm 1.8, and it's def my favorite lens for portraits. More recently, I bought the Tamron 20mm 2.8 because sometimes the 35mm is not wide enough for me and I love the more dramatic and distorted images you can get from it. Sometimes I think of selling the 35mm or maybe just adding a 50mm 1.8 to my kit.
