- For most Hungarians, Peter Magyar was an unknown figure in Hungary until a few months ago, when he burst into the public eye. In February, a paedophile pardon scandal rocked Hungarian politics, leading to the resignation of Hungary’s former President, Katalin Novàk and of Magyar’s ex-wife, former Justice Minister Judit Varga. Magyar, who was on the government payroll and part of the inner circle of the ruling party Fidesz, is now running against the government for European elections, and he is drawing massive crowds. DW's Senior International Correspondent Fanny Facsar reports from his latest protest in Debrecen, a Fidesz stronghold.

@@martavdz4972 It all started when Péter Magyar released a voice tape of the former minister of Justice, Judit Varga, where she stated that other ministers, just like Antal Rogán modified classified documents, removing their names from them at their own will.

@@r2d2fromstartrek that is not where the story began. Péter Magyar gained attention when he resigned his positions and blamed Rogán for the forced resignation of his ex-wife on Facebook. He kept making similar posts, this resulted in the government-controlled media to attack him. He released the recording after that.
Just for the record, not only DW is way behind of the story, it's the same for all other big international news channels. It's partly because Peter Magyar has deliberately avoided talking to foreign news channels for months, since he didn't want to be accused of being financed from abroad. At the same time, I think foreign news agencies wanted to see first how big Mr Magyar can become before they would focus on his movement. I agree it was high time to deal with the topic as it's been ongoing since February and it's just getting bigger and bigger. Hope western media will catch up soon with Mr Magyar's movement since now there's a lot to talk about!!
Poland could do it but in Hungary's case it will be much more difficult to be back on track because all those changes done by Orban are much deeper.
Poland is being destroyed thanks to that election, serves as a wake up call to anyone considering “ moderate” candidates in Hungary
Also because most Hungarians are quite OK with whatever Orban does.
Well compared to Poland Hungary is still a secular state where women have their reproductive rights secured... Even Orban doesnt dare to play with such topics. I would be actually very sad if Hungary would ever follow Poland's footsteps in anything, because you guys are a little bit too fanatical.

At the moment, Orbán is the only responsible, normal-thinking politician in Europe, others are inciting war and thereby endangering the future and existence of Europe. Today's European leadership has turned against the original goals of the EU, such as prosperity, security and peace. None of these exist today.

"Magyar" means "Hungarian", by the way. I´m Czech, have met a lot of Hungarians and they were all great, and most of them didn´t like Orbán. And prime ministers should come and go in democracies. So if Magyar succeeds and moves Hungary from historical grudges and criticizing EU without suggesting solutions to lower inflation, lower prices and technology and things like that, I´ll be more than happy!
Yeah they dont like him but somehow he won multiple elections with 40-50% of the votes. I wonder how is the average intelligence of Hungarians + education there when i see this.
Solution for all the problems in EU for many Europeans is to close immigration into EU. Czech republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Poland are all driven by such understanding.
In future many of the countries in central and eastern Europe would end up with some sort of dictatorship. Then such measures could be implemented far easily.
Democracy in ex-socialist countries is a very recent phenomenon. It seems it may not last for too long.
Strange then, that Orban keeps on winning with 2/3 majority.... maybe you befriend the outliers....

We arent friendly with Putin or the Russians, we just see them as humans, while our western partners went a mile deep to dehumanize them. I dont think any nation deserves that treatment regardless of what they done.

You forgot to mention that he held the biggest rural demonstration in 10+ years in Hungary, what is shown on the last few frames. Approximietly 10-20k people gathered in Debrecen, in one of the biggest Fidesz strongholds

The problem for the Hungarians is that many Hungarians live, for example, in Romania, they can also vote and Viktor Orban supports them with a lot of public money.😢

In the Hungarian constitution is a basic law to care and support the hungarian minorities in the surrounding countries. You have hungarian name, why this problem for you...???

They are dual citizens, they have a registered address in Hungary and there is a difference between Hungarians living in the West and those living in Romania. Hungarians in Romania can vote locally, and Westerners can only vote at a consulate, which is usually several 100 kilometers away.

It is not for you to tell Hungarians what leaders they should have
It's not for u to tell someone either what they believe in when it comes to human rights and how they affect the way we live with each other. They apply to all of us, and all sorts of people in position of power have them in the palm of their hands in the even u havent noticed yet. There is always a line between dictating how others are supposed to live and expressing valid criticism towards a country cuz their politics decrease the chance for some basic global peace. Cuz we are all tired of living this way. My country isnt perfect. But people do whatever is in their democratic power to keep extremists of that degree from all sides away where they can. Not everyone but most. This is how u ensure longterm peace within a country. And therefore often neighboring countries. Try it. Works wonders💪
Also, i guess this is the problem. The thought that a person alone should be in charge of a country. Hungarians should be in charge of their country. In my neither-perfect country, we make use of a direct democracy for a reason. And we not alone. Power to lead must be distributed among citizens and different parties to a certain degree. One person/party alone in charge just shows they are powerhungry and at least a softcore-extremist of whatever values they alone chose to lead with. If there is no balance of power + no enforced set of values worthy to represent a country, then u get to this point right here. Hope made sense. Nice day👍

Although she is an ex-Hungarian, American reporter Ficsor fails to mention that Péter Magyar is a verbal and physical abuser of his wife (Minister of Judiciary, Judit Varga) as documented by police and ambulance reports. Mr. Magyar, as a highly paid insider, grossly benefitted the system of Orban before his scandalous betrayals. Consequently, his new Party (where he is vice-chairman) has only 19 members and his also never elected clique of 8 followers is an antidemocratic minority of the Party. Hungarians are motivated to protest the hardship of war raging in neighboring Ukraine.

Peter Magyar was unknown two month ago, but at the moment he is so well regerded by the population that he stands at about 25% in public opinion surveys. These surveys includes the population of the countriside as well as the cities.

The only people buying into the hype over Peter Magyar are those who are unwilling to accept reality and are buying into a fantasy out of desperation. Peter Magyar is promising Hungarians to continue Orban's foreign policy TO THE TEE, while simultaneously cleansing the domestic governance of all corruption. Yeah, good luck with that. Magyar Peter will either cave to Brussels' demands or he will be sent home without having brought home the bacon for Hungarians. Either way, he would be toast.
If they Hungarians actually believe the promises of an unknown guy, they will deserve him. They had a chance to vote. They think they can overthrow a government who was democratic elected. I hope Budapest is not gonna be Kiev 2014.
