Definitely doesn't hurt, but you still need to understand light and composition. Don't get me wrong, a beautiful model creates that visual interest that attracts the viewers eye, but a beautifully composed and lit photograph will keep them looking at the photograph.
A 35 mm focal length is good for environmental portraits where you want to show the subject and a specific environment. For example, this lovely lady riding a bicycle on a trail.
video shows a good example of incorporating patterns around the subjects head by using the ground. Patterns makes the photo more interesting and is a good compositional idea.
Fantastic . Love your approach to make everything so easy to understand ( putting it into practice not so easy ,for me anyway) . Everyday is a school day, thank you for your awesome videos 👍
I wanna know how you edited the photos. The way you showed each and every detail and the settings to click a perfect shot is amazing. Will surely try them 😊❤
'Love your "walking around" photo-shoot videos, Pye. This one at Wossamotta U., aka, Chapman University, shows what great locations college campuses can be.
Great place to photograph next time I'll make sure to bring a model as I love to photograph Orange my favorite small town to photograph so many opportunities for good pictures
The problem when you get too far away from your subject with a 35 mm is it pushes that subject away and makes them look very small in the frame. This is where a longer focal length can help magnify the subject when you’re further away from it. however, if you’re looking to make the subject appear small and isolated then back to the shop 20 feet away with a 35 mm with nothing in the frame except for walls and ground will make that subject appear lonely and isolated.
Great stuff the tech and creative philosophy. One suggestion, if you would please, fade the music after your under way please? The repetitive nature I’m sorry to say is really distracting. I’d much rather hear only you during the majority of your teaching. But still Great stuff. Thank you. Scott
Interesting tutorial, as usual Pye. Curiosity: Why are you using such "muddy colors" in the first 2 shots? Do you like it? could be my monitor showing me a too warm image.. I don't know. Often When I see new Canon results it seems to me too much in the warm yellow-brown side. Let me know if you can. thanks
Been doing this in NYC for 20+ years. The difference is I let the Model decide where. Where she physically stops is the 'exact' location we get the photo. Sometimes one foot would be in the shade and the other would be in the sun. It was up to me to get a pro shot. Have fun.
I've followed all of your steps, tips, tricks, techniques but my photos were not upto your level - so I keep wondering why is that! - finally I discover the utter harsh reality which is not having a beautiful model. 😒
I have a EOS R, but not sure how you are shooting at a 50 ISO, mine only goes to 100 ISO before going into auto mode. Can you please explain how to achieve lower ISO on this camera.. Get tutorial BTW! 😁
So such outdoor portraits should be paired up with some other composition like leading lines or something interesting instead of just a plain background...
The only way 35 mm is going to work well for a Portrait is if you want negative space for a magazine or advertisement. For example, you plan to use words or other product images with the photo. Otherwise, a longer lens is much better for portraits. For example, 85 mm 100 mm 200 mm are all superior for portraits than a 35 mm.
Everything you did was great from compositions to lighting but then you changed all that great work into retouched junk when all you needed was a bit of fill in defused flash.
All of those photos are exactly the same, beauty Arabic (Alissa) face and grey background. There are absolutely lack of composition, pure minimalist. Photos shall be more diversificated.
Beautiful model = beautiful shots. That's the lesson

Pye is so phenomenally great not just as a photographer but as a teacher.
Great video and model.... She's a true professional that knows how to pose and follow directions.
35mm is my favorite focal length for portraits. I used to love 85mm but it got boring really quick since you are limited.
Thanks everyone for the kind words! We love that you are enjoying our one lens challenge series!
I love these photo challenges.
Awesome! Love to hear this type of feedback so we can make more content like it!
Wide, medium, tight is a great tip. Golden. I just hope I can remember to use it...

Love this! No bs, no gimmicks, this is straight up great advice from a pro, cheers Pye!
Thanks Pye for one more great video. Working with constraints and showing creativity 👍
5:32 The wall with bricks has always nice texture and with right DOF creates beautiful picture. The shot at 12:12+ is gorgeous!
Thank you Tom!

The last one is the best picture.
Love this series
Glad to hear it!
Great use of the Chapman campus!
Thank you great video
Muchas gracias.

Excellent demonstration shoot, loved the explanation, angles, attention to light, single lens discipline.
Much Appreciated entire team for your efforts to making this footage, truly it's been well pleased and motivating to all of us and including me.
Okay! I’m feeling the scruff! Great vid by the way. Shout out to SLR Lounge!
Great motivation for me since I just sold all my gear for the Fujifilm X100V.
Beautiful model! Alyssa bears a striking resemblance to a young Catherine Zeta-Jones.
Great series Pye. Thanks for some great ideas and inspiration!

Stunning Pye. 📸😷✌️
excelente, sencillo, magico y dupicable
Extremely useful!
I love the way you teach. Is it possible you could make a video on how you retouch these photos in Photoshop
Great stuff the tech and creative philosophy.

But still
Great stuff.
Thank you.

May I know what's the reason for using ISO 50 instead of 100 for first location yet the second location on ISO 100?
Interesting tutorial, as usual Pye.
Curiosity: Why are you using such "muddy colors" in the first 2 shots? Do you like it? could be my monitor showing me a too warm image.. I don't know. Often When I see new Canon results it seems to me too much in the warm yellow-brown side.
Let me know if you can. thanks
Why is the city totally void of any other forms of life except for you and Alyssa, and your cameraman?.... Great video by the way..
It was a college campus, they were closed.
The black and white option is beaut

Very useful tips.
Excellent video and informative
Great video, very inspirational.

@@slrlounge Wow! I like your channel, the more videos I look, the more I collect valuable information! 🔥🔥🔥

Kind of good video :-P
Very interesting, thanks!
Nailit
beautiful
This just let me know how much I have to learn 🤦♂️
Nice, planning to get my own 35 mm, yongnuo tho , lol
Yes! Over the years, this is my single favorite focal length - Pye
When using a 35, how close can you get to a subject's face without causing noticeable distortion?
I have a canon t7i. I wanna take pictures of street art but don’t know which lens to use
Use a 50mm or a 35mm
I have a EOS R, but not sure how you are shooting at a 50 ISO, mine only goes to 100 ISO before going into auto mode. Can you please explain how to achieve lower ISO on this camera..
Get tutorial BTW! 😁
I believe that the iso value L is 50 even if the camera doesn't say the number.
… nice Little ideas, but big effect! I Love your tips. From Berlin/Germany: ricksclixx

I ha e been using my 35mm
Sir why you Stop providing exercise files 🤔
👏👏👏👏🇮🇹🇮🇹

I think it works well for conveying a story by use of environment.
It's "lie" down, lol.
It is difficult for me to take photos with 35

POV please.

As a Photographer 35mm 1.4 is the GOD of lenses and if you say other wise your photography SUCKS!!!
Editing is so heavy it looks like she's a disney cartoon. thought we were over and done with the fake skin look???
Pye........that has to be one of your worst videos I have seen you do!! It was not only NOT Minimalist, it was bad street photography!
